Well, they only actually concentrate a fraction of the time they're on course, so you can't blame them. Bit like asking a tennis player to ignore noise during the serve.super_realist wrote:To be fair, it's about time golfers started being able to play through noise, They do in every other sport.

I don't mean they should have to put up with the "mash potato" sort of thing, but a camera motor should be something they ought to expect or be able to cope with.
I know it's hard, but it's something which doesn't bother people at the range or in practice, given that so many listen to music whilst practicing, so it must just be a case of accepting it can happen.

Not in snooker. As shown by that jock yesterday who got his knickers in a twist when his opponent chalked his cue on his shot.

If the noise is constant it's not too bad. But when a player settles over a shot and a hush comes over the crowd only to be interrupted at the crucial moment by inconsiderate weasel, it really is off putting. My winter league partner likes to jangle his change at just such times, and to be fair he's still alive...

I don't think it's fair at all because golf isn't like any other sport. The problem with golf is when a random click is the ONLY noise it distracts. You can try to "learn" not to let it distract you, but I doubt few really can.... IMO it has to be ALL quiet... or ALL noisy (like other sports). I think we're almost to the point that it'd be better just to let everyone, fans and media alike, fire away with their cameras at will anytime during the swing. These guys can get used to hundreds or dozens of clicks all throughout... ANYTHING except that unexpected single click.super_realist wrote:To be fair, it's about time golfers started being able to play through noise, They do in every other sport.

This is G*R*E*A*T interview with Rory.
Billy gets some ZINGS in. And Rory is a good Sport! Love the Wedding Gift at the end!
But I didn't understand the term "chatter-blind". At least that is what I think they said.

It's more the selective hearing that gets me. They won't bat an eyelid at a passing train, cheer on another hole or a bird chirping suddenly, but if one of them hears your hair growing, you're in trouble.
I'll tell you what is annoying though, I was about to tee off once and I heard a guy rustling with a bag of crisps, there is nothing more noisy than someone trying to open and eat a packet of crisps quietly.
I'd be tempted to play in earplugs if I were on tour, just to filter out those individual noises.

You are right, great watch and actually pretty funny.
I like when Rory just gives in when trying to be PC about not playing in the Olympics and just admits he jumped on the zika bandwagon.

I think you underestimate just how LOUD those clicks are in a sea of everybody trying to be quiet... If being distracted by those kinds of things were so easy to overcome, doesn't it stand to reason they all would have by now?super_realist wrote:It's more the selective hearing that gets me. Re: European Tour 2016 - Dubai
I suppose so, but sometimes I suspect people are looking for a reason. Monty certainly did and I was on the wrong end of it once, though managed to divert it.
I'm as guilty as the next man when it comes to hearing things and blaming a bad shot on it, whilst somehow ignoring the noise if I hit it good, but perhaps if we didn't expect silence, then we might deal better with the noises you hear. If we could somehow work it out of the etiquette, along with many of the other needless things we adhere to like playing in turn, we might help speed up the game. I think if I was a pro, I'd be getting my caddy to make noises during practice at unexpected times from various sources. Can't do any harm can it?
I don't know if it's a cultural thing, but when I play TOC, it's invariably the Americans who behave like they own the course and that anyone else playing is just getting in the way, perhaps because they pay the money they think no one else matters. The volume at which they speak, and the inappropriate timing of it has led me to c -word insults on more than a few occasions.

Re: European Tour 2016 - Dubai
Noise on the course; some people are just too precious about it. My course has a long driveway from the main road to the club house that winds through the back nine, passing a couple of tees on the way.
All the members (usually) respect people on a tee box close to the driveway and stop if there is someone waiting to tee off (though a lot have noisy diesel cars that are worse when in idle than when driving past. I don't stop if I'm passing a nearby green when someone is putting (though some do) but I always show willing to stop if passing a nearby tee box
I was once playing a "fun" mixed team event though and just about to tee off one of the tees close to the driveway. A car roared past just as I was teeing off. I hit a shocker but laughed it off as I couldn't blame the car - it was just a bad swing. While we were sat in the bar afterwards, the lady in our team (a past lady captain) got a text from a guy apologizing for blazing past the tee; said he hadn't seen anyone there. It was only a past (men's) captain!

Re: European Tour 2016 - Dubai
This morning, despite a heavy frost it was still full greens and there are just astroturf mats on the 5th and 7th (par 3) yellow tees. The course looks great - I've not played for more than a week - I had to stay in last Tuesday to wait for a man to come a measure up for a new window (!) - but himself played and said the course was great. We go to playing off mats on the fairways on December 5th so you've just managed to squeeze in.super_realist wrote:LP, I'm playing Leven on Sunday, how's the course looking?

How could Franny still be on the R2D Rankings after playing 8 ET tournaments only? This while Top Five has been ditched from it long ago because he was no longer able to comply with reaching the minimum threshold. Whatever that minimum might be, 12 or 13?.

I see.
However, Franny has played - outside of 2 majors and 1 WGC - only some kind of "mini-extended-Rolex" schedule, i.e. Wentworth, France, Italian & DP Dubai. That's 4!
As far as my geography goes Brasil never has been situated in Europe, but perhaps it was the case in 2016 (?)

I think so. Found this line in the link I gave you......as will the Olympic Games for the first time next year. The link was written in 2015, so it meant this year.
Edit: Sorry misunderstood you. Franny didn't play in Olympics. But France counted for two as it was the centenary.

In Dubai, A British Tourist is arrested for extra-marital sex after telling police that she was gang raped by British Nationals.

Interesting that there is so much angst on this board about the USA election, and Dubai politics and culture are completely ignored.

It's the soft bigotry of low expectations GPB. They're camel drivers, what would you expect. But they have money and nice weather so the cultural relativism becomes quite easy.
With the US it's a bit different, because we can rightfully ask: Where did it go wrong?

Rationalization and/or Excuses. There are places in USA that have similar (or better weather) than Dubai.
What's Right is Right and What's Wrong is Wrong. It doesn't matter how "common' it is.
Don't excuse it, Don't rationalize. Its astounding how much the Euro Tour is in bed with the Middle East

To be fair, on many levels Dubai is not very Middle East at all. Yes you can be thrown in jail for snogging in public or being drunk in public but to be fair, anyone going there should be aware of that. There are other practices that we would consider unacceptable that they don't and vice-Versa. The other side of that though is that is very little street crime at all, it's a very safe environment to holiday in if you're behaving yourself. You have a lot more freedom to relax in a western way in Dubai than say Saudi.

Well there is always the USGA North-East bias.
The US Open is in the Central Time zone in 2017. But there has only been one US Open in the CTZ since 1991. Chicago in 2003.
IIRC, There hasn't been a US Open in the Mountain Time Zone since Andy North in 1978.
