Reminds me of when I first heard the name Martin Johnson back in my days as a junior reporter. The King Country crowd were in town and swore they had this beanpole kid from England who was going to be even better than Colin Meads. At the time this seems totally bizarre to me. New Zealanders tend to talk about 'Pinetree' Meads in the same revered tones as Argentina football fans talk about Maradona. He's even got his own fan club (though I'm not sure if there's a Church of Pinetree yet, whereas there is a Church of Maradona). So to hear not just Kiwis but King Country Kiwis talking about a player who was going to be better than Colin Meads defied belief - especially when he was an Englishman!

Barely 7 or 8 years later Martin Johnson led England to the Northern Hemisphere's only World Cup title.

Hey, I just found out he has a Welsh granny, who once stopped off at a scottish service station, with her best friend who was Irish!
