Change of anthem for England debate is being talked about again.
First topic message reminder :

MPs are to debate and vote on whether England should adopt an official national anthem.
The UK anthem, God Save the Queen, is currently used during some sporting events but Chesterfield MP Toby Perkins believes England should have its own.
He intends to bring his English National Anthem Bill to Parliament on 13 January.
If MPs voted in favour, a public consultation would be held to choose a song.
The Labour MP said: "I have nothing against God Save the Queen but that is the national anthem of the United Kingdom.
"England is a component part of the UK but it competes as a country in its own right and I think a song that celebrated England rather than Britain would be more appropriate."
Mr Perkins said he was proud to be both English and British but they were "not the same thing".
His proposed new law would bestow a responsibility on the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport to hold a consultation.
All relevant sporting bodies would be instructed to use the chosen anthem prior to international sporting contests, at medal awarding ceremonies and whenever else a national anthem was required for teams or athletes representing England.
God Save the Queen would continue to be used for teams or individuals representing Great Britain or the UK.
"I hope that Scots and Welsh will also recognise this not as an anti-union move, but a pro-union one," said Mr Perkins.
"By recognising that England is a component part of the union but a different entity, I think this strengthens both our Englishness but also reminds us all of what the union is."
Liberal Democrat MP Greg Mulholland raised the same issue in Parliament in 2010.
Prime Minister David Cameron has said that Jerusalem would be his choice for England's national anthem, according to the ConservativeHome website.
Jerusalem was chosen as the anthem to be played for English athletes competing at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi following a month-long public vote.
Voters were able to choose from three songs, and Jerusalem beat both the UK national anthem and the anthem previously used for English athletes competing at Commonwealth Games.
Jerusalem drew 52.5% of the votes
Land of Hope and Glory was voted for by 32.5%
God Save The Queen was voted for by 12%

In light of England's performance at the RWC and the foolballers regular flatter to deceive attempts "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" may be better

We'll send you over a fella called Phil Coulter - the fella who gave us the dreaded Ireland's call. Either than or we can send you over a guy called Pete St John who wrote the Fields of Athenry, the song about a town in Connacht that Munster stole.
The whole thing about anthems has been done on these boards before and some people adopted the view: Rousing - France, Italy, Argentine, Wales; Dreary - England, NZ, Australia; In-between: Ireland, Scotland, SA

What an absolute beautiful song that is, I even like Liverpool FC's version of it, Fields of Anfield Rd.

The Fields of Athenry is such a stirring tune on any level but for me it's just Irish rugby through and through. It's one I wouldn't mind hearing to replace the two we currently have to rouse all spirits, we need to shorten the Irish opening ceremonies somehow with red carpet and two anthems taking far to long.
Is there anything more rousing than hearing many thousands of Welsh fans sing their lungs out to Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau or Scottish fans giving their all to Flower of Scotland? The Italians and French have jaunty anthems you could even have a wee dance to but England persevere with GSTQ, a beloved anthem to many of us UK-wide but not an uplifting tune or for that matter in any way specifically English.

to be honest I find Flower of Scotland to be a fairly dreadful dirge. GSTQ isn't much better, but at least it's short. The French one is even more fun if you understand the words, bloodthirsty violence
Jerusalem would be fine, how would Land of Hope and Glory work? Just the final chorus is surely a bit short? Quite like the music though.

If they play the orchestral introduction do we get to do that up-and-down head-bobbing thing they do?

The word enwogion translates literally into celebrities. I have always used that word as a meaning of men of importance/authority it's how you chose to look at it. The Welsh language is constantly evolving, what was meant as one word 100 years ago, might not mean the same thing today.
Having 'celebrities' in the lyric only sounds daft because of what 'celebrity' has come to mean, i.e. people being in the public eye / on telly despite not having any discernible talent.
It sounds fine in Welsh because 'enwogion' hasn't taken on the connotations that 'celebrities' has.

God save our gracious Queen,
Long live our noble Queen,
God save the Queen!
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us,
God save the Queen!
O Lord our God arise,
Scatter her enemies,
And make them fall.
Confound their politics,
Frustrate their knavish tricks,
On Thee our hopes we fix,
God save us all.
Thy choicest gifts in store,
On her be pleased to pour,
Long may she reign.
May she defend our laws,
And ever give us cause,
To sing with heart and voice,
God save the Queen!
Long live our noble Queen,
God save the Queen!
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us,
God save the Queen!
O Lord our God arise,
Scatter her enemies,
And make them fall.

4. Not in this land alone,
But be God's mercies known,
From shore to shore!
Lord make the nations see,
That men should brothers be,
And form one family,
The wide world over.
5. From every latent foe,
From the assassins blow,
God save the Queen!
O'er her thine arm extend,
For Britain's sake defend,
Our mother, prince, and friend,
God save the Queen!
6. Lord grant that Marshal Wade
May by thy mighty aid
Victory bring.
May he sedition hush,
And like a torrent rush,
Rebellious Scots to crush.
God save the Queen!
With Scotland coming up this sounds like the perfect precursor to the game.

I vote for We Will Rock You. Or maybe Heroes, by Bowie. From being a national embarrassment, or anthem would become the envy of the world.
Well in the light of recent events, one of the two would probably be popular. Not sure how a song of love separated by the Berlin wall would equate to England though.

Given that our patron saint was as much Turkish as anything I wouldn't worry too much (Sort of fitting given what everybody says about our team selections..)

If England were to change their national anthem, why does it have to be and existing song that replaces it, why not write an entirely new one?

Big British boots go kick Bengali in the head
Police sit watchin'
The newspapers being read
Who dares to protest
After the attacker fled
Out came the batons and
The British warned themselves
This is England
The land of (il)legal dances
This is England
Land of a thousand stances
This is England
This knife of Sheffield steel
This is England
This is how we feel
