I'm telling you, the SRU need to get Adam Hastings on a Player Development contract and into the Edinburgh setup pronto.
My uncle (who isn't even remotely mildly racist) is a Barf fanatic and my cousin plays alongside him in the Bath Academy.
He is constantly mentioned as one of the brightest talents at 10 the Academy has ever seen.
I have never seen him play this is all just third party information but surely he must be on the SRU's radar?

Well if he's at the Bath Academy and learning from George Ford, he may well be better staying put. Other than Jade Te Rure, whose Best Man committments at RDW's wedding have been getting in the way of his development as a player, Edinburgh don't possess a single specialist fly half. We have a 12 who is currently dabbling at 10, and a converted 15.

To be fair he's probably better off staying where he is, for now. I'm sure Bath's academy (which is fully pro) would be much better for his development than one of the Scottish academies (the Edinburgh one is based in Sighthill) and playing the odd game for Heriots.
In his late teens / early 20s then look at signing him!

Look at what happened to Tom Heathcoate when he came up to Edinburgh, was a waste of a year, also see Harry Leonard, I wouldnt want Adam Hastings any where near Solomans. He will develop better at Bath.
That being said we should be capping him first chance we get, there are far to many whispers of English skull-duggery around the boy.

Surely of all the people to play for England we'd never see Gavin Hastings' son??

Dunno kinda guessing he is the sort of posh that believes he is "Scot's" as a concept, but doesn't have a chip on his shoulder about it? Slightly worried he might be talked into it at the polo after a couple of bottles of prosecco by prince harry or something like that.
He moved from George Watsons to Millfield Acadamy in England when he was 16/17 which may have been a purely rugby based decision which has been vindicated but a conspiracy theorist might suggest be a calculated option to allow him to Qualify for England under the education route?

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread X-rated
Here's a wee article on him from earlier in the year
Edinburgh News wrote:Scotland Under-18 cap Adam Hastings, son of former Scotland and Lions captain, Gavin, is moving closer to a contract at Bath after earning praise from the former European champions’ youth coach.
Earlier this season Hastings, a stand-off, turned out for Bath United against London Welsh in a Premiership reserve league fixture.
Now he has received honourable mention after the Bath Under-18s finished fourth in the Premiership youth championship.
Coach George Tavner said: “Adam Hastings is someone I think has got a really good future ahead of him.”
Hastings, jnr, left George Watson’s to study and pursue a rugby interest at Somerset’s Millfield College which has produced, among others, Welsh great Gareth Edwards and current England captain, Chris Robshaw.
A few weeks ago Millfield won the inaugural English Schools Champions Trophy with Hastings among the try scorers against Leeds Grammar at the home of Saracens.
Hastings was included in the wider Scotland Under-20 squad this season.

Not worried about him turning out for England. The lad will want World Cup knock-out rugby.

I hope your right, having a couple of guys coming through in Kinghorn (If he isnt ruined by Solomans) and Hastings who are about 4/5 years younger than Russell and Weir would be nice for Scotland, and if guys like Heathcote and Leonard could get themselves playing regular Premiership rugby, maybe even Gregor Hunter at Glasgow who seems to be well regarded despite being broken for around 3 years now. We might have some competition at 10

This was last year in the Schools Champions Trophy Final. He was only 17 but got MoM and looks like a real talent.

Nah, read an interview with him in which they said he was almost qualified for England, but that he'd only want to play in the blue. Said something about his family never forgiving him if he played for England. His Twitter profile over the RWC has also been all about Scotland.

Ahem, Tommy 'Tommaso' Allan....
I jest - I do think this is different. As far as I'm aware he will only qualify on residency whereas Allan is half Italian.
Does make you wonder why Bath signed him though given they have to develop young English players?

Fes, I went to the game with Bru and even I had difficulty separating him from the 60 year old ladies: had to use a crow bar in the end.

There was a curly redhead in the choir who looked sub-pensionable age, but otherwise you could hear the quiet chattering of false teeth behind the singing (which was in fact lovely).

For those of you suggesting Adam Hastings would snub Scotland for England, think again. His family would disown him.
Millfield is one of the top sports schools in Europe, so if you get a chance to go there, you jolly well take it! I know a couple of former pupils and they're freaks of nature.
Not going to Millfield is like snubbing Oxford or Cambridge or St Andrews Universities for Strathclyde or QMU. Just doesn't quite compare (no disrespect intended).

Hey fella being a guy who grew up 9 miles from the English Border and has lived in deepest darkest Wiltshire for close to seven years and (touch wood) should be having a English born kid in 6 months, the Scottish chip on my shoulder isnt the most desirable thing anymore but it keeps on erupting. Usually in a heaving pub, standing shouting and screaming during mad-man Matawalu's awesome break against England then turning seeing a lot of confused faces at my table. Also meaning posting gloating post,s when drunk on facebook when England lose at something, that i wake up the next day and think that's hardly adult and not really in the spirit of rugby is it Dave?
I see 15 or 11 white shirts and I'm overcome with revulsion and Hatred when in fact i spend all day with English folk and consider them good mates's
Hopefully any kid I have can support Scotland in a healthy manner with-out the little angry Scotsman ugly mentality that i seem to be stuck with.

To be fair to him he was a solid enough player, quite physical in defence, but he was a terrible goal kicker which perhaps clouds our memories of him.
I certainly wouldn’t have thought he was Super Rugby calibre though.
Next you’ll be saying Jade Te Rure has signed for Toulon!

That is staggering. Francis was a completely average player. Perhaps with Carter stepping aside we'll see him in an ABs jersey before long!
I'm so keen to see Burleigh at 12 ahead of Strauss, that I'm almost willing for Te Rure to have another crack at 10. At least he would open things up and attack with ball in hand. I'm getting fed up of Edinburgh failing to put teams to the sword and having a backline who are virtual strangers to the rugby ball.

As long as Te Rure wasn't kicking from hand, to touch or at goal and was given very little responsibility in running the game, I'd probably rather see him at 10 and Burleigh at 12 too to see what happens.

It's not as silly as it sounds. Sam Hidalgo-Clyne at 9 and Burleigh at 12 could shoulder more game management responsibilities, and you can always use the big boot of Cuthbert or Tonks at 15 for touchfinders.

I actually think Te Rure could make quite a good scrum-half. He seems to have good footwork and is sharp but lacks the kicking skills of a NH flyhalf.
I did a bit or googling on Francis and I got the impression he'd signed with Counties Manatu and was playing for the Blues due to injury problems?

I watched a game on Sky recently in which Francis was playing and he did miss a few kicks at goal, some sitters so that aspect of his game would appear not to have improved.

Just picking up on the chat on the latest Soap Dodger match thread - here's a crystal ball exercise.
What do we think the Scotland XV will look like in 2020, based on the players/prospects we are currently aware of. This is my stab:
1.Sutherland 2.Brown 3.Fagerson 4.J Gray(c) 5.R Gray 6.Denton 7.Watson 8.Bradbury 9.Hidalgo-Clyne 10.Russell 11.Hoyland 12.Dunbar 13.Bennett 14.Nairn 15.Hogg
16.Reid 17.McInally 18.Nel (veteran!) 19.Gilchrist 20.Ashe 21.Steele 22.Kinghorn 23.Dean

The 3rd scrum half spot is certainly up for grabs once Laidlaw retires - there's no clear standout. I'm sure one will emerge though - we were saying the same when Blair and Cusiter became older and suddenly SHC and Pyrgos came along.
Fowles, Kennedy, McAndrew, Price, Horne and Steele are the current youngsters.
My bet is on Fowles - he is in the Hidalgo-Clyne mould and I have been impressed with him this season.

I need to see a bit more of Fowles, but he certainly gets good reviews from you Edinburgh peeps, and I know you're not the type to talk extravagantly about an Edinburgh player's attributes while ignoring any game-crushing inadequacies.
I've been really impressed with George Horne for the U20s - some really slick service and, dare I say it, the Horne family build is a bit more suited to 9 than 12.
In fact, the current vintage of U20 players has some real quality in it - Magnus Bradbury (and expect me to be just as loyal to the Oban boys as GC is to Ayr!), Scott Cummings, Lewis Carmichael, and of course the Boy Zander. Jamie Richie needs game time, but you've got to be optimistic about his prospects when he's understudying guys like Du Preez, Manu and Hardie.
Archie Russell looks a pretty talented 13, although Paddy Kelly has really stepped up as well. I'm not so optimistic about the outside backs, as they seem to alternate moments of magic skill with mind-numbing carelessness. Still, you've got to be excited about the prospect of a Horne-Russell-Horne-Russell backline in a few years!

Saw Robbie Nairn scoring some tries for Quins in the English Premiership 7s on tv at the start of the season, he's certainly a solid looking guy already.

I've come across a brilliant page on Facebook - 'Mediocre rugby union players of the 90s and 2000s'
Scotland gets a mention!
Scotland gets a mention!
For all the sad tales of wasted talent, there are also uplifting stories of players overcoming the odds in their pursuit of mediocrity. Case in point, Southern Districts journeyman Dan Parks, who elevated himself from BBQ duties at Foreshaw Park to the bright lights of Murrayfield, thanks to his maternal grandmother once meeting a man from Scotland..
Possessing a rare blend of no pace and even less footwork, Parks caught the eye of Scottish selectors with his knack for potting goals in Sydney's Shute Shield.
In an illustrious international career, he calmly steered the Scots to 11 victories in his 62 tests, becoming a folk hero for his innate ability to find touch following penalties and free kicks.
The pinnacle of this career came during a 15-6 rout of Georgia during the 2011 World Cup. He finished with 4 penalties and a scintillating drop goal, earning him man of the match and legendary status in his adopted land.
So Dan, thanks for bravely trail blazing a new path for mediocre players in the Northern Hemisphere. Every grade player in Australia can now sit back to the Six Nations and think, "I could play in that"

Great news. That's a coup, as I suspect a few wealthy suitors would have been snooping. I suspect the new Scottish Power deal has helped with this!

Nah, apparently the kebab shops in Toulon were far too rowdy.

Well with the World Cup now official over we can have a look at how Edinburgh and Glasgow have got on in that period.
Edinburgh – won 4, lost 2, 17 points
Glasgow – won 3, lost 3, 17 points
So despite losing one more game than Edinburgh, Glasgow are on the same number of points having picked up 2 four try BPs and 3 losing BPs.
A feature of Edinburgh under the Solomons’ reign is not picking up BPs, and that looks to be continuing this season. The most obvious example being 3 tries up against Treviso then, instead of pulling away to get the 4th try with plenty time to spare, they almost end up losing the game. Indeed Edinburgh have only scored 1 try in the last two games.
So 4 out of 6 isn’t too bad for Edinburgh but the loss to Zebre was incredible frustrating.
3 out of 6 for Glasgow isn’t great but the BPs have kept them in the race. Now that they have their full squad back I can see then climbing the table leading into the 6N, where I think they will still do well given that the likes of Nakarawa, Peterson and Big T will be available.

November would seem to be a make or break month for the reigning Pro 12 champs. Away to Cardiff on Saturday and at home to Treviso on the 27th; 10 points there would put us right back in the play off places. In between we have Racing away and Saints at home; a home win is essential and anything from Paree will be a bonus.
The Luvvies on the other hand have two tough home games coming up; Munster and then Grenoble who thumped Toulon at the weekend. Then away to Agen and home to the Dragons. End of season dance by mid December? You usually wait until after The Annual Slaughter Of The Effeminates.

On paper Grenoble and Agen look like tough opposition, but we just don't know what to expect given that it is only the Challenge Cup.
UBB were on a high last season yet we beat them.
Munster on Saturday is a huge game for the season going into the European break. We'll have all our Scotland players back so we have every chance.

Actually, turns out this year that there will be no playoff for the Champions Cup - the winner of the Challenge Cup will get a place. If they are already qualified the place goes to the highest ranked team in that league who aren't qualified.
So the Frenchies might actually take this more seriously.
It also gives Edinburgh a reason to take it seriously - although finishing in the Top 6 is probably still a more realistic thing to aim for.

A mate was asking me about the nicknames for the Glasgow team. Could anyone send me a link to an updated 'teamsheet' please ?
