First topic message reminder :

On this day in 2009 Joe Calzaghe announced his retirement with a record of 46 (32)-0-0, as a two weight unbeaten World Champion.

What was your take on Joe Calzaghe?

Well they weren't going to outwork him were they, silly argument
Silly argument? Me with the silly argument or fighters not wanting to come to the UK because they thought they'd have to stop Calzaghe to get the win?

Bit of both if I'm being honest. Who got stiffed on the cards against JC...arguably Robin Reid (although I don't agree)...an Englishman. To beat Calzaghe you were going to have to beat him on workrate and there weren't too many around who even came close

Robin Reid said he thought he hadn't done enough - immediately after the fight - but I cant find the fight report to confirm it.

If I was fighter in the US or anywhere else I'd think twice about travelling abroad to fight Calzaghe in his hometown or home country. Just the same as fighters probably thought the same about fighting Ottke in Germany. It's something I'd only do if it was my only option for a title shot or a decent payday.

You do know you can insist on a U.S Referee and Judges?

You can also go knock the f*cking guy out and take the issue out of the judges hands

So there should never have been any problems with any fighter going to Germany and fighting Ottke then?

Nope - except that the germans refused to reach an accommodation (witness the guy ringing the bell halfway through the round) whereas frank signed up many only for them to fall through (hopkins withdrawing to fight a lesser fighter for a lesser boost to his rep and less money) Glen Johnson three times ( Calzaghe's hand) etc. It just wasn't an issue.

The tank goes big style at middle age..

Younger Hopkins would beat younger Joe.....in my opinion.....

Think he rode the Warren bus too long..............Hatton got off it to fight the best....

But he still had a top notch career....

Hatton leaving Warren meant very little risk for Hatton.

Hatton had the fan base to fill stadiums, Joe had the fans base to fill sports halls.

As boxing fans I think we are in agreement about Joe's standing, one of Britain's best but not quite in that ATG level. Just feel the disagreement is on what he could have done to change this, without the fan base he was stuck to Warren until after the Lacey fight as that fight actually made him the star.

I'm definitely not knocking Joe as a fighter. He was one of those rare fighters who could let everything go and keep going round after round. He had
balls, a good chin, could really whack before his hands went and was as game as a rooster.

I remember Hopkins trying that prison stare on him and Joe just laughing like a maniac - he was one of the few who had the jump on Hopkins pre-fight. You couldn't intimidate Calzaghe.

Ha ha, I remember really enjoying the build up, seeing Hopkins try (and fail) to rattle Joe.

Bernard: I'd never let a white boy beat me
Joe: Yeah, me either.

B: I'm from G Block! G block.
J: I don't even know what that means. (Or words to that affect)
