The Dew Drop Inn
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the Tommy Bowe photo on the bar. That's a banning offence
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

Asbo - do you think that Edinburgh can qualify. They clearly aren't favourites but I think this could be their year.

Staggy, honestly, no, I don't - major weaknesses in the second row; however, if they adopt a playing style tat is reminiscent of their home fixture against Saints in this year's Heino, then anything is possible - but it's under Bradley, so I'm not getting my hopes up

Oh god I forgot about that. Still though stranger things have happened. They won't get a better chance again. It has no easy team but no game that is unwinnable.

Expect is a strong word Notch no matter how far we've come. Bonus points against the italians are a must. If we win at home and avoid giving away any losing bonus points in the process we might have a chance.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn
Hey guys
This is more for the Irish contingent on here but any suggestions are welcome. The pub i work in is trying to become more rugby orientated. Already we run bus trips to Ravenhill and show most games with Irish teams in the Heineken or ML but we want to branch out a bit and really appeal to a market that isnt particularly catered for up in Belfast.
We are toying with ideas and one was to create a kind of supporters club (not exclusively for Ulster) but more for Irish rugby and all the provinces. Incentives would be a card for cheaper drink, t-shirts made and we would branch out and try and make some away games in the ML (particularly to the other provinces).
Obviously Ireland games and most internationals will be shown. Just curious as to what you guys look for in your usual rugby boozer. Is there any mileage in this idea? We are also looking at any potential contacts in the other provinces, maybe work with other bars in Limerick/Dublin etc regarding trips. Any input is welcome. Im not expecting too much back but if there is i will create a separate thread.
Cheers lads

Bradley I reckon will be there to pick the team.... the players will always opt to try and play the game type AR has instilled in them. The 2nd row is a major concern but I'm still confident that Edinburgh will turn some heads this season.
Last season was disasterous, I don't think anyone can argue with that. But let's face it, It's impossible for Bradley to do worse than Rob "form player dropper" Moffat!

If you want it to be a real rugby pub, then make sure that one TV is always reserved for rugby when requested no matter how big a football match is that's on at the same time.
I think some pubs in Limerick would definitely be willing to be part of a link up. Just run it through the Supporters Club though.

We already do that in the sense that Heineken Cup is prioritised over Football. Of course part of the idea is that there will be an area reserved for the rugby.

Thats fine Stag - we have a "foe" option on the profile page which should block out posts by people selected as foes. We are having problems with over sensitive types on other sections, so we have used a testing account and made you a foe of it.
However, the account could still see your post, meaning it doesnt work!
Thanks for doing that.

I do like the idea of there being a supporters club thing with a card that gets a free pint or something along those lines. Do you do buses to Irish matches?

Agree Munsty, they will be tougher to beat at home this year than they were last.
Have to say I am pretty happy with that draw. Our pool is very evenly matched, but there is no team that I think we cannot beat, either home or away. We need to make the quarter finals this season to stand any chance of retaining our tier 2 status next year. Really looking forward to this now, hopefully will make it to Edinburgh and Cardiff for the away games!

It is a beer house really at the minute. Lots of old sporting gear on the walls. We have a signed ulster jersey but by the time the Magners starts we will have all the provinces and an Ireland one up (i am in the process of trying to get them signed). The card idea was pay a nominal fee (like £10)to join the club and get pints for £3 when the rugby isnt on and £2.50 when it is. Its still in it infancy of course. I would love to do something during the world cup but unfortunately it is well nigh impossible with the timings.
No Ireland games as yet but we are thinking of having a couple of draws throughout the season to give away things like that.

Well I think like As said, make it a rugby pub, not just an Ulster rugby pub. I think that way you'll bring in a larger and more diverse crowd.
Also, make it friendly for families for afternoon kick offs.

I say it was Stag, but the extra two hours would have made a massive difference.
Question for the pub. What's the difference between interest and enjoyment in your own opinion?

VERY good question. My gut reaction is that enjoyment is much more emotive.

Stag you are a gentleman. Thanks for the mail. Are we foes? i have no idea
Its difficult getting the interest for the breakfasts but that is doable. The only real game i think we would get folks in for is Ireland v Aus and a potential QF/SF/ wishful thinking???? I worked in a bar that did a testimonial breakfast thing for Andy Ward during the Lions tour in 2005. It was a massive logistical operation. My boss has already said we should do all nighters for the Ireland games lol. He is actually a Munster fan though so there is good banter.

THe bar is the Taphouse in Lower Crescent just off Botanic. I will keep you posted with developments but we will certainly be showing rugby / organising trips to Ravenhill at the very least this year.

Are the two mutually exclusive?
Also, another one for the former English students and soon to be (Stag), what's the difference between allow and permit?

I'm sure there'd be interest in all of Irelands games? Are they on ITV again this time? I can barely remember the schedule for the 2005 Lions. Does anyone know what the rough schedule will be? I presume a lot of the group games will be midweek?

Thats all any pub is going to get. Start off promoting what you can and show that the idea of a rugby pub is viable to your staff and customers. Nobody wants an empty pub for Ulster v Edinburgh on a Friday night nor Ireland v Russia at 7am.
Start of by targetting events that show how much fun it is to be a part of this. Remember Supply and Demand

I'm going on a similar track to LP. I have an interest in the cricket but I wouldn't say I enjoy watching it.
Stand you should take advantage of the student population during the RWC. If I get into a postgraduate course for September I'd love to hit a bar or somewhere around Queens for a fry and rugby match before class. I am willing to forgo a commission on this idea, if you throw an extra bit of taddie bread onto mine for free.

Munster the allow/permit thing I always thought was about being kind of vague and specific. Permit is a more regulated one.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn
No, they're not mutually exclusive. If someone was asked to name their interests, some would just be things he's interested in and some would be things he enjoyed. But they'd all be his interests.
Allow and permit are synonyms, aren't they?
