The Last Film watched (CONTAINS STAR WARS SPOILERS!!)
First topic message reminder :
I watch two films over the last few days
Seventh Son: Absolute tosh, it felt like a bad D&D film from SyFy
The Wedding Ringer: It was a fun movie, predictable but fun, "Who the hell are these guys, it's like the Goonies grew up and became r@pists"

Re: The Last Film watched (CONTAINS STAR WARS SPOILERS!!)
Ride Along 2. I have no idea why I went to see this other than I have a cinema card and there was not much else on. Kevin Hart is quite simply the most annoying person on screen since Chris Tucker's Ruby Rhod. Ice Cube does what he does best (i.e. Look p'd off a LOT), there's a vague storyline and that bloke from Miss Congeniality as an rubbish bad guy.
There's a car chase, some gunfire and some bits that are supposed to be funny but are not. It's for want of a better phrase f***ing awful. 2/10

Saw Kevin Hart in "Get Hard" with Will Ferrell. He's truly terrible (Hart not Ferrell, I know some don't like him but occasionally he makes me laugh in spite of myself). I'm amazed at how popular Hart's stand up shows are though. Poor Man's Chris Rock. I tried watching one on Netflix. I lasted five minutes...it was turd but probably not as turd as that film Stella's trying to get me to watch

Midnight Cowboy
Went into as someone skeptical of Voight and Hoffman's acting prowess but after two hours of grimy unrelenting misery was in doubt that their performances stand level with any from their more revered peers. It is a testament to Voight (a native New Yorker) that at no point do you look past the character he is portraying, the accent stays believable and true throughout.
The film itself is harrowing in an understated way, it doesn't try to hammer the point home but elegantly through flashback gives a clear understanding of why Joe Buck has decided to take the path he has. Abandoned by his mother, neglected by his Grandmother with strong implications of sexual abuse and then the gang r*** of he and his one true love; the scars manifest themselves as a slow witted and childlike manboy unknowing of the real nature of the world.
We then move on to Hoffman's Ratso, a disabled and ill conman who seems on the verge of death at all times, where New York tramples on Buck, he takes him and guides him through the grim city, all the while doing it for his own financial gain. After many travails that see the pair struggling to survive they seem to be on an upward spiral but Ratso's ill health makes it inevitable that their will be no happy ending.
The closing scene is the clearest insight into Buck's psyche, his naivety seeing him believe and extoll that Miami will see their lives improve whilst the only friend he has quietly dies besides him. The film ends with you not looking at Buck as a fully grown man but as child lost and alone in a world he doesn't understand.
9.5/10- The screenplay, performances and character development is staggeringly good.

Recently re-watched Thor Dark World, I remember being a bit confused the last time I watched it, I was this time too but to a far lesser extent. It's a great movie though. Thor is a Marvel film that works quite well considering how many (at least in my eyes) have been abject failures. I'm thinking Civil War will go this way too despite it being a good action movie.

creed- its not terrible but its not good either
biggest bug bear with me was the main character was a annoying little pr!ck. the greatest thing about the rocky series was, that rocky was very likable and you found yourself really routing for him. in this for some reason he more of a gobsh!te like a mayweather as a result you really couldnt care less if he wins
music is terrible, full of crap r and b. not a 80's song in sight.
the story is far too fast tracked, he has one fight and gets a title shot against pound for pound best? who's tony bleeding bellew!! andre ward looked much pretty as the role in the two seconds he stars in it, and at least he's got some credibility for the role
goodison park holds 100,000??!!!

Go back and see my "review" of the Revenant. Don't rate it anywhere near as much as the Oscar people seem to. "The Martian" is also about one man's survival against incredible odds yet I found it more believable
Hateful 8 - It's good but there are a few things that annoy me. Tarantino cites Leone as his favourite director and yet Leone's work is littered with long passages of silence whereas Quentin feels compelled to fill as much of his film as possible with dialogue that, in some cases, starts to grate on the nerves
One such passage (paraphrased)
"You have a letter?"
"Yeah
"From Lincoln?"
"Yeah"
"Abraham Lincoln?"
"Yeah"
"The President?"
"Yeah"
"Of America?"
"Yeah?"
"You have a letter from Abraham Lincoln?"
"Yeah"
"That he wrote to you?"
Yeah
At which point do you not shoot this person in the face?
Anyway,
Watched the ISIS training video last night sorry "Four Lions"
Given everything that's gone on recently I thought it might be time to give it a whirl. Anything by Chris Morris is bound to be of high quality and this is no different. Funny and tragic at the same time.

That woman is only second to Kim Kardashian in how vain she is. I was watching a poor Jason Statham film (Parker) where she moans "I'm pushing 40". She was 44 at the time. I very much doubt that the film-makers put that line in... She's one "actress" I genuinely cannot stand. Not really that great eye candy-wise nowadays...

Re: The Last Film watched (CONTAINS STAR WARS SPOILERS!!)
I saw "Spotlight" on Monday and I have to say I thought it was an excellent film. One could argue that it would have been better as a documentary, but I thought that the idea of watching how a scandal (the Catholic Church in Boston protecting its clergy when they have been abusing kids) unfolds through the eyes of the investigating journalists was a great one.
The casting is first class. Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams, Mark Ruffalo, Liev Schreiber, John Slattery, Billy Crudup, Brian d'arcy James and of course Stanley Tucci are all great choices for their roles and they all deliver.
In today's world where cover-ups of historic abuse by celebrities and high-ranking officials alike have only recently come to the surface, it's fascinating to see how this team of investigative journalists grabbed it like a dog with a favourite toy and simply refused to let go, ignoring all pressure (some subtle, some less so) from the Church to halt their inquiries.
Well worth a watch, although some content is a little strong. 8.5/10

She's a very sexy lady and I can cope with that. Think she's good in Out of Sight, she has good chemistry with Clooney and I even overlooked the fact that the character she plays in Elmore Leonard's book is actually blonde haired and blue eyed.Mr Bounce wrote:DAVE667 wrote:Is this the film where the lad says he's got her a first edition of "The Iliad" or similar?westisbest wrote:Boy Next Door.

As for her acting I can take it or leave it...I usually leave it. If it was a choice between going to the cinema watching a film with her or Halle Berry...I'd stay in and watch something else

I saw "The Revenant" on Tuesday night, i thought it was absolutely excellent.
It gripped me from start to finish, the work Leonardo Dicaprio puts into his acting made it feel like i was on the journey with him, feeling his characters emotions.

Nymphomaniac Vol. 1 via Netflix. Considering the fact that I had no hope for this at all, and that I turned it off after I heard the opening theme tune before returning to it later on, it was remarkable. I'll move onto Vol. 2 next week as I have a heavy weekend coming up...

Dallas Buyers Club
Very good film, I didn't realise sean had allowed a biopgraphy of his life to come out, or that he faked his death, but, that being said, a mate of his did bang a bird whilst eating chips off her back and he's fingered Sonia from Eastenders or some nonsense, so i shouldn't be surprised.
It is a very enjoyable film, have to admire Leto's acting ability as Rayon, though both main actors deserved the plaudits. Shame afterwards that the film is quite far from the truth in terms of how Woodroof was perceived and what he was like in real life and how he actually wasn't the pioneering hero that they made out.

Predestination: Decent enough sci fi film although the plot twists weren't overly hard to figure out once the first one was out of the way. Ethan Hawke was pretty good and the female lead whos name escapes me was very good. 7/10

Re: The Last Film watched (CONTAINS STAR WARS SPOILERS!!)
Just on StarWars.... since it's in the title and I didn't get around to commenting on it.
Overall... shyte. Shyte because of the money and resources thrown at it and it knowing it had to live up to the promise.
A few more direct reasons -
1. A surprisingly cardboard cheap cut-out look to sets at times - and very unconvincing post-battle scenes, where bits of stuff burned in a few places to 'pretend' violence and mayhem but nope, you just thought of the prop guys walking around and lighting their little neat piles before 'Action' was called.
2. A dark Lord of Evil who only needs his mask for.................. well, for added menace one assumes, considering he doesn't need it for anything else. When he takes off his mask, he's a Disney Prince from one of their cozy animated tales. Terrible concept and instant tension killer to unmask an Evil Overlord simply to get the girls drooling over what's underneath. A betrayal of all that Vader was and stood for.
3. Biggest issue. The physics of flight. The Falcon was let down terribly, as were other vehicles, by a criminal lack of physics theory on how these craft would fly as their weight lunged from one side to another in dogfights. The beauty of the old Star Wars movies is that the machinery had the bite of realism and the Falcon especially looked and felt heavy and mechanical and mostly adhered to natural physics. If it turned a corner you'd feel the heavy effort to do so but would delight at the old rust bucket managing to make it. It felt real.
Some of the turns it was managing in the new movie were just all wrong and were done by animators that hadn't a clue how heavy but powerful machinery would operate in tight angles.
It's the little things that kill off the illusion quickly

Can't agree more, if I got to choose the Oscar winners this would win best picture, Ruffalo best supporting actor and McAdams best supporting actress.

Saw it yesterday, hard to disagree with the two reviews above, though I would agree as well that it could/would have been better as a documentary.

A film was the right medium to reach the widest possible audience which something like this needs, it's doubtful i'd have watched a documentary on it.

Just got back from watching Deadpool.
Great film.
Good action, lot of funny lines.
Ryan Reynolds is suited to this part, made it his own. Played it perfectly.
If you are going to watch it, stick around till the end of the credits.
Very enjoyable.

Valid-ish point. Not sure that it "needed" to be seen though as pedo rings are forever in the news.

The new Point Break.
It has good stunts etc but the original film was waaaay better. The story in this didn't make sense and they skipped lots of parts. Great scenery though. Typical modern hollywood film.
The Revenent
A good film. Brutal, gritty survival type of film. Nicely made film too. Only complaint was it dragged on a bit.
Star Wars 7
Utter crap for all the money resources they had to make it. Worse than the originals. Nothing made sense and it was a typical JJ Abrams action scene after action scene type film.

Great film.
Good action, lot of funny lines.
Ryan Reynolds is suited to this part, made it his own. Played it perfectly.
If you are going to watch it, stick around till the end of the credits.
Very enjoyable.
Best 'Superhero' film in years, doesn't take itself seriously at all and rips the X-men franchise to pieces throughout, the only downside was the backstory which they could have got out the way at the beginning. 8/10.

As long as it keeps him from trying to act for 2 hours.

The x men references were funny.
I quite liked the way they went back and forth with the story.

Galted will be overjoyed to know they're currently filming John Wick 2

John Wick was much better than the Equaliser I thought - a few people were going down on that film at the time. I'm getting a bit tired of Denzel doing the same ol.

Thought they were comparable. Enjoyed both and could stick my brain in the fridge knowing I wouldn't be using it for a couple of hours. Denzel has a good body of work and the film industry are still capitalizing on the surprising success of "Taken" therefore making action thrillers with older actors.
It's like when "Se7en" was such a hit the started making films with the older established actors and young thrusting sexy sidekick...with mixed results.

Did you just claim that Brad Pitt was a "young thrusting sexy sidekick"? I would have thought that Entrapment would have been a more hetro suggestion but each to their own!

Don't have to be gay to see why women fancy the likes of Depp, Pitt and Clooney. In fact, I'd suggest most men confident in their own heterosexuality can admit they see why women like these men (whilst secretly being filled with barely suppressed rage at the injustice of it all).Adam D wrote:Did you just claim that Brad Pitt was a "young thrusting sexy sidekick"? Fighting Demons with Sean Bean. Just avoid it. Astonishingly bad acting & dreadful plot, whereby Bean gets out of prison & ends up working at a Pizza restaurant, run by Tom Arnold. It's terrible stuff.

Unless you were blindfolded, marched into a room with a gun to your head and the film shown to you as soon as it was removed, there should have been some point where you looked at cast and plot and thought "F*ck this!" and decided to watch ANYTHING else.LiamB wrote:Fighting Demons with Sean Bean. If I saw, "Joey Essex plays a particle physicist who falls in love with the spirit of Roseanne Barr and together they hope to take down an international sex ring rung by Joe Pasquale and Wee Jimmy Krankie" I'd be heading for the hills
Zero sympathy for you
