Cricket Quiz Question for Today
First topic message reminder :
In two parts -
* Which former England captain celebrates his 53rd birthday today?; and
* the harder and more obscure part, what is the connection between his birth date and a certain Test number he reached?

Yorkshire, or maybe Durham?
Surrey probably get a fair bit credit in the bank for Stewart, Thorpe and Butcher although it was all a while ago now. Also, most of that credit was used up by Salisbury being selected!

Re: Cricket Quiz Question for Today
It's hardly Surrey's fault Salisbury kept getting selected though . Didn't he end up averaging 76 or something? Those were the days.
To VTR I'd imagine Yorkshire. Of the current bunch you have Root Bairstow then Ballance Lyth Plunkett Rashid. Previous players include Vaughan and a whole host of pace bowlers (Hoggard, Bresnan, Gough, etc.).

Can't really argue with some of those Yorkshire names
Durham isn't bad though a bit light on batting I guess: Collingwood, Stokes, Harmison, Wood, Onions

Ten batsmen have scored 10% of their test runs with sixes, who are they? (Minimum 1000 runs)

Hammer - I was wondering about Gilchrist which might fit your clue if he's regarded firstly as a keeper. Still bl**dy harsh though if he's not also a recognised batsman!

That doesn't surprise me. I am a little surprised there are ten ! Will need some thought for the other eight...
Is Darren Sammy one ?

Sammy is one, four of them are quite obvious.

Re: Cricket Quiz Question for Today
Southee I'd expect to be one.
Sehwag I'm not sure was a prolific six hitter.
Dhoni I'd expect to be up there.
Going on "not a bastman" theme, Brett Lee? Not sure he reached 1000 runs, but he certainly hit a fair few sixes. Shane Warne also hit plenty, he could be another.
Flintoff?

I wondered about Warne...not sure he hit that many sixes though. Agree Southee must be one.
Waiting on hammersmith's next update. And are we to understand that there is one top order bat yet unidentified ? Or was McCullum the one ?

Re: Cricket Quiz Question for Today
Cairns and Southee are both in it, the top order batsmen was an international team mate of the former, wasn't a renowned quick scorer.

Nope, the other three (I miscounted) are all bowlers with over 400 wickets.

Might have messed up the answer a bit; Khan, Steyn, Harbhajan Singh and Craig McMillan are the others.

I guess Bhaji is the biggest surprise there, also Khan to some extent as he wasnt that much of a hitter in limited overs but had a role of happy slapping down the order in tests.

Re: Cricket Quiz Question for Today
Time to resurrect this one, in light of a fun recent stat. It involves Surrey and England's Gareth Batty, who recently earned a Test recall after missing 142 Tests since his last appearance, unsurprisingly a record.
So, can you tell me who holds the record for most ODIs played by his country between appearances?
For some bonus points:
who held the previous record for Tests? and who holds the current record for T20s?

- Hint:
- He had a very good reason for not playing ODIs for such a long period.

Re: Cricket Quiz Question for Today
Its not something silly like Ed Joyce is it.
I thought South African then realised that their country wouldnt have played an ODIs, so although they may hold some records for longest gaps between games it wont be the most games without a cap.

Re: Cricket Quiz Question for Today
Indians play such a ridiculous number of ODIs its likely to be one of them, I just cant think of a "good reason"
Marlon Samuels got banned for a while didnt he, but I cant believe theres not been cricketers with longer breaks for playing reasons than that .
Swann had a long gap between caps.
Adam Voges for T20s?

Was it the double international for New Zealand. Who played rugby - the absence was because of the overlap of the cricket and rugby seasons so he picked rugby. Geoff Wilson?

I've heard to T20 one, so won't answer that - it isn't Surrey related though!

Correct
(though it's spelt Jeff Wilson I think). Played cricket for NZ in early 90's then switched to rugby, became a highly successful NZ international, so that put paid to his cricketing days. Then switched back to cricket, and was picked for some ODIs in 2003-2004, gap of over 270 games!
VTR is correct about Bicknell (110 Tests between his last Test at the Oval in 2002 I think and his previous appearance).
The T20 one is English, but non Surrey related
