surrey vs gloucestershire & hampshire twenty/20
First topic message reminder :
Chris Adams has named a fourteen man squad for the opening two fixtures of the Friends Life t20 competition. The Surrey Lions face Gloucestershire at The Kia Oval on Thursday and Hampshire at The Rose Bowl on Friday.
Notably the squad features the inclusion of Surrey’s new acquisition, Dirk Nannes
The recently capped Jade Dernbach doesn’t appear in the fourteen after his call up to the England squad for the second Test at Lord’s, but Pakistani Yasir Arafat returns after a slight hamstring injury.
If Arafat and Nannes take the field together, Surrey will boast two of the top five wicket takers in T20 history on the same side.
Spinning all-rounders Chris Schofield (allowed to mention him in this thread)and Matthew Spriegel return to the squad, as does Gary Wilson, fresh from International duty with Ireland.
The full Surrey Lions squad to face Gloucestershire at the Kia Oval on Thursday 2nd June and Hampshire at The Rose Bowl on Friday June 3rd is:
Rory Hamilton-Brown (Captain)
Steven Davies (Wicket Keeper)
Jason Roy
Tom Maynard
Zander de Bruyn
Matthew Spriegel
Gareth Batty
Chris Schofield
Gary Wilson
Tim Linley
Yasir Arafat
Dirk Nannes
Matthew Dunn
Tom Jewell

Arsenal were called boring for endlessly scoring 1 every match.
I therefore reserve the right to call Surrey boring for endlessly scoring 10 off every over!
Can't you chuck in the odd 2 or 3 every now and again?
Please.

Just got in....great performance by the lads - good to see several of the bowlers, including the Viscount do well. Also Davies pressing on to make a big score.....
Chris - Gloucs playing with one hand behind the back - without J Batty they never stood a chance..... with his electric scoring rate from the off he could have made a big difference.....

An excellent performance but room for improvement with the ball (looking at you Arafat and Schofield) Maybe worth playing Lancefield to give him a chance. de Bruyn can fill in the overs. That said I fancy our batting to chase down most scores.

The trouble is I think Batty (J) both keeps and bats with one hand behind his back.
Glad to see youth given a chance instead.
Though our best keeper/batsman of recent years (Steve Snell) is inexplicably languishing in the BBC Radio Bristol commentary box.

Re: surrey vs gloucestershire & hampshire twenty/20
Tremendous performance and result tonight.
Excellent / very good contributions from Nannes, Batty (reminiscent for older readers of Flat Jack Simmons in bowling style), Viscount, Davies and Hyphen.
Generally good fielding too - plenty of low hard throws being well backed up.
Only concern was Arafat who seemed to bowl at three - quarter pace.
Despite that concern, we are looking good in this tournament and not many teams will relish playing us ....

Re: surrey vs gloucestershire & hampshire twenty/20
Great win yesterday but a tougher test today!!
Hampshire are a good side especially at the Rose Bowl. Our bowling will decide the match IMO. If we bowl badly to the likes of Lumb,Adams,Macenzie etc on a good pitch we'll have a huge chase on our hands.
Spinners will be vital aswell (Briggs,Tahir,Kartik all impressive in Hampshire-Somerset).

Re: surrey vs gloucestershire & hampshire twenty/20
Hola King Carlos,
Yes, tonight will be a much harder battle for our troops to fight - sure the Corporal would agree
Excellent though our performance was yesterday, it needs to be recognised that Gloucs were a rag tag bunch [sorry if you're reading, ChrisfromStroud, but others were even less polite at the Oval.]
Having failed to make the cut at Lord's, Jade Dernbach has been called into our squad. I'm sure he'll play and suspect that Arafat will miss out. Regardless of his patchy form, Arafat just didn't seem fit last night. Intriguingly, Clive's name was on the scorecard and not Arafat's - suggesting he only got a belated nod to play.
We did well to win at the Rose Bowl last month in CB 40. That was largely due to Jade's fourfer and the usual 76 from Le Roi with good support from Spriegel. Tahir didn't play that game. He's a class act and we'll need to watch out for him. Mind you, I said exactly the same thing about Murali just before Davies hit him for a six and two fours in the same over!
I expect Jewell, Wilson and Clive to once more be on the sidelines along with Arafat.

Re: surrey vs gloucestershire & hampshire twenty/20
Hello Guildford!
Agree with everything you say really. Dernbach must come back in and if Linley makes way instead of Arafat it'll be a real disservice to his current form. Arafat has looked poor and from what I've heard not fit yesterday. Only other way is Spriegal/Schofield making way and moving Arafat up the order. Would weaken the batting though and spinners will be vital tonight I think.
How we play Tahir along with Briggs may well decide the game. Both very good in 20/20, a big test for our young top four with the likes of Cork,Mascherenas and Wood to deal with aswell. The boys in that top 4 definetly have the talent to do it though! Should be an entertaining match!

Re: surrey vs gloucestershire & hampshire twenty/20
I still think we were a batter light in our starting eleven yesterday,
Batty,Dernbach,Linely and Nannes as four bowlers then Spriegal and De Bryun can make up the fifth bowler rather than playing a fifth recognised bowler like we did yesterday.
Hamilton - Brown
Davies
Roy
De Bryun
Maynard
Lancefield
Spriegal
Batty
Nannes
Linely
Dernbach

Re: surrey vs gloucestershire & hampshire twenty/20
Following up on a few points raised by Depressed and others recently:
* I agree the team looks a batter light - that's why I (wrongly!) predicted Batty to miss out last night in favour of Wilson. However, Adams seems to prefer us having a wide range of bowlers in the one day tournaments. I thought (wrongly again!) that de Bruyn would bowl last night.
* Schofield was a bit better last night than his figures suggest. His first over was poor, tossing it up too much and getting walloped. However, he came back later for one more and was more on the money. He had a catch dropped on the boundary (by Batty) which went for four. If that had stuck, his figures would have been an almost reasonable 1 - 17 off 2 overs rather than 0 - 21.
* I'm a bit concerned about Lancefield. He currently seems a long way off the firsts and his contract is up this year.

Things definitely look bad, especially after how well Hants batted the other day. Need some heroics from Brain, Spriegs and Schofield. A batsman light? I'd say so!
