Standardisation/Consistency & The In Goal Area
I posted something similar to this a few years ago as it remains one of my bête noires' - I'm still intrigued by the fact that we have such inconsistent in-goal areas and for me this is an absolute fundamental flaw in a professional game that can greatly impact on how teams play, especially offensively. Now I know its the same for both sides but surely we have to move towards something that is more standardised here and I would even go for an exact measure. For example we have a 22 metre line and a 10 metre line, we don't have say anything between 22 and 25 metres or 10 and 15 metres, that would be ridiculous. My concern was prompted yet again by the limited in goal areas in the SA v Argentina game the Olympic Stadium that IMO greatly restricted try scoring opportunities. Time for some consistency for me as the deviations are too much and can greatly affect a game.

Re: Standardisation/Consistency & The In Goal Area
Was it not at the Olympic Stadium?
In goal areas have been shrinking in England mainly because clubs have built stands on what were often "unstanded" grounds and not had permission/ability to extend backwards.
At Welford Road, the ends of the ground back onto main thoroughfares (Aylestone Rd and the titular Welford Rd.)
As part of the recent development plans it was intended to rotate the pitch 90 degrees and move wnat is now the oldest stand (and terrace) back into the car park - enabling a wider pits and bigger ingoal areas. However for a variety of reasons that will not happen, so we will forever be stuck with rather tiny in-goal areas.

Australian and New Zealand steam-punk methods would require an airport runway on each end. Sorry but that's just not viable.
Of course there are a few NH sides that don't even require the extra inches of white that make up a tryline.
So everywhere has different requirements

Re: Standardisation/Consistency & The In Goal Area
Any games played in soccer stadiums are in most cases going to have a very small in goal area. Murrayfield has (I think) always had a huge in goal area. But even having loads of space doesn't mean that there's going to be huge in goal areas. When Ireland were playing in Croke Park (a stadium with 150 metres plus of pitch space for GAA matches) when Lansdowne was being rebuilt the in goal area wasn't huge.

In a perfect world this could be addressed, but can you imagine the cost of rehoming teams, redesigning stadiums etc. At the grassroots club level it would be even more stark. Many clubs just couldn't afford to make any necessary changes. There are plenty who are struggling to get by as it is. What a nightmare!
