The Last Film watched (CONTAINS STAR WARS SPOILERS!!)
First topic message reminder :
I watch two films over the last few days
Seventh Son: Absolute tosh, it felt like a bad D&D film from SyFy
The Wedding Ringer: It was a fun movie, predictable but fun, "Who the hell are these guys, it's like the Goonies grew up and became r@pists"

Re: The Last Film watched (CONTAINS STAR WARS SPOILERS!!)
There's common themes and there's complete stupidity on the part of the Empire/First Order
"Hey guys, remember how we built two of these giant planet destroyers, and then those horrible rebels somehow took down the shields and found our weak point? Should we build another one and fail to guard those shields again?"

Re: The Last Film watched (CONTAINS STAR WARS SPOILERS!!)
My other gripe with the film was Captain Phasma.
Pre-film it was all built up how there was this powerful female Stormtrooper leader, in the film though she's in it for all of 5 minutes, is forced into servitude before suffering a presumed torturous death (thanks to the supposed good guys!) in a trash compactor though we'll never know as she was that much of a bit part they don't show it.

Re: The Last Film watched (CONTAINS STAR WARS SPOILERS!!)
I think the point with Kylo Ren was that he still had good in him. I think the next film will probably see him as a much more sinister character - obviously with the disfiguration and prosthetics. I think there is a lot of potential for him
My only criticism of the film is the big baddie. I think they should have had a humanised character like the original emperor. That CGI thing looked like the bloke off Harry Potter

My wife came with us to watch it, she'd never seen any of the other films so I gave her a brief synopsis of the originals beforehand, first thing she said to me as we came out was that hadn't I told her the plot of the Force Awakens before we got there.
I read a review that was titled 'The greatest disappointing film ever made', I think that's quite apt for it.
Some of those are recurring characters and you don't find out about the famoly relation until empire strikes back.
It's good vs evil in the Star Wars universe, there are going to be common themes.
Don't think it was disappointing at all, if you wanna see that watch episode 1 again.
Here's one that someone else has penned regarding the similarities and how they played it safe...
- Seriously if you can't see the headline about Star Wars and still moan about seeing a spoiler then god help you.:
1. There’s a droid carrying valuable information who finds himself on a desolate desert planet.
2. There’s a Force-sensitive, masked, and darkly clothed antagonist who arrives on the scene shortly after the information is handed off, looking for the droid.
3. There’s a desert settlement that is wiped out by stormtroopers.
4. There’s a hero who’s tortured by the bad guys to retrieve the information.
5. There’s a lonely, Force-strong desert dweller who dreams of more.
6. There’s a worldly old warrior who has to explain the Force to the next generation.
7. There’s a cruel military officer who holds a comparable level of authority to his Force-sensitive, masked, and darkly clothed colleague.
8. There’s a mostly unseen supreme evil that’s pulling the strings from the shadows.
9. There’s a criminal element that’s owed a debt by Han Solo and attempts to kill him after he screws up their arrangement.
10. There’s a cantina filled with various alien creatures.
11. There’s a moment when one of the heroes abandons the fight as a self-preservation measure, but he eventually returns.
12. There’s a massive spherical weapon that’s used to destroy a planet.
13. There’s a base belonging to the rebel forces on a forest-covered world.
14. There’s a surrogate father figure who is cut down by someone previously close to him, who has turned to the dark side.
15. The hero watches helplessly from afar as the surrogate father figure is slayed.
16. There’s a coordinated aerial attack on the massive spherical weapon that’s monitored from a control room by Leia.
17. There’s a trench that X-wings flew through in order to fire on a vulnerability in the weapon and destroy it.
18. There’s a massive explosion that gives the rebels a major victory but likely allows the Force-sensitive, masked, and darkly clothed antagonist to survive to fight another day.

Chewy must be using Just For Wookie!
Ren does have potential, it's just a case of the writers giving the character some depth. Just hope he doesn't do a DV and kill loads and has a mid-life crisis and becomes good and snuffs it.

Despite all my posts above I do actually think the new characters were very good and were great castings especially Ridley.

I've never seen anything on screen to rival Episode VII. It was an incredible, emotional ride and one that will stick with me for life. That must be how our parents saw Episode IV back in '77.

Aslo The girls jedi mind stuff, how she was able to do it without any training, wasnt a huge fan of hers.
Fin was good.
Only 2 bad things for.
Enjoyed it on the whole though.

Could someone change the topic heading to include Barton Fink spoilers as well because John Goodman's character is the devil.
Excellent movie, Barton Fink, doesn't get the v2 credit it deserves.

The Force Awakens - it was both a great tribute to the old movies (the good old ones) and an amazing new movie. Long may it continue, though with the way the story seems to be heading I don't think the next sequels will beat this one.

- Spoiler:
Yes there are some very close similarities in terms of story structure, however there are a lot of contrasts within some of those. Ren choosing dark and being tempted by the light is in contrast to anakin in 1-3. Heroine is determined to return to jakku when luke just wanted to leave etc
Things like the cantina are just nods to the originals.
With regards rens mask there are multiple reasons and the most probable is merchandise!
It's Star Wars, some of those complaints are on par with complaining there are x wings and lightsabres!!

It was the small things that did it for me though. Like the use of the bowcaster; Poe closing his s-foils to fit through the narrow gap, then re-opening them; BB8's thumbs-up moment; Admiral Ackbar looking like he's about to crap himself. Mouse droids, training spheres, there were a thousand little touches that were just scintillating.

I feel I need to add to that and mention how I thought General Hux was a far more menacing villain than Kylo Ren, also love how he continued to taunt Ren's failing throughout the movie. Hux is played by Domnhall Gleeson and to be fair I really didn't recognise him - his character was very Hitler-like! I also felt they and the 'storm troopers' were nodding back to that darker part of history with their salute - it was surely very effective on audiences.

Re: The Last Film watched (CONTAINS STAR WARS SPOILERS!!)
A week ago I went to see Bridge of Spies. It was quite simply the best film I have seen this year, and there's been a few good ones.
Tom Hanks is superb as the lawyer who is charged with firstly defending a Soviet spy in a case he can't possibly win, then he has to negotiate with both the East Germans and the Soviets to try and broker a deal to exchange the spy for a US pilot and a student, all in a recently split cold war Berlin.
For all his brilliance though, Hanks is outdone by the fabulous Mark Rylance as said spy. His monosyllabic delivery is perfectly timed and occasionally very funny. Although it's over 2 hours, I did not notice.
9.5/10
I have also seen the new Star Wars film and can recommend it to both old and new fans. Am slightly unsure on the Andy Serkis character but thought it had just the right amount of humour whilst the action sequences were superb. I also had the privilege of watching in 3D IMAX. Star Destroyer in the cinema! Well worth a watch. 8/10

Loved TFA. Ok you can compare to A New Hope but it was brilliant nonetheless. Loved the new characters, Poe in particular, and the way the old stuff and characters were introduced (Rey living in a wrecked AT-AT) I think only the EU uber geeks can pick holes in this film..

Re: The Last Film watched (CONTAINS STAR WARS SPOILERS!!)
Saw Star Wars. I'm not huge on it, but ive watched all the others and quite liked all of them (all of them, I thought 1,2,3 did a decent job in a messy situation)
Was a good film, not too long, interesting new characters, visually impressive, some good references that were not over the top.
It was also lazy. Convenient and lazy. R2D2 may have some extremely important info?! Lets put him under this cloth. Hey, both this sanitary department ex-stormtrooper and young female pilot can both match the fighting skills of a trained Kylo Ren.
The baddies were the same baddies as ever. It kind of negated the ending to the 6th (sequential) film.
I thought the bit where they showed they'd built a drastically bigger ship than the Death Star was awful. And had no bearing on what happened. And not starting on how that whole sequence was just a recap of the one in the other films.
That said, there were some very good performances. John Boyega was great as Finn (although the bromance with Poe was a bit strong a bit fast). Harrison Ford managed to recapture the glory of Solo without feeling like he was just being an old man version of a past character.
Han Solo's death was very well done and showed that sentiment was not too strong in this reboot. To use wrestling parlance, Kylo needed that to cement his heel character.
I thought the girl was wooden as hell.
Samey, but enjoyably so. And I was happy Luke was given reverence; I honestly thought they'd be so desperate to make it all about the young guys that they'd make him seem unimportant now.
Just a shame there were no fresh ideas.

Re: The Last Film watched (CONTAINS STAR WARS SPOILERS!!)
I saw Star Wars on Tuesday and absolutely loved it.
Rey and Kylo-Ren were the stars for me. Wasn't particularly enamoured with Finn, something annoing about his character that I couldn't quite put my finger on. Plenty of potential with Poe too, just didn't see enough of him. Han Solo is just Han Solo - class.
The only times I felt they overdid the call backs were with the smack you in the face bigger Death Star graphics, all I could think of was the Family Guy 'Bigger Jaws' bit and the whole flying down the trench bit at the end. Felt everthing else was pretty good.
Wasn't convinced by Snoke's look either. Didn't look particularly menacing to me, but will reserve judgement till you see him 'in the flesh' as it were, rather than hologram.
Like I said, loved it though.

Re: The Last Film watched (CONTAINS STAR WARS SPOILERS!!)
Watched a bit of The Revenant late last night, fell asleep before I could finish it off. From what I've seen so far it really isn't interesting - I had high hopes for it and it's also previously been billed as the film that could finally get Leo an Oscar; I don't see what that is based on. What he goes through and survives is pretty unrealistic, and he's one of those typical 'good guys' who has been mixing with the indigenous population so somehow he's better than everyone else - that kind of thing just bores me these days. It's an actual DVD copy that has leaked online so my advice is to download or stream it and save yourself that 9-12 quid!

Re: The Last Film watched (CONTAINS STAR WARS SPOILERS!!)
Finally got round to watching the new Star Wars and have to say Kylo Ren turns a 9/10 into a 5.5/10, he is that awful as a character, the far more interesting Darth Maul was dispatched by now. The rest of the film was more reminiscent of the original trilogy and totally agree with the comparisons to New Hope, it is effectively a rebooting of that but with some temperamental teenager with daddy issues instead of the far more Sith like Darth Vader.
If Ren goes on to have a big part in the next two films then it will be a major disappointment.
Mikey, the Revenant is based on the true story of Hugh Glass, who's reported injuries are far worse than the film suggests.

I'll have to look it up but it still sounds unrealistic, particularly at the time. BTW we're just talking about the film here rather than the actual event - I'm catching up on the movie now as we speak and it is still very uninteresting. I think this movie is only going to appeal to Americans wanting to know about their early history.

The actor who plays ren looks like a winey bitch and has a face uou want to punch, I feel this is a problem for him.
Overall his character is unstable and his training is not completed.
Yes the fact the conpletely untrained Jedi holds her own requires a leap of faith but the audience wont tolerate no Jedi duels - as we've had 6 Star Wars movies already. So you eother do this or bring Luke in early when he is the selling point for episode 8.

I don't reckon she's completely untrained. My money would be on her being left on Jakku after Ren killed the rest of the apprentices for safety. Why she doesn't remember anything... No idea.

You could have had the exact same end with Kylo winning and the ground splitting.
Finn not being obliterated right away was worse for me. Random stormtrooper holding a lightsaber for the 2nd time vs injured trained sith should not be a contest. I get his character, but he just came off as completely weak rather than unstable

It's also the first time in the films that a Sith or Jedi for that matter hasn't anticipated being shot at, that for me was just as bad as being an awful duelist, just a terrible character that you know will somehow kill Luke in 8 setting up revenge for Rey in 9.
What's more likely is that Rey is related in some way to the Skywalkers, most probably the daughter of Luke.

Yes, though that doesn't go with the Jedi code. Would be another parallel with anakin.
If there is another I sm your father type reveal then I'll just have to concede they are blatant rewrites.
That's a good idea jdizzle.
I reckon Finn also has the force.

I quite like Rolo (as I am now calling him), I thought the part was acted well and that the death of Han was necessary.
I like the idea of Luke having a daughter somewhere. I'd hope he kisses her too, he ruddy loves getting down to it with members of his family.

If they were brining the old guardback, would have liked to have seen Lando back.

Re: The Last Film watched (CONTAINS STAR WARS SPOILERS!!)
Finally got round to seeing the Star Wars film.
And well to be honest thought it was disappointing.
The whole film just seemed to reminiscence on the first/last films (4/5/6), even down to the planet sets, which is fine but I wanted the story to move on. The bad guys don't strike you as scary. And as for the end, everyone in cinema just looked at each other and were saying what that's it.
As for Rey & Kylo Ren- I think they're brother and sister. And I think there's another brother to come in.
In the books if I remember right, Luke does have a kid (and a wife). But it's a boy.

Re: The Last Film watched (CONTAINS STAR WARS SPOILERS!!)
I saw the Star Wars film last week, I thought it was enjoyable but not great. The storyline was a little familiar but then I always thought that it was too much of a coincidence that two robots managed to survive all of the first 6 films.
Despite complaints about the film, people in the cinema where I watched it, gave it a round of applause. I didn't clap, but I may go and see the film again.

Re: The Last Film watched (CONTAINS STAR WARS SPOILERS!!)
Avoided this thread till I've seen the new Star Wars, finally got round to it tonight. Was expecting a totally new film and was looking forward to it and not knowing what was going to happen. Instead I got a remake of the first where I knew everything that was going to happen. Still a very good film (so it should be, the story to the original was belting) and great to see the special effects in full flow which the original can't provide to anybody who couldn't watch it when it first came out.
I just hope the rest don't just follow same suit, I watch fiction to be surprised and not know what's going on. If I didn't I could watch titanic again and be equally unsurprised

If the next Star Wars film is similar to The Empire Strikes Back (best in the series) then I'll be disappointed. However, I'm not surprised that the first film after 32 years (forgetting the prequels) has familiarity to it. They wanted to tap into the history of the first three films and the new film was a nice and safe way of continuing the saga.

CREED - Pointless addition to the already creaking ROCKY franchise. Nothing new added to the tale (it's basically a rehash of the original story with a kid from nowhere getting a shot at the champ), but couldn't care less about the lead character and the training and fight scenes are the same old same old).
THE HATEFUL 8 - Decent enough but nothing special film with Tarantino's now familiar formula (the mention of Red Apple tobacco, seemingly endless dialogue with characters going on and on instead of getting to the f*cking point). Worth watching but perhaps only once
SICARIO - not sure what the point of this film was and definitely don't understand the rave reviews it's been getting

The Hateful 8 - if you're a Tarrantino buff then you'd probably think it's far from his best work. That said I thought it was a great movie and I enjoyed it throughout. Think of Pulp Fiction, Django and Reservoir Dogs - plenty of elements from those three surreal movies rolled into one. Like Dave said I think it might only be watchable the one time (like Reservoir Dogs) as when you know the twists and turns it's going to take it becomes less appealing. Pulp Fiction still remains my favourite Tarrantino film by far.

The Big Short. I enjoyed this film enormously. To make a film about the global financial crisis and such things as dry and impenetrable as Credit Derivatives both amusing and understandable is no mean feat, but the film makers have done it. Highly recommend this film. Not sure there is anything much in the way of a likeable character to be found anywhere, but as a cautionary tale it worked extremely well, whilst also being very watchable.

I got a splinter in my finger a while back and it was very painful even after dabbing it with TCP and putting a plaster on yet we're expected to believe this c*nt survived being mauled by a bear (apparently being ripped to the bone and throat almost torn out) with nothing more than a few dirty rags applied and then eating a few bits of grass, leftover meat from a long dead animal, raw fish and bison liver. Like f*ck he did. Sounds like a tale seanmichaels would tell in his less fanciful moments. All this film needs is Leo eating hot chips of the back of some gorgeous bird with massive t!ts then inventing the i-phone in order to achieve maximum bullsh!t points.mikey_dragon wrote:Hammersmith harrier wrote:
Mikey, the Revenant is based on the true story of Hugh Glass, who's reported injuries are far worse than the film suggests.
I'll have to look it up but it still sounds unrealistic, particularly at the time. BTW we're just talking about the film here rather than the actual event - I'm catching up on the movie now as we speak and it is still very uninteresting. I think this movie is only going to appeal to Americans wanting to know about their early history.
