surrey vs gloucestershire & hampshire twenty/20
First topic message reminder :
Chris Adams has named a fourteen man squad for the opening two fixtures of the Friends Life t20 competition. The Surrey Lions face Gloucestershire at The Kia Oval on Thursday and Hampshire at The Rose Bowl on Friday.
Notably the squad features the inclusion of Surrey’s new acquisition, Dirk Nannes
The recently capped Jade Dernbach doesn’t appear in the fourteen after his call up to the England squad for the second Test at Lord’s, but Pakistani Yasir Arafat returns after a slight hamstring injury.
If Arafat and Nannes take the field together, Surrey will boast two of the top five wicket takers in T20 history on the same side.
Spinning all-rounders Chris Schofield (allowed to mention him in this thread)and Matthew Spriegel return to the squad, as does Gary Wilson, fresh from International duty with Ireland.
The full Surrey Lions squad to face Gloucestershire at the Kia Oval on Thursday 2nd June and Hampshire at The Rose Bowl on Friday June 3rd is:
Rory Hamilton-Brown (Captain)
Steven Davies (Wicket Keeper)
Jason Roy
Tom Maynard
Zander de Bruyn
Matthew Spriegel
Gareth Batty
Chris Schofield
Gary Wilson
Tim Linley
Yasir Arafat
Dirk Nannes
Matthew Dunn
Tom Jewell
jade dernbach has been added to the squad for the hampshire game after being released by england

15th over just bowled. Only the 3rd and 6th overs have gone for 10 runs or more.
What a contrast to last night!
90 - 5 now. Churchy reckons 150 needed 'to be competitive'. Not looking good ....

124 - 5 after 18 overs.
50 for Zander but more importantly 3 sixes in Briggs' over - 2 to Schoey!

Evening all!
Not looking good at all. Agree completely with everyones thoughts on us being a batsmen light, Lancefield probably next in line.
As we knew was likely Tahir made life damn near impossible for a short and inexperienced batting line-up. Here's hoping for a miracle with the ball!

If Nannes can rip apart their top order we have a slim chance, but that's it.

Looks like Adams is resting Ramps for the T20 though jimbob. Guess (and hope) it could just be for these two games though.

May well be only using him in championship then, again I hope its only till Ramps regains full fitness.
140-7 probably not enough, cant realistically think that we wouldnt have had more without Ramps in that line-up! Good cameo from Schofield and De Bruyns 50 have given us hope however slim though.

It's a shame but was always going to happen if 4 of your 'big 5' fail. Hampshire are very good at this format though don't forget.

hear hear on experience, especially with such a young top 4. Would be interesting to see where Ramps came in. Could change from game to game depending on the situatuion I guess!
3 runs and a wicket from his first over, good start from Linley! Could be too little too late unless we get Lumb soon though.

Carrot - to be fair, yesterday Batty probably bowled the best I've ever seen from him!

And tonight Schofield's first 2 overs go for just 6 runs - bizarrely, he's more economical in t20 than CC !!!

Re: surrey vs gloucestershire & hampshire twenty/20
A bit of a massacre this. Ah well, it's only the second game and the first really poor one day match we've had for a while. Get another batsman at no.6 for the next game and move on. Hampshire have had a couple of days off between games and both were at home for them so they did have a bit of an advantage.

Back to Planet Reality ....
Decent knocks from Zander and Schoey. Tightish bowling from Batty and Schoey. Other than that, not a lot.

I have a feeling that needs time to play himself in before launching the fireworks. I think he will play, but we may find that he's not quite so adept at scoring quickly from the beginning.
Obviously it's only one match he's batted - but his performance tonight rather supports the suggestion above. I think Spriegel is better suited to CB40 than T20....

Corporal - even though it is early days as you acknowledge, I suspect you make a very good point about Spriegel's batting. He seems more suited to the role of Plumber's Mate than the Plumber - as seen in his vital support act to Le Roi in the CB 40 win against Hants. I'm not sure there is time for that role in t20.
An apparent plus point for him is that Adams appears to like having several spin options available to us in t20. He did ok last night after Schofield's first over had been clobbered.

Re: surrey vs gloucestershire & hampshire twenty/20
Well chaps a disappointing if not slightly expected result. In fairness Hampshire are one of the best T20 sides out there this year! Onwards and upwards lets hope. Will be interesting to see if Ramps returns as we need that 6th specialist batsmen, or if he's still not seen as fit enough for CC and T20 whether someone like Lancefield gets brought in.
Spinners did surprisingly well today to be fair. Schofield and Batty had very good economy rates. Thought Nannes and Dernbach were a bit disappointing in the first few. Though without seeing it you cant really judge how they bowled, and ofcourse they didnt have much to bowl to.

Re: surrey vs gloucestershire & hampshire twenty/20
Agree about Spriegel, perhaps Lancefield would have been a better option. Although it would be nice to have the experience of Ramps at 6 I would personally prefer youth to be given a go. I also have a feeling that he is avoiding one day cricket to save stress on his knee, he can avoid quick singles and too much twisting and turning during a 4 day match whereas you can't afford to in the short forms.
Not overly distressed by this result, we can't and won't win every game. I would set my sights high however and hope for 12 wins from the 16, perhaps unrealistic but this is a competition I think we have a real chance in.

Re: surrey vs gloucestershire & hampshire twenty/20
I was able to go along to the Rose Bowl (which is looking a better and better ground everytime I visit), and I too was obviously disappointed by the performance.
The batting was clearly poor, very stodgy at times. The highlight for me being Zander's straight six that almost decapitated the token "cheerleaders" (who somehow ended up signing more signatures than the players!).
The biggest downside for me was the little things. The running was often poor - twos were left as ones and there were unsuccessful attempts at turning singles into twos (Le Roi a clear case in point). The fielding was below standard as well, not only the easy spill at slip off Dernbach (who bowled better than his figures suggested), but also several poor dives and throws. Lastly, the wides bowled by Nannes in particular were unacceptable.
Anyway, as you all have pointed out, there were good performances from Batty, Schofield (batting and bowling) and Zander.
For Hampshire, credit has to go to Tahir, Woods, Vince and Lumb. The latter two really showed a decent crowd that 140 was far too short.
There's a long way to go and I still believe we have the most destructive batting line-up in the Country when it's their day. Limited overs could be our forte this season.

Tibor - thanks for your report from the Rose Bowl as it were.
Disappointed to hear about the running of Le Boy Roi Hopefully one of the seniors will have a word. I'm sure he would listen and take on board. I had the honour of briefly chatting to him after a recent members' forum. He was very pleasant and came across as modest and quite shy - not at all the type who would disregard feedback meant for his and the team's good.
Particularly disappointed also to hear about the lax fielding. That's in contrast to the Gloucs match when we were really on the money with plenty of low hard throws well backed up.
Interesting you highlight Tahir's performance for Hants. It was a pipedream of mine that we might have tried to sign him in the winter.
Agree with you about our potential destructive batting line up. Just need to concentrate on consistently getting to 180 in t20 - the 250s can take care of themselves!
