US presidential elections
First topic message reminder :
Morning all,
So after the win in Iowa for Ted Cruz last night where do we see this going?
I'm thinking Clinton v Rubio. Lots of twists and turns still to come though.

Re: US presidential elections
It's brilliant isn't it? Like getting the most votes but not winning all the delegates.
Shame Bernie won't run as an Indy, think it would certainly ruffle a few feathers.

Re: US presidential elections
Sanders does well with kids and white men.....Clinton tends to pick up most of the rest ..Why she wins the big states.
West Virginia next will suit Sanders..
Though he can't win he can make her move to the left..
She isnt attacking him because she needs some of his loyal support.

Re: US presidential elections
In less affluent States and open primaries he picks up more women...
Why Clinton cleaned up in New England....
BUT I didn't see Bernie winning last night and I bet neither did Clinton..Great win !!.
Though it has to be said she didn't spend anymore there and he did....
By the way Cruz won't go independent and neither will Bernie....
Cruz is eyeing 2020 and running against Trump and letting Clinton in will kill that ambition...
Bernie doesn't want to let Trump in...Besides....
Bernie has started a movement in the USA....He'll want someone like a Liz Warren either on the ticket or to carry it on in 2020..
It seems the landscape of US politics is changing....
and it's a great thing..

Re: US presidential elections
Donald Trump has seen off the last of his Republican challengers, John Kasich, for the Republican nomination. He has beaten off all challengers fairly and democratically - no one was forced to vote for him. The only hope now for the Republicans not wanting Donald Trump to be the Republican candidate is through non democratic means.
I saw the following recent claim: Donald Trump made the following statement in a 1998 interview with People magazine:
"If I were to run, I'd run as a Republican. They're the dumbest group of voters in the country. They believe anything on Fox News. I could lie and they'd still eat it up. I bet my numbers would be terrific."
but it appears to be part of an on-going dirty tricks campaign against Donald Trump:

True statement there...They are as thick as poo..
He will be the candidate for sure... whether Romney and some of the establishment can get a Rick Perry type to go indy remains to be seen..
The establishment hate him more than Clinton BUT the republican media and members won't forgive them if they do put up..
Trump v Clinton......I see he's already narrowing the gap with his winning-bounce..
He's 7 behind....My guess is it will be as good as it gets..

Kasich out means he'll be VP because Ohio is a bellwether..
Liz Warren will be Clinton's VP because policy wise she's close to Bernie and Clinton needs Bernie's help..

Re: US presidential elections
I think Trump needs to develop a team that will off-set his perceived excesses. He needs to bring in people maybe from the opposite side of the Republican divide. I think he also needs a strong woman on his team to offset Hilary Clinton and the perceived notion he is "patriarchal" and clueless on "women's issues".
He has some appealing ideas but he carries all those excesses that limit his popular appeal. In fact as Trussman notes there are anti-trump groups that are almost fanatically against him and are prepared to use violence against him.
A "president Trump" will still be limited by the Senate & Congress and the Republicans fear both houses will become overwhelming Democratic in the event. Many Republicans may actually prefer Clinton rather than Trump to protect their own seats in congress (???).

Clinton will be more hampered...Both houses are GOP..
Trump is full of baloney...It would be the laziest 4 years in history..
If he's interested....It's only in the job title and not the job..
My prediction is the only thing he'll get is... Five to Ten in Ryker island
Don't mess with Aunty..
Still give him credit for pursuing the line that Sanders is being screwed by the Democrats over the system. .
Sanders fans aren't sold on Hillary and while Sanders won't run third party...His fans may get the hump being reminded ad nauseum of the rules and stay at home in November.

Latest polling has Trump pulling up to Clinton in the swing States bar Florida....Perception is everything Clinton got hammered by Bernie in WV last night and she lost Indiana before that....Losers aren't popular among voters..
Bernie must be doing something right when The Washington Post are spending all their time slagging him off..
He can't win but he's peeing on her momentum and parade..

What momentum? Clinton started off her campaign as President-elect. "It's her turn" or something. She's barely survived to clinch the Democrat nomination despite having the whole party and media machine behind her (or at least against Sanders in the media's case). How she'll fair in the coming months when the Republicans really get behind their nominee and attack her over her glaringly flip-floppingviews is up for debate, but it's not going to be a comfortable ride for sure. Could quite easily see her losing at this point, and the thought of Trump president quite frankly scares me.

Me too actually. It will be funny how powerless he will be after becoming president. Same with Hillary, who for all intents and purposes is a walking disaster. The powers around them will reign their gobs in lest they start losing all the influence the american civil service have built over the years. I'm waiting on Trump to start pitching his real presidential pitch rather than the one he has been using to price the other candidates out of the market.

Re: US presidential elections
How's my man, Trump doin'?
I'm getting more and more excited about this guy actually getting into office. The more you look into him and listen to his interviews, he is actually the most human character walking around in 'politics' or potentially in politics right now. And that is said despite acknowledging the massive ego, the childish 'me, me, me' talk, the dodgy hair do, the orange tan and the well oiled politically incorrect insults.
And that isn't saying much about the others who have come and gone in this campaign.
Trump is driving Official America nuts. They don't know what to do with him. Offending the slick, Democratic liberal talk jockeys and the Republican Fox elite in equal measure. Telling it like it is - and virtually impervious to personal insults or exposures - despite his enemies trying to pretend he's oh-so-sensitive. Nope, he isn't sensitive, he's just a guy who gets even and doesn't mush it around too much in 'ifs' and 'buts'. If he thinks you don't like him, he gets even.
All very human traits - but not done slyly behind smokescreens of public gentleness and Presidential aloofness - Donald just shoots from the hip - bang, you're dead. 'You said something untruthful about me and think you can get away with it just because I have to remain Presidentially aloof? No - I might sue you if you keep it up, sucker.'
He's bombastic, he loves himself, he's a showman - but he's a breath of fresh air in a very stale environment. Wait till he gets his interior design people into the White House. Quaint it won't be

Demographics are a big advantage to the Democrats.....Clinton has huge support from Women...Black and Hispanic communities.....Sanders has been attracting support from the students who usually don't vote...He's winning 9-1 in College areas....He's also getting Democratic voting men who aren't keen on Clinton in huge numbers..
He is only winning the predominantly white states..
Besides pick a VP from the left and she encourages Sanders fans back in the mold..
Clinton is a shoe in....Sanders is a different problem to Trump and he can't win..
The racial make up has changed as Romney found in the bellwether states....He has to make head way with Blacks. and Hispanics.(Clinton has the female vote nailed) ..and it ain't gonna happen...They are big Clinton fan groups..
She wins all the States with big ethnic communities and she will win the important ones when it matters..in Nov.

I don't think Clinton will go big on Trump's Tax situation...
She's had the..

Clinton Foundation funding scandal..
She won't release her speeches to Wall Street she got millions for...Remember she is anti- wall street..
Pr4wn should try to be more objective..

Funny thing about Trump is he thinks it is all a big game and you have a drink with your rivals after etc.....
He's basically labelled his rivals for life !!..
"Loser Mitt"..."Lyin Ted"..."Lightweight Marco" and he hammered Jeb Bush with all kinds of derogatory crap..
Now he's won he expects unity....

Genius though in the fact he hasn't spent any money..He only loaned his campaign the money...So when the GOP lump in with hundreds of millions he'll be able to get it all back..
The GOP that's funded by arm dealers..Insurance companies etc..
To think Trump's whole appeal was based around being self funded and not bought by anybody..

Rather than focusing on personalities is there a similar focusing on America. Is the current status quo for the US working? Does the US just require a steady hand to maintain everything as it is or is the US in trouble. If the US is in trouble what needs to be done and who is best placed to get it done?

The Washington Post article I posted summed it all up perfectly, with evidence, showing where support for socialism comes from and how quickly it dwindles once voters get into slightly higher earning/tax paying groups and therefore need to start bank-rolling what they asked for for themselves for others.

Or maybe they're sick of having their lives, government and entire country controlled by the super-rich.
Sneer all you like but this movement isn't going away.

That all sounds lovely. Except it doesn't explain why support falls away once people start earning above average salaries.......

Re: US presidential elections
Not everyone earns above average salaries. It wouldn't be the average otherwise.
It does, however, illustrate that far more people earn below the average salary than above it. And, as you know, the average salary in the US hasn't gone up since the 80s.
But go ahead, keep your head in that selfish little sandpit of yours and pretend like nothing is happening here.

Welcome to Venezuela, coming soon to a Corbyn/Sanders controlled-land near you!
Seriously though, there is no Corbyn or Sanders 'movement'. A sizeable minority of younger people tend to vote for economically illiterate candidates such as Sanders or Corbyn, who appeal to the heart, and because of social media they have the gift of being louder than ever before.
I mean, according to one poll I read, 25% of University students voted Green at the 2015 General Election - you're not going to tell me that will sustain itself!
Sanders is doing better than expected because he is up against Hilary Clinton. I probably can't print my true thoughts about Clinton on this forum, but suffice to say the Trump is going to beat her so easily (and Cruz and Rubio probably would have done as well).

Re: US presidential elections
You're missing the point though. People like the concept of socialism when it looks like a mixture of dragging better achievers down and pulling lower achievers up at a cost funded by others.
When those supporters of socialism start attaining levels of earnings which mean they foot more of the bill than benefit from it.........support falls away.
Point being, for all the sycophantic altruistic bullsh!t, supporters of socialism are as greedy and self-interest motivated as anyone else.
