Merry Christmas everyone, too much champagne and too many vodka martinis  today, with more to come, but looking forward to Sunday. Whoever wins,  that's how good a mood I'm  in.

Roddy Grant has announced his retirement having failed to recover from a knee injury

http://www.edinburghrugby.org/news/15/12/26/opportunity-say-thank-you-roddy-retires

Real shame for him to go out like this - he deserved a send off on the pitch!

A great shame for Roddy G. He has been a great servant to Edinburgh and plenty worse players than him have been capped. I guess he will look back on a very good career though and will always be a fans favourite.

Indeed. It must grate a bit that the likes of Blake and Fusaro (plus many, many others) have been capped and he hasn't.

There were times when he genuinely was Scotland's top performing 7 yet still didn't get picked, suggesting there was something else behind it.

Let's also not forget his season as the world's shortest number 8 - he did a good job of it too!

A good game and both Cowan and Maitland played well, as did the Irish 12, a young man called Johnny Williams, who I think is only 18 and has a colourful ancestry that makes him qualified for England, Scotland and Wales. I would hope that someone, whose job it is to do these things, is keeping an eye on him!

I think that might be pushing the conspiracy theories a bit!

Generally during his time, Barclay and Rennie were the better options. Time will tell if Blake is as well!

Fusaro was a soft cap and only really got it on the form of the whole Glasgow team that year. He was lucky and won't get another one. Roddy G may well have been found wanting as well at that level, but I guess we will never know that now.

I don't think there are any conspiracy theories - unlike Barclay he doesn't come across as the kind of character who would rub people up the wrong way so I suspect the international coaches just didn't rate him.

Given the plethora of rank average players that have been picked over the years (I think Ryan Wilson has even played 7 for Scotland) that's what will be tough for him to accept!

He's put a message on Twitter where he addresses the Scotland cap situation and is very magnanimous about it.

That says an awful lot about him, particularly when you compare it to some of Barclay's reactions!

I think we are all agreed that he is one of the good guys!

Read the Roddy Grant message.. That was incredibly emotional..

What a great player and great servant for the club, the kind of player that will NEVER let the team down. I wont hide that i would have loved to see both him and Rob Harley in the Scottish back row. Unfortunately, the power that be preferred to select an incredibly average player like Fusaro or even playing an average Wilson out of position instead of him.

He will be sorely missed, hope the boys win for him this afternoon.

H has struggled to get any game time at Glasgow, the move does not seem to have worked out for him and with the emergence of Cummings, seems unlikely to be getting much in the future. This may end up being a one way ticket and the beginning of the squad being thinned down a bit.

Toonie definitely has a ruthless streak and does not have any issues moving players on if they are not going to feature for him. Downey and Ryder will testify to that!

is it a ruthless streak or just common sense? if a player is getting zero game time and one assumes is on good wage why would you keep him if you get the option to move him on? Low also seems to one of those guys who is neither a six or a four and was a strange signing in the first place. Jedi is a better 6 and can cover 4 just as well so i never understood why he was signed.

On the other hand a genuine ball carrying row in the form of Tom, show me the sunbed, Ryder was allowed to move on. Yes, he had a bad run with injuries, but so did the mighty Coo ( who has been allowed to carry on as a much diminished scrummaging force after his lengthy mystery illness). Ryder is now fully fit and has played 9 games for Yorkshire Carnegie, who lie third in the rugby championship. Was binning Ryder and keeping the Coo being ruthless or just making the wrong decision?

I think Low was signed primarily as world cup cover, and indeed he played quite regularly that period.

He's well and truly last in the pecking order now though

Cusack was contracted until the end of the 2015/2016 season, i suspect it wasn't that easy to get rid of him early but trust me on this, he will be gone at the end of the season. What a waste of space he has been.

I too think Ryder got unfairly shafted, i would have a fit and firing Ryder ahead of Swinson any day.

So you'd choose a fit and firing Ryder over a fit and firing Swinson? Interesting choice.

TBH, I think they're similar types of players, however, Swinson is the better player in my book. Just.

Before arriving from the Saracens reserves Ryder had one good season, two average seasons, and a crocked season (not necessarily in that order). He was a good player for Glasgow but didn't exactly set the heather alight on the test scene... Ryder got his 2 international caps due to injury cover as a sub on a summer tour. If I remember correctly, Al Kellock, Ritchie Gray and Ryder were the only locks in that squad.

Whereas Swinson, who was also withering in mediocrity at Newcastle before arriving, made a surprisingly positive impact that saw him become a first team regular plus get a number of international caps. I'd also add that Timmy hasn't seen the kind of form that impressed the top brass 2 seasons ago and if Gilchrist wasn't made of glass, I doubt Swinson would've had as many caps.

In conclusion, Tim not Tom.

I can't see Low getting much gametime with Saracens if he was to move there permanently.

I feel for him a bit though. He was getting frequent gametime at Irish and playing well enough to get capped, moved to Glasgow to try and figure more in the international team yet gets binned off with some players around him of equal quality but not SQ (Peterson) playing in the 1872 cup.

Peterson had a decent WC for the yanks and has taken his chances well when he has had them for Glasgow. Low has not made the same impression, albeit that he has been out with a concussion for some time. The nature of professional sport I'm afraid, you don't always get to many chances!

Glasgow resign Brown and McArthur, both good solid options in the hooking department. I wonder if they will hang onto Bryce, Scott and Malcolm as well. That seems to be to many even for Toonie to rotate.

Bryce looks a good solid player but has only made 12 appearances for Glasgow since 2013.

A lot of this was because of better options, but there have been numeous times (including just now) that Glasgow have been short of hookers and he has been injured.

He's not had the best of luck but I'd say he's worth at least another year - see what he can do if he manages to keep his fitness.

Hooker does seem to be an area where the 2 Scottish teams get a fair bit of injury problems & players with 6N. Atm, McInally & Macarthur are injured but Ford had back problems recently.

If Bryce can't oust MacArthur then he isn't of a level to trouble the Scotland jersey.

Brown I rate highly. Really handy in the loose, particularly at the breakdown. At the World Cup he pushed Ford all the way, and I expect him to continue to do so.

Ford, Brown and McInally for me, in that order.

From a Scotland PoV yeah, but we aren't exactly overflowing with hookers ( Erm ) and we shouldn't discard him now that he's comfortable in the professional environment!

Absolutely agree. Glasgow are overflowing with players like that, honest club pros that will never make it at international level. One more won't hurt.

New Edinburgh contract for Chris Dean, until 2018 so a decent length too. Old Solly obviously rates him

I'm pleased about Chris Dean. He's made a really solid start to his Pro12 career and looks the part defensively. I've still to see him do anything in attack that's made me sit up and take notice, but I can imagine plenty top quality backs struggling to impress under the Solomons game plan.

Worth cracking open this thread again as barren soil for the nourishing water of my irritation for the season which Glasgow seems to be having.

I mercifully didn't see the Racing 92 game but I have never been more convinced that I didn't actually need to. I can just reply the Edinburgh games in my head.

It has been well and often spoken of that Glasgow didn't replace the departing players from last season with those of comparable quality and that is correct, but I think is only half the problem.

Last season, it was clear what our first choice 23 was and when Toonie rotated, players knew what their role was (as the gameplan was coherent) and could rely on the old stagers who had formed the backbone of the side in the past two seasons to keep the structure and do their jobs. Now, I couldn't really tell you what our first choice 23 is and that is an enormous problem for any team. Not because players need to understand a simplistic pecking order, but because the types of players in each position were of an ilk and felt supported.

I cannot see us finishing in the playoffs this year and I do not think our pack will give us the platform to win in Northampton. It's a shame. Similarly, it is undeniable that our players were worked heavily in the world cup but as was pointed out on the Racing thread, for how many months are we going to keep trotting this out as through it's a problem which affects Glasgow and no other team?

PS - Props to Edinburgh for going well. Props to their props particularly.

If Edinburgh place top 4 with a granite pack, great defence and a sketchy backline then I shall start referring to them as 'Arsenal'.

I agree the WC excuse needs to be put to bed now. Other than at prop, I am not sure I agree with the lack of quality replacement arguments though. Injuries have not helped but a lot of our quality players, Hogg and Russell in particular just are not playing well enough and quite why that is, I do not know.

We may well be out of Europe next weekend and maybe that won't be a bad thing, not that anyone else in the Pro 12 is likely to be concerning themselves with euro knockouts either! At least they can concentrate on that and I do still believe that the form will come at some stage and they could still qualify for the playoffs. The Pro 12 is an open book this year with no one really dominating, a good run of games in the spring and anything is possible.

Europe this year is definitely going to go down as a missed opportunity and we may not get another good chance like this again for some time, if ever.

One other interesting bit of speculation on the Glasgow forum ids that Sean Linean and Roddy Grant may be going to coach London Scottish next year.

They would certainly be interesting appointments and a statement of some intent. It may well strengthen the bonds and get more young players going down there as well.

It is hard to imagine that George Horne and co are not going to come back more experienced and better players.

Roddy Grant did just start following London Scottish on Instagram the other day. Speculative, but...

In his interview with Edinburgh when he announced he was leaving he said he wanted to stay in rugby.

There's not really any positions available for him in Scotland.

Linean may feel that he still has unfinished business as a club coach as well. He has done a decent enough job with the U20s with a good crop of players coming through, but it is always going to be a hard and thankless task and one which he will need to move on from at some stage.
