Also, is it only in Glasgow where a six year old singing, "I've got two bottles of whiskey for the journey" is considered laudable?
Ahem Mr J - "whiskey" - wtf is that ?
Normally referred to as Jack Daniels...

Got it in one there Radge. A nation whose taste rates Johnnie Walker Red Label is as good as it gets "Scotch" (also )

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread X-rated
Normally the only thing I take in my whisky is water.
I quite like my single malts. Auchentoshan, Laphroaig and Talisker being a few of my faves.
However I sometimes dabble in a wee Drambuie if it becomes apparent that Mrs Radge will become agitated if I return in an inebriated state. For obvious reasons staying on the single malts can have that effect.
So on a night out a few months ago I was introduced to a "Rusty Nail". A Drambuie with a Laphroaig tipped into it over a couple of ice cubes.
To my surprise it was a taste sensation!

Well if we manage to get 5 points tomorrow v Saints I might just treat that cheeky wee scamp and sometime choirist Mr IanBru to couple of large Glengoynes (my local distillery - actually it may be Auchentoshen in strict geographic terms !)

Jimbo you are banned from using the word luvvie or mincer after blaspheming Scottish whisky by adding an "E" to the word!

Hey, hey now.
It was an Mericaahn song. Therefore in the interest of verisimilitude one has to quote correctly. Rather like when the sports sections of our daily newspapers refer to the MFL as a rugby club we then continue with the fiction when quoting them.

Is this big word day?
I always try to tone my language commensurate to the level of intelligence of the people I'm speaking to.
I try to keep to one or two syllables on Glasgow threads.

I wouldn't worry, I enjoyed a ten minute discourse from Jim in a nice Jesmond coffee shop about how Thatcher deliberately destroyed Scottish heavy industry in order to disperse the centres of population and dilute the Labour vote, while also paving the way for a take over from the Great Dark Lord Cthulhu the most Devious. Or something.funnyExiledScot wrote:jimbopip wrote:RuggerRadge2611 wrote:jimbopip wrote:funnyExiledScot wrote:Re: whisky, I'm not a massive fan. A coffee shop?? Was there not a working man's club nearby!?
I never tire of rants about Thatcher, although I do wonder at what point folk will move on. Perhaps a new era of Corbynism will assauge those who still feel sufficiently wronged to the extent it requires continued discourse in the coffee shops of Jesmond in 2015.

I see that Johnny "is it all right if I just dial in this performance?" Beattie is starting for Castres against the Dragons tomorrow night. Will be interested to see if he is seemingly still not giving a merde.

What a shame for Johnny Beattie. He was potentially our greatest ever No 8 - destructive and a fantastic ball carrier, scored tries too. Never really recovered from his shoulder injury in 2010 (?). The fallout form the spat with Sean Lineen soured things too. He could have been captain of the Warriors as well. Aacch the Killer Bs were just tremendous to watch.

Sorry, but can not agree
One good season does not make a great player be
He had that one season with the Killer B's where he was fantastic, but apart from that the story has been of disappointment and his lack of effort
He really has benefitted from the - the less the play, the better they get
He was a lazy, trouble maker and it seemed that his fall from grace, was entirely at his own door

Thats a bit unfair on Beattie tbh. He had 2/3 good seasons with us and then got a serious shoulder injury. Wasted talent I say.

Ruaridh Jackson must be pinching himself at the moment, being handed the keys to back lines like this at Wasps
15. Charles Piutau; 14. Christian Wade, 13. Elliot Daly, 12. Ben Jacobs, 11. Frank Halai; 10. Ruaridh Jackson, 9. Joe Simpson;
Think it's safe to say if there's any danger of him winning a new contract down there he won't be looking for a move to Edinburgh!

Are you really suggesting that Jacobs/Daly has more creativity than Morrison/Lamont? Sheesh.TheMildlyFranticLlama wrote:Ruaridh Jackson must be pinching himself at the moment, being handed the keys to back lines like this at Wasps

Think it's safe to say if there's any danger of him winning a new contract down there he won't be looking for a move to Edinburgh!
I really want Jackson to step up and run this backline properly. Massive test tonight against the champions. I just want him to vindicate his selection.
Incidentally, did everyone see Duncan Taylor's offload for Sarries' second score? Practically Fijian, it was...

Lovely pass by Jackson to set up Wasps' first try against Toulon, followed by a touchline conversion.

Probably worth remembering we have been here before with Jackson - lets see how he's doing come 6N time.
Russell still blows hot and cold - mixing the sublime with the silly mistakes - so we could do with other options.

Apart from the one responsible of the Glasgow recruitment and players contracts, were there people thinking that? Can't remember anyone on here at least.
It's funny because Weir weirdly (see what i did there) doesn't suit Glasgow style of rugby either.

How right you are, when we start the game with one mercurial yet unpredictable creative, running playmaker what we really need if things aren't working out is to replace him with a mercurial, unpredictable creative, running playmaker.
Dancer and Jackson are exactly the same sort of player and both benefit greatly from playing every week. I have a sneaky feeling that Toonie knew what he was doing when he decided that aclub needs two different styles of 10. Which does make me wonder whether Cotter released Jackson from the WC squad because of concerns over his fitness or rather that he wanted a plan B rather than more of plan A. This could mean that we go into the 6N's with either Dancer and Meatball (one of whom will not have had much game time) or Dancer and Rhuaridh and put all our chips on Plan A.

This whole talk of Plan A and Plan B puts us in real danger of thinking any of the three of actually know what they are going to do, Russell because he's unpredictable and mercurial and Weir because, well, he's bad and Jackson I'm not quite sure of after yesterday. Toulon could make a claim on being the best club side in European Rugby History and you don't orchestrate such an emphatic win without being at least a semi-competent rugby player. My feeling on Jackson and, to an extent, also Weir is that they both profited an awful lot from not being Dan Parks, we didn't score many tries and the easy option was to point to the Australian with silly sideburns and a tackling allergy than the fact that he was playing alongside such creative minds as Rory Lawson, Graeme Morrison, Simon Danielli and yes even the immortal Mr Lamont. We easily forget that most of our best victories from the period came from Dan Parks' boot. In my mind Jackson was always branded a creative fly-half because he couldn't kick and Weir a kicking fly-half because he couldn't pass, I was a Weir fan initially but he has not played enough rugby at even Pro12 rugby to be considered a valid option, simply put unless plan B is losing to everyone except maybe Italy if we are lucky Weir does not offer a Plan B. Jackson now simply has to be the second choice after Russell, he starts week in week out at Wasps and they've been rather good recently, Weir can't get a game for Glasgow. Furthermore if we are going to go along with the myth that Weir does offer a "kicking gameplan" how does that go along with a centre partnership of Horne and Bennett, whilst they are good players, they're hardly perfect for a conservative gameplan. If we start with that combination, as it looks like we will then we will have to run the opposition off the park. Perhaps there's room for manoeuvre should Dunbar come back to fitness or Scott rediscover what rugby involves exactly as they offer more bulk in midfield however it is clear that this Scotland team can play only one way, and if Weir can play any way at all (which is on recent evidence questionable) it is not the way Scotland can.

At what point did I say I'd have him on the bench?
You are right that it wouldn't be a good balance to have both in the squad. Russell is at a real key stage in his career now - is he going to push on and become a truly international class 10, or is he going to carry being inconsistent, relying on the excuse of being young and inexperienced?
He's got 15 caps now, has played in a world cup and has a good number of pro games under his belt - it is time for him to step up to the plate.
If he doesn't then Jackson may become the better option.

I think if Jackson and Taylor keep playing like they are - then they have to be in the match day squad come 6 nations
Taylor is looking very assured and even one of the stronger players is a top class side - Now if he could get a hair cut - then he could be a started
Jackson starting to some some real form - and if he settles down and keeps that form - then we have a real option
The next couple of months going to be key

My own view is that this whole Plan A and Plan B stuff is utter tripe (that's a Glaswegian delicacy by the way).
Weir is a bad rugby player. He doesn't "control" the game any better than the other two. His kicking game has, for at least 2 years, been dreadful. That he squanders attacking opportunities by hoofing the ball badly doesn't make him any better at controlling a game than the other two. Russell and Jackson are both in a different league. They are capable of performances that Weir just doesn't have in him. The real contrast is between two skillful players and a very limited player. With respect to taking risks I rank them both the same. I don't think Russell or Jackson are any less likely to make an error than Weir, but they are far more likely to create a try.
I also don't subscribe to the "we've seen it all before with Jackson" dogma. Why are Scotland fans so suspicious of Jackson, and not with Russell and Weir?? Russell was p1ss poor in the 6 Nations, and Weir was an utter calamity under Scott Johnson. His performance against France was the worst I've seen from a Scotland 10 since Parks' first stint at 10 under Matt Williams. At least with Jackson (and Russell) we know that they are capable of playing the sort of rugby we want to be playing. What on earth is Weir for?
Russell and Jackson for me come the 6 Nations. With the backline we now have, we need footballers at 10. We can't afford to neuter the backline by picking Meatball to play this mythical Plan B.
