Them becoming the no.1 Test side would round up a brilliant few years for England.
Re: England vs Sri Lanka 2nd test debate
Yes but i cant see it happening soon to be honest. India and South Africa are still better sides but England are making a habit of winning

Re: England vs Sri Lanka 2nd test debate
Where this England side differs from previous sides is that they have players who are not afraid to take on a challenge. In days gone by, England teams were not mentally strong but now whenever a player (or 2) fail, there is always one or two others that take up the challenge.

What like the last time they played Sri Lanka at Lords and Flintoff ended up bowling 50+ overs in the last Innings to taking an incredible 2 wickets for 1hundredandalot?
SL batted over 2 days to save a game following on in that test. Think England had another fast bowler (Mahmood?) that game too.
Sometimes sides dont collapse for under 100 two tests in a row whoever they are facing.
Flintoff is a bt of a romantic myth. His pretty average record is forgiven because he "won matches". England have won more tests since he retired. Possibly a coincidence, but now they have 6 proper batsmen and 4 bowlers who can bowl long spells all day if required and not have to have surgery the next day.
Sri Lanka of course now have the ultimate "all rounder", Maharoof. Lets not get too carried away in the search for the next Botham lest England get one of those (again). Unfortunatly Chuck Norris isnt England qualified.

Re: England vs Sri Lanka 2nd test debate
calling Maharoof an all-rounder is a serious insult. can't bat, can't ball, can't field. in a way, the ultimate all-rounder. Thisara Parera can at least give the ball a good thumping and bowl ok. his ODI performances hasn't been too bad either. Lanka's better of playing either him, or apropper batter Chandimal? at 6, and move Prasanna down.

Yes my ultimate all rounder was a bit sarcastic.
Its ludicrous to persist with a guy whos averaging under 20 with the bat at 7 on the grounds he bowls worse than Trott. Sri Lanka's proper batsmen offer some reasonable back upbowling options if they really dont trust their front 4. Picking a guy who cant bowl effectivly in tests isnt going to balance the side, and he does nothing to help the batting in the tail. Englands batting is stronger at 9 than Sri Lanka is at 7, thats ridiculous.
Its not even like he hasnt had a chance to prove himslef, hes played quite a few tests now surely. I dont care what his ODI and County stats are, hes clearly out of his depth at test level, at least the OAP Collingwood who limped around the last year was stll a good fielder and had some credit in his tank from prevous peformances. This guy is a disgrace, he should be playing for Australia or something.

Re: England vs Sri Lanka 2nd test debate
Maharoof is a decent ODI all rounder. Not a Test standard all rounder.
Chandimal should've played at Cardiff. Samaraweera has been seriously village.
Lankans need to play Randiv plus Herath as well.

That's a good point, and one I've been making for about the last 3 years - with the exception of Swann as the only effective spinner, we've relied on all the members of the team at one time or another to produce for us. The ultimate example was when Broad made his ton in partnership with Trott - took us from a position where it looked like we'd be out cheaply to establishing a very competetive total - this first innings gave another example, with Prior and the lower order really contributing with the bat. It's a good habit to have got into.

I missed the end of this one. Busy busy.
I think a draw was a fair result. Great contest on cracking test pitch.

Re: England vs Sri Lanka 2nd test debate
Agree it was a fair result. No so much about the wicket though...a little too batsman friendly IMHO.
That said, when the bowlers of both teams got their deliveries right, they did cause problems. I suppose it was more to do with the mostly below-par quality of bowling that led to the run-fest.
Think I stopped watching with a couple of hours to go, when Sri Lanka still only had 3 wickets down.

Re: England vs Sri Lanka 2nd test debate
Dont forget that nearly a dyas worth of overs were lost to rain and bad light. Had this been a dry test it probably wouldve been a result even with some mediocre bowling at times.
It wasnt excessivley batsman friendly, and it makes a change form last summer when half the tests matches were over by the fourth day.
