Utterly ridiculous contract - they have sooooooo many holes on that roster how he can justify that for a decent young pass rusher with potential to be very good is beyond me

Aren't the Giants supposed to be one of those much lauded "build through the draft" teams?? I guess those days are over.
They're a bunch of desperados now.

Some ludicrous money given out yesterday, not least by my Bucs.
I don't mind the money for Martin, he's a proven runner and the fans love him. But all that cash for JR Sweezy? It smack of the ridiculous deal Zane Beadles got from Jacksonville.

Sweezys good for a highlight reel block every so often. Pretty raw player but he has the attributes.

Moves I liked:
Jeff Allen to Houston: Brandon Brooks went elsewhere, Allen signed for less to replace him immediately.
Mitchell Schwartz to KC: Clevelands line got decimated yesterday. Mack is kinda overrated and overpaid, Schwartz is a big get.
JPP too the Giants. This is a win win for both sides.
Travis Benjamin to SD: Wanted him, great deep threat.
Moves I didn't like:
Chris Ivory to Jacksonville: Good for a beast mode run or two a season, not that effective outside of that and injury prone.
Brock Osweiler to Houston: 7 mediocre starts, dont think he's actually any better than Hoyer.
Vernon and Harrison to the Giants: Neithers a bad player, but giving their money to Malik Jackson and Robert Ayers is a much more balanced and dangerous line Imo.
Coby Fleener to the Saints: He just isnt that good.

I don't find myself looking enviously at any of the deals made so far in free agency and wishing my team had got any of the players.
Redskins have Vernon Davis in today.... I'm super-excited about that

49ers did well to sign Williams for $27.5/5 when Harrison was given $46/5 (basically the same player) and the Bears got a good deal for Trevathan.
Patriots had interest in Sanu ($32.5M/5) Matthews ($15M/3) and Forte ($12M/3) so I'm glad we didn't get them at that price.
Would like us to look at Kearse or Mariani (watched him in college, good ST player, cheaper version of Amendola) and I like Wisniewski on the OL.

So much for us avoiding bad contracts, we just offered Chris Hogan $12M/3. Would have preferred Jermaine Kearse at $13.5M/3.

The hogan contract is a bit strange, but whenever I saw him play for buffalo against us he was decent and basically screamed future Patriot.
Expecting former sodhat favourite Rod Streater to sign as well. Appears we are approaching WR like we did CB last off season - sign a bunch of vets, probably draft a couple too and let them battle in camp

Hopefully awaiting news that Colin Kaepernick has been traded to the Browns... That said I could see Chip Kelly bringing in Johnny Manziel to compete with Blaine Gabbert and possibly Jared Goff.

NFL competition committee is looking at ways of further protecting QBs. Yeah why not? Let's just make any contact at all with the QB illegal. In fact, we could just do away with offensive and defensive lines altogether and have a guy standing around chucking a ball to wide receivers that defensive backs aren't allowed to touch either.

Eric Weddle said that he wanted to join a Superbowl contender in a city that was nice for his kids to go to school in.
So he signed with the Baltimore Ravens.
Money talks.

Basically pretty much he wasn't going to 're-sign him and wanted to get something above a comp pick in return
Jones is a very good player, but he's had injury issues throughout his career effecting his play making him inconsistent. Be interested to see where he fits in the Arizona defence, being a 4-3 DE

If BB knows for sure he's not going to re-sign him then I like the move, gives us some cap space, 2nd round pick and Scar gets to kick the tyres of a former first round OL. I like Sheard to be a able to step in for Jones.Olly wrote:Basically pretty much he wasn't going to 're-sign him and wanted to get something above a comp pick in return

You saw what Vernon got, Jones is better than him for sure and there's no way we'd have been able to go anywhere near that figure
It's typical Belichick - selling a year before and being early rather than leaving it too late
What's the draft like for DE's this year?

Re: Ongoing NFL Discussion Thread V
I'd say it's a bit more even than that. Jones is a quality edge rusher, probably better than anyone the Pats could get at the bottom of the second round. And Cooper has been a big, fat bust so far.

Re: Ongoing NFL Discussion Thread V
We just saw Denver win the SB with 4 alpha dogs up front that can all kick ass. And another 2 edge rushers that came off the bench.
Doesn't really make sense to me when Brady has a shrinking window to win another ring to trade your best pass rusher who is entering his prime for a late 2nd and a crappy guard. Barring injury you're likely getting a season of high production from Jones. Nothing is guaranteed from a draft pick, and nothing is expected of Cooper.
Belichick is an all time great, but sometimes he tries for a smartest guy in the room style move.

Re: Ongoing NFL Discussion Thread V
He's doing what's kept us in contention for 15 years and got us to five straight AFC title games - always looking ahead. He's always one to let somebody go a year early than keep them a year too long.
It'll hurt us for sure, but Ninkovich/Sheard are good starters, Long could be decent backup and they must like Grissom/Flowers who they drafted last year.
Big move for the Arizona defence though - potentially pushes that unit over the top if Markus Golden continues to progress too

That would be the same Martellus Bennett who is said to be a locker room cancer.
Chicago did better out of that trade. They got rid of him and got Zach Miller who is an upgrade, at least on recent form.

I would agree about the locker room cancer thing if he was going to like Cleveland or something
Hes a seriously talented TE if he's got his head on right - which again they'll think he can do
Either way he can't be worse than Scott chandler was

Martellus Bennett = overrated
Talking of TEs, I'm loving the sound of Baylor's 400lb TE LaQuan McGowan. Would be so much fun watching a 400lb TE running over the top of a 190lb DB.

Here's this year's coaches photo from the NFL annual meeting:
Unfortunately Andy Reid and his Hawaiian shirts were among the no-shows this year. I also have to admit that even though I probably know all the names, I'd be happy if I could correctly identify more than half those people without help.
