The Last Film watched (CONTAINS STAR WARS SPOILERS!!)
First topic message reminder :
I watch two films over the last few days
Seventh Son: Absolute tosh, it felt like a bad D&D film from SyFy
The Wedding Ringer: It was a fun movie, predictable but fun, "Who the hell are these guys, it's like the Goonies grew up and became r@pists"

Commando - Top class Arnie cheese.
Started watching the Hobbit but just cannot get into it (felt the same with the book too).
The Cove - I watched this a few weeks back but it's heartbreaking, breaking things inducing and just incredible all at the same time. Brilliant documentary that should be made compulsory viewing in my eyes, need to see blackfish now.
Catching the Friedmans - Holy poopie, this was a really weird one. Another must for anyone intrested in 'possible' miscarriages of justice but also some really really creepy stuff.
I watched this a while back. It's brilliant, but really does open your eyes to how negligent Seaworld have been to their trainers and the way they treat the animals is shocking.

FFS if you'd mentioned that earlier I'd have known which film you were on about. I've also seen it, it had that person in who's already been in something else...has a face at the front of their head and a body underneath that.Rowley wrote:DAVE667 wrote:Super, saying "I watched a film" would have been suffice, stop teasing us!superflyweight wrote:Sing Street. Re: The Last Film watched (CONTAINS STAR WARS SPOILERS!!)
Found out I can watch free movies on Amazon video as I have a prime account, so watched a couple of movies this weekend.
The first one, was a movie that I have been looking for for quite a while, as it still hasnt appeared on Sky or Netflix.
It Follows - The director/ writer of this is a big fan of John Carpenter, specifically Halloween. The cinematography and soundtrack are incredibly reminiscent of Johns masterpieces (and to some extent also Assault on Precinct 13).
The film is about a sexually transmitted monster/ ghost! Basically, you will be followed by a monster that can take the shape of anyone who will stalk you at a walking pace. If it catches up with you, it will kill you. The only way to pass on the curse is to sleep with someone else. But if they die, it then reverts back to you.
Very simple idea but a brilliant one, in my opinion. Because the monster can look like anyone but only be seen by those infected, it creates a real tension in the scenes. And the fact that it walks towards the victim as opposed to running or jumping out for scares, it is really does remind you of the way Michael Myers used to walk in the first few Halloweens.
The location is also a throwback to Carpenter, and the leafy suburbs could have been Haddonfield as far as I knew. Finally the soundtrack is heavily synthed and adds brilliantly to the timelessness of the monster and its unrelenting menace.
It was quite slow but the way it was filmed kept me on my toes throughout. The wide, open backgrounds, meant that you were constantly looking for "it". Very clever and although the final third was the weakest, I really liked the ambiguous elements to the story.
A very clever little thriller/ horror that will be a marmite film but for me, a bit like Blair Witch (which most people hated), it will leave you thinking about it for some time afterwards.
9/10
The other film was Before I Go to Sleep with Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth. Another really slow, atmospheric film. I only watched it as the missus had read the book and loved it. It was okay and I liked the ending but not one I would watch again in a hurry.

My review centred around what the f*ck Nicole Kidman has done to her face. The film itself is garbage...boring garbage, not even good garbageAdam D wrote:Found out I can watch free movies on Amazon video as I have a prime account, so watched a couple of movies this weekend.

I'm conflicted. I did want to see It Follows, but Adam likes it and his taste in films is usually rubbish. But then he does like Halloween and John Carpenter and references both in his review so it might actually be a good film.

Watched The Nice Guys the other night and have to say it was pretty funny. Gosling is brilliant in it.
I also started watching Holidays. After 10 minutes, I realised that I should have been heavily under the influence of something and switched it off. Really really weird.
When I say weird, I mean sh*te.

It's a very decent film actually, Superfly, with some seriously exceptional moments. I watched it a while ago and enjoyed it.
It definitely isn't worthy of Adam's rambling w*nkathon above but then he's a flowery ponce who watches Moulin Rouge and drinks appletini and sh*te wine.
I would encourage you to watch it though.

Now You See Me Two. Arse Gravy. I watched it in the same weekend that I watched the truly appalling Bastille Day. Bastille Day won hands down. I'd rather shoot myself in the face and then have vinegar poured into the open wound than ever watch this again.

Central Intelligence - just got one of those MXQ players where you can stream from t'net to t'telly so clicked on that to test it out. Enjoyable hokum with the ever watchable Dwayne Johnson and the slightly less watchable but infinitely more thumpable Kevin Hart. Have tried watching Kevin Hart's stand-up to see what the fuss is about...I managed five minutes then switched off thinking, he's one unfunny c*nt and Americans are stupid.

A Night in Old Mexico - Robert Duvall plays an old rancher forced to leave his family ranch after defaulting on a bank loan. He refuses to go live in a trailer park and sets off for one last hurrah in Mexico with the grandson he's just met. A sub-plot of stolen money and hitmen adds to the mix. Nice little film and always worth watching Duvall do his thing! 7/10

I watched The Raid last night. Really enjoyed it and would echo all the rave reviews it got. It was very similar to the Judge Dredd movie with Karl Urban but obviously set in present time.
It got a bit silly at times but still a switch your brain off masterpiece.

Wouldn't normal respond to anything Ada posts but can I suggest you immediately watch Raid 2? Kicks the first one into a cocked hat. You may now continue being ignored

Re: The Last Film watched (CONTAINS STAR WARS SPOILERS!!)
The Raid is incredibly good and The Raid 2 is equally as good.
I think I probably just about prefer the first film as it really is a stripped back action film with almost zero plot and I don't think I could ever get bored of it.
The second is just all out nuts but with some semblance of a plot. The fight against hammer girl and baseball bat boy is ridiculously violent and I'm not sure I'll ever properly recover from having seen it.

Raid 2 tried to have a plot and I was annoyed by it. The chop socky action is simply awesome. the fight in the kitchen at the end is fantastic.

Re: The Last Film watched (CONTAINS STAR WARS SPOILERS!!)
Both of The Raid's are awesome. The area in which The Raid 2 let itself down was:
1. Hiring actors who's characters had died in the first movie and having them play somebody else in this one, that sh*te always confuses the hell out of me.
2. Epic fighting scenes but then they go and break one another's arms and carrying using them to fight with? That bit was reminiscent of a Van Damme B movie.

How Green Was My Valley
Disappointing, even allowing for the rampant overacting which seems to typify American and British films in the decades after the silent era (though the performances by the actors who played Huw and his parents were impressive). Disjointed, rushed and a bit cringeworthy. I do regard the Oscars with contempt, even more so knowing that this won over Citizen Kane.
Raising Arizona
A comedy classic despite the fact it stars Nicolas Cage. Must've seen it between 5 and 10 times and I still find the funny moments funny (especially the fight in the trailer) and the overboard moments tolerable. Not one of the Coens very best but certainly ranks in the top half. Certainly better than Big Lebowski and the non-Coens film How Green Was My Valley but not as good as Barton Fink.

As for similar films, I'm not sure there's much that compares to The Raid/Raid 2. Obviously there's John Woo's "Hard Boiled" with Chow Yun Fat but that's more guns than chop socky (plenty of dead bodies and OTT action). Netflix has oodles of this stuff although the standard tend to be somewhat mixed. Although his films tend to be chaff, you can't deny that Donnie Yen is still one of the best exponents of martial arts. He's been around years and whilst no Hollywood superstar, he's in that Jackie Chan/Jet Li bracket for quality practitioners.
That there is the sum of my chop socky knowledge

Judge Dredd could have done with much more killing. One hopes that any sequel (unlikely though it may be) remedies this glaring schoolboy error.

Re: The Last Film watched (CONTAINS STAR WARS SPOILERS!!)
The Ip Man trilogy is meant to be really good, haven't seen any of them yet but they are on my to watch list, the age rating suggests they aren't anywhere near as violent as the Raid. Prior to last week my whole opinion of martial arts films was based almost entirely on Enter the Dragon and the arty Johnny-Five, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and House of Flying Daggers.
