US presidential elections
First topic message reminder :
Morning all,
So after the win in Iowa for Ted Cruz last night where do we see this going?
I'm thinking Clinton v Rubio. Lots of twists and turns still to come though.

Occasionally, you do hit the target...SecretFly wrote:TRUSSMAN66 wrote:Bill Clinton was only the third President in history to suffer impeachment proceedings..
Straightforward guy was Billy. .
In company with Nixon and racist Andy Johnson who wanted to hand the South over despite Lincoln winning the war..
Makes you wonder where Impeachment got to when George W was in charge. Did his people have 'Impeachment' kidnapped during his tenure?

Always thought Trump wasn't serious about being President and now I'm sure...
Pence is just to make sure he survives the GOP conference..No long term plan at all...
VP had to be a Lady or an Hispanic. Conservatives are in the tank..
Convention is a disaster already it's been hijacked by Anti Trump supporters already..
So much for unity...
Hilary survived the FBI investigation and that was probably the only thing that could stop her..

Given that his wife has given Michelle Obama's speech (in her raw Texan, 100% American-Pie drawl ) is Trump himself now set to give Kennedy's Ich Bin Ein Berliner speech?

Re: US presidential elections
I have no problem with Trump's wife I imagine it was a daunting experience and I thought she coped well..Old fashioned in the way that I like Wives, Husbands and kids left out of it...
She's had nude pictures splashed all over the Internet. ..Been rubbished in 90 percent of the media and remained dignified throughout....
As for the plagiarism...Find me a speech that isn't a reworked copy of a famous speech...Kennedy's inauguration speech has been plagiarised more times than I have had hot dinners..

Re: US presidential elections
I wouldn't blame the wife - she prepared and obediently read what was on the autocue (always a bad mistake to make)
- I'd blame the lazy speechwriters. If they have to go researching previous speeches and taking clumps out of them, then they're just pretenders with little speech writing skills. They're also quite dumb, thinking they could get it past a Google search - as I'm almost certain that's how the similarities were uncovered in the first place.

Re: US presidential elections
Like so many of the Trump gaffs the main effect seems to be to keep him in the public eye. However laughable the speech was (and the 'explanation' is eye-watering) it certainly has helped to keep that profile high.
Sometimes you have to wonder if its accidental on purpose.

To be fair, it was a pretty bland, clichéd 'American Dream' section that has probably shown up much the same in countless political speeches over the years.Pr4wn wrote:Oh come on Truss, it was pretty much word-for-word.

Trump was a big outsider when he entered the GOP race..He spent 51 million compared to the 300 million Cruz...Rubio and Bush spent..add to that the money the Super pacs chucked at him and he still came out on top..
Sure he aimed at the lowest base of GOP supporter but the idea is to win...
I think he's dead because he's alienated swingers but I doubt he wanted the Presidency anyway..
The whole thing in my opinion was an F.U to MSNBC who have been calling him a fraud who didn't have the balls to run...for years..
As we know Trump is like a little boy when criticism is chucked his way..

The glossy gals and airbrushed guys................
This is what's going to kill off Trump if he keeps it up. Republicans are more grit, realism (their version of it anyway) and dust folks. The amount of 'plastic' on display at this convention - in terms of faces, smiles and schmaltz - is going to damage him if he allows it to get too much of a foothold into the next months.
Cut the gushing crap, Donald. Back to non-PC straight talking that makes critics wince - or even I'll be back to bloody Hilary

Trump is colourful. But I like him on his own, using his unique way with the English language to annoy everyone - from blacks, to Mexicans, to whites, to radicals, to conservatives, to Democrats to Republicans. That's the colour.
The glossy ultra-false gush'n'golly-gee twee 'Love him' and puke inducing schmlatz at the convention................. nah. Keep your family away from the cameras Trump or you'll lose.
And to think, this Hollywood Disney stuff is the guff that's meant to 'endear' him to the general public and make him more loveable??
The world really is in a dangerous place if most Americans need such crass displays of false-emotion to feel comfortable with a candidate. I blame Bambi!

It is?
Must write a nice letter to them straight away:
Dear Sir/Madam,
To whom it may concern and I hope I'm not showing a bias when I say pre-congratulations Donald - but I hear yis have something called a 'handout' and I'd be willing to discuss with you which you might have in mind for us.
I'd like the financial version but, of course, knowing that you have to keep to your election promises, I fully respect the possibility that it might be a Tomahawk cruise missile version instead. Please allow me to live if it's the latter as I would have voted for you and Brexit had I the opportunity to do so.
Sincerely yours, Fly.

America was also great in the 50's. Came out of the 2nd world war with a massive (undamaged) industrial base (in part paid for by us and the ruskies) when the rest of the world was wrecked. They managed the swords to ploughshares thing very well.

Why so? Trump likes sincere people. That's why he hates Hillary and his wife's speech writers.

Re: US presidential elections
America was always greatest when it listened to the beat of its heart. The centre - the now forgotten places and people of the prairies, the Rockies and the semi-deserts. It is ALL image when the truth of influence and greatness is the topic - and in IMAGE, that's where America has lost its way completely.
Its identity now is too fixated on portions of that East and West coast, where all the plastic people go to become famous in anything that's going - finance, business, entertainment, politics. Neither coast speaks for the Heartland because both coasts now seem to be embarrassed by the genuine weird, whacky and wonderful folks that live there.
You only have to look at Hollywood output, always a good indicator of what America is feeling about itself, and you see virtually everything based on cities and urban living - stocked up with pseudo-liberal ideals and pretensions in order to collect the Politically Correct Endorsement money to keep the machine going.
I often look at America today, and I contemplate the sheer size of it and the diversity of its geography and peoples. Such a big canvas to play with in terms of projecting an identity to the world like it was once so good at. But what do we get as American culture in comedy, in movies, in current affairs, in music? Raw, urban culture; soulless, plastic, hard, self-centred, ambitious, loud, hyper-active, bitchy, shallow, glitter and teeth....
Hollywood and media in general reflect what America thinks of itself and how other people then view it. Right now, it's portraying itself as a callous place where most people shout "F**k You!" when greeting each other in the morning.
I still love the place - maybe because I grew up watching stuff from the 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s. A golden Age for America. However, that feeling in the world's younger generation isn't really there, despite infinitely more American 'culture' now alive 24 hours a day online.
I think America does have to discover the heart of its Nation again, and there is nothing Trumpy poetic in the idea. It's a real requirement now because there are real tensions emerging in the whole concept of a 'united' states of America. It does have to re-learn what its best selling points were in the last century and it first needs to sell those principles to the Americans themselves. It was always Face and Image of course, even in that Golden age, because the dark and real political stuff happened all though the 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s too - and little of it was pretty. But somehow, the Face still felt more noble then than the Face of today's America.
Trump actually has a real shot at finding a spark that catches the imagination. I don't think yet another ordinary career politician, in the guise of Hillary Clinton, is the answer this time.

There are tens of millions of underpaid workers in the US and patience is wearing more thin than ever. Sanders' view is becoming increasingly mainstream, just look at the surge in popularity since he started. And it's not just young people, either. You think he's won all of these states just through only young people voting for him?
Not only young people (point of reference: young people in this case being under thirty), but the majority of his voters would be from that demographic.
Sanders' view - doubling the minimum wage in four years - will simply lead to a great number of small and medium-sized businesses laying multitudes of people off because they wouldn't be able to afford the increase.
Surely anyone can see that?
I mean the minimum wage was recently increased in this country by a tiny fraction of what Sanders is proposing, and there were widespread fears of thousands of job losses (still waiting for the exact figures, though).
https://fee.org/articles/seattles-minimum-wage-hike-didnt-help-low-wage-workers/
And the evidence from Seattle shows this.
“The major conclusion one should draw from this analysis is that the Seattle Minimum Wage Ordinance worked as intended by raising the hourly wage rate of low-wage workers, yet the unintended, negative side effects on hours and employment muted the impact on labor earnings.”

And the trend with Duty continues:
* Backs parties and individuals quotable with racist statements and comments
Yet he's tolerant of every ethnic minority, he says.
Thankfully Hilary can now return to the more central ground (after being dragged to the left by Sanders and those American idiots who actually believed what he was saying was actionable) and will flatten Trump in the process.

My dad, for example, he's not as cosmopolitan or as educated as me and it can be embarrassing you know. He doesn't understand all the new trendy words - like he'll say "poofs" instead of "gays", "birds" instead of "women", "darkies" instead of "coloureds".

The libertarian candidate is polling at 9 percent which is amazing for a third party candidate...They usually struggle to get 1 percent...
Highlights how poor the two main candidates are...
If he can reach 15 percent he gets a place at the three debates...and then anything can happen...Perot got a big share of the vote in 92 unfortunately for him it was spread out which stopped him winning States..
At the moment the libertarian is more of a problem for Trump but a lot of Clinton's support is soft..
Don't like libertarians.....Going back to survival of the fittest is not the kind of society I want in present day America or anywhere else. .
We've moved on.
Highlights how poor the two main candidates are...

I don't think it's what libertarians want, either.

Re: US presidential elections
Trump is 9 points down on average in the RCP.........No candidate in the history of White house polling has ever won the White house from that position at this stage..
Clinton and her pacs have so far spent $104 million on TV ads............In key states..
Trump has spent $12 million.............
Bit of a joke really..........If this guy wants to win he's got a funny way of showing it..

Re: US presidential elections
The Dallas Morning News have come out for Clinton.....First Democratic endorsement since FDR 72 years ago....
Trump had been having a good few days.....Gone from 8 points to 4 points down in the poll of polls....
1 point up in the CNN poll....
Two weeks till the first debate......Should be a hoot..

That Dallas paper must be pretty against Trump to endorse Clinton?
The first debate should be very interesting; will definitely be keeping an eye on it.
