Placebo effect from meniscus surgery still working on Stenson.
So Spieth will apparently be monitored for the rest of the week as part of the new slow play initiative. Does that mean he is on the clock for the rest of the event or is it a token gesture?

Super, I think you will find it is the doctors still performing the surgery that have ignored the evidence.
It seems we are going through a phase that happens quite often where almost all your posts are an attack on me, and not about the golf conversations people are trying to have. A shame because it would be better to hear your thoughts on the topics at hand.

Re: European Tour 2016 - Dubai
Mac, you can quote stuff all you like, but unless you've actually read any of it you have NO IDEA as to what has happened with precisely the type of injury Stenson has had and what he's done to have it remedied. Did you just dig them out, or did you read them in conjunction with Stenson's medical records?
If you want to know why people attack you, it's because you attempt to claim something as fact you can't possibly know anything about. You are the king of wiki and the king of book blurbs which is the zenith of your knowledge on virtually every subject i.e., you're a specialist in nothing. You sound like Dinesh D'Souza or that other stumblebum Deepak Chopra

Super before you sound lime even more of a p***k than is strictly necessary, when was the last time D'souza or Chopra backed a position supported by the scientific literature?

My point was Mac, that neither you nor I are doctors. You cannot take an injury you know nothing about, and claim by virtue of a few hastily found sources that Stenson's operation was worthless. The crucial bit being you don't know Stenson's diagnosis, and you don't know for certain what operation was undertaken.

Re: European Tour 2016 - Dubai
It was actually reported in the media that he had undergone surgery to repair his meniscus, so we do know roughly what surgery he had.
I don't get what being a doctor (medical) has to do with it. Anyone with basic skills in reading scientific literature could understand those papers.

Re: European Tour 2016 - Dubai
My issue is how you jump to conclusions and believe everything you read as if it were fact.
Do you really think Stenson is going to undergo a snake oil operation? So just because it's reported he's had this issue, doesn't mean he does, and doesn't mean he's undergone superfluous surgery.
You're not a doctor of any type Mac, so not sure why you needed to put (medical) in brackets, so you've jumped to the conclusion about the type of surgery he's had, despite not considering any other meniscus operations which might be available and which might actually have merit. You also don't know if he had other surgery in the area.
I sincerely doubt you read any of those papers other than the abstract anyway.

There is no pleasing you. What is left if you refuse to accept peer reviewed papers?
Also nothing to do with snake oil operations, these papers are a review of mainstream medical practitioners who thought they were doing the right thing.
Anyway, back to my more important question.
What does it mean for Spieth now that he is being monitored for slow play?
What a way to make the world #1 feel like it was worth flying out to the middle of now where.

I get that, but is he effectively on the clock from the moment he tees off tomorrow? In what ways is he monitored more closely than the other players?

Re: European Tour 2016 - Dubai
As I understand it, they watch for possible culprits and warn them that they are being monitored (this happened to the Spieth group on around the 4th hole (their 13th). Once they are being monitored they get timed on every shot with some sort of formula as to how long they are allowed.
Spieth took too long with his putt on the 8th and was informed on the 9th tee that he'd received a penalty.
I don't know, but I would assume the 1st offense penalty carries over the rest of the week, but they may be back out of "monitored" status from tomorrow unless they seem slow again

Re: European Tour 2016 - Dubai
The only problem with that, and it's where Rory is correct about using "common sense" (see my note yesterday on my notes), is that if golfers are playing BEHIND someone who's slow, they are going to pace themselves so that they are not stop/starting.
If your group is "in position", that group should NOT be timed or penalized until and unless they fall behind.
Imagine Mark Russell is planning retribution against Rory at this very minute.

Of course I accept peer reviewed papers, what I amn't able to confirm is that Stenson had the same operation as described in those articles and neither are you, so stop with your conjecture. Plank.

It is ridiculous for golfers to get injured. I didn't say it wasn't, I didn't even imply it, but that has no bearing on whether anyone but Stenson and his doctors know the extent of his injury or what method was used to remedy it.
The issue was YOU declaring that Stenson had had a particular type of surgery when you couldn't possibly know.

I think there is also another perspective/effect to be factored in here. If a group is slow, it can allow the group ahead to unwittingly slow down a little too as they don't feel pressure to keep moving. So just because you're right behind the group in front is not necessarily a good reason to apply a common sense judgment, in the same way as saying "we're not holding up the group behind" is not an excuse for slow play either. In the professional world, I suspect the demands of the TV schedules are actually more significant in the concern over times.

If I have understood what you are saying then I agree. As soon as players start to think they can take a little longer for whatever reason - eg slow group in front - the combating slow play becomes impossible.
The players should play as quickly as possible and let the officials deal with slower groups.

Im not overly fussed with the whole slow play thing in professional golf. I do though think that Spieth did appear to take too long over that putt. a minute and a half or something. And he still missed. I dont like the idea that you can ask for your caddies opinion on putts though, its should be down to the player only.

I never understood what happen to players who need caddies to read their putts, surely they have to be able to putt/read the putts to get to a certain level without help?

Was Stenson's surgery specifically for OA-related meniscal problems? Or was it for an acute bit of damage?McLaren wrote:Super, I think you will find it is the doctors still performing the surgery that have ignored the evidence.

Re: European Tour 2016 - Dubai
Just got back from a weekend trip to the sandpit, and was lucky enough to watch the HSBC on Saturday. My observations are below for what they are worth.
The day itself was disrupted by fog, so saw the end of round 2 and up to 9 holes for the leaders in the afternoon.
The course is very much a resort course normally, with a range of tees and extra use of fertiliser on the rough to give it protection, as well as slick greens. Apart from the McIlroy afternoon group, viewing was an absolute pleasure. Can't imagine any other tournament this year where you can watch the World no. 1 chip with only you, him, his caddie and 4 other people next to you. Entry was also free, if you are HSBC customer - £10/$14.20 otherwise.
McIlroy - his driving is off the charts, and 3 wood on 18 in R2 to set up eagle was immense. No one I saw came close to him off the tee. His choice of footwear and red trousers were not a good look even for $100m !!!
Spieth - I watched 8 holes of him Saturday afternoon and it was a joy, -2 under par, no bogeys. He is an absolute machine on the greens, what was weird though on the practice green before play, he kept missing deliberately or otherwise! He had just had a chat with "Mr Paramour" so that may have had something to do with it! Overall he is Faldo like, minimum risk but even better at putting! Pace of play was pretty good 8 holes in 1 50 mins, and he did finish in just under 4 hours. Only dithered really on one putt in 8 holes.
Fowler - Of all the top players, genuinely seemed to enjoy it the most, at this point he was two off the lead, and just playing a casual 3 ball. Furthermore he had regular ish golf shoes on Saturday!
Stenson - Opposite of Fowler he is so serious it is scary, or may its just the sun glasses.
DeChambeau - didn't know about the same size irons until afterwards. 2nd hole, stuffed his drive into the trees, where we watch him smash back over on to the fairway. My brother in law decided to ask what club he had hit because the loft looked a lot for length of club. To be fair to Bryson, he did reply, 38 degrees, at which point I and my brother in law looked blankly at each other! A strange character it has to be said, did not see the lost ball incident on 9, as we had moved onto the Fowler group by then.
Other the players we saw, Larrazabal was highly emotional, from throwing his ball away in disgust to 30 seconds later, missing a hole in one by an inch! Darren Clarke has put on weight and back on the fags - was he ever off them? Bjorn is on the e-cigs and very much the old bear - not a lot has changed!
Only player I missed out on was Poulter, and he inevitably crashed and burned on Sunday!
A great day in the sunshine, and very much worth the effort. Fully expect to see some great battles between McIlroy, Spieth & Fowler as the year progresses. Very lucky to be at PHX Open next week - 16th hole should be fun! Will provide an update from there too if anybody is interested.

Snap - I like they way you travel. I would be interested in your take on the 16th at the PHX Open. I've been there myself and it was a spectacle. Fine by me in the ever staid world of professional golf.
Interesting take on Rory. When he drives like he can and has a hot putter he's virtually unbeatable. Look forward to some of those runs this year.

From one sand pit to another . . . . .
Great write up Snap, amazing what spectators notice that never makes the TV screen, isn't it. Completely agree about Fowler, great to follow, like him or not.
Will definitely be at Hartford in August, and usually add another, but messed up schedule means dates are problematic - will work something out tho'.
Enjoy PHX.

Re: European Tour 2016 - Dubai
Cheers all,
I should point on this tour is a once in a life time event, relating to birthday ending in a '0' and the fact they wanted too much cash for a Masters package!
Family go to PHX every year, and reported that due to the level of betting taking place on the caddie races @ 16, they had to ask the caddies to stop last year - shame, We shall see, will be quite a contrast to Abu Dhabi !

Snap - RE: #16 ... The "talent" in the stands is far greater than the talent on the course.
