Johnson retires
Leaves all FC and international cricket ....giving a feeling he is gone too early......
he is only 34
Played only 8 years and managed 71 tests inspite of not having played every test
311 wkts at 28 apiece...and a SR of 50 balls per wicket is excellent....
2000 runs that went largely unnoticed at a Mike Brearleysque average of 22 made him almost an allrounder
Well played
although he might feel withdrawal symptoms quite soon i suspect

Re: Johnson retires
An excellent career ends! Not keen on the timing though, what is with all these mid-match retirements?

Re: Johnson retires
Well I flagged this on the match thread on Sunday - though I swear I didn't have any inside information
To be honest I didn't think he would go on much longer after the Ashes tour : while I'm sure he could have revved himself up again for the West Indies series , it would have been a real effort - and to what point ? He's done it all : World Cups , Ashes heroics , wins in SA , 300 wickets ...not really any more reachable goals . He was never going to make another England tour , probably wouldn't want to go to India again...next World Cup out of range ...perhaps he'd have liked to have a crack at regaining the Ashes at home again ; but these two matches probably proved that was no certainty. A man with a young family - I think he's made the right call.
A fine career : more ups and downs than most ; but never boring. He finishes with an excellent record and behind only the true greats of Australian bowling in wicket taking...well done Mitch
