Francis Roig - "Nadal competes to be the GOAT"
Francis Roig (Nadal's second coach) was stating what should be the obvious.
Look at Federer. These guys play to be the best in the history, Nadal too. Let us not kid ourselves: Monte Carlo is a big title, but the goal is to win more Grand Slam titles. What makes you think that Nadal will not win Roland Garros and his 15th?
Roig also mentioned that Nadal once said to him "If I have to undergo surgery, I will do it. And if is needed I will play until I am 32 or 33."

Of course, all the big 3 are now competing to be the GOAT.
Hypothetical question - if (big if) Novak did the CYGS this year would people regard him as the GOAT?

No, unless he wins CYGS every year till 2020, and even than he would be the GOAT of Monaco.

Three letters between Francis Roig and Francis Roid.
It is important to get the spelling correct as we wouldn't want to create an insinuating incident.
PS with regard to GOAT that is so outdated and Newtonian in conception. Nowadays it would be conceived as GOAST - the greatest of all space-time. Remember that time mixes with space when jumping into different inertial frames or passing through a gravitational field.

We need the Architect to come up with a conceptual TARDIS in which all players can be GOATs in different time dimensions, so this debate can be avoided/ended once and for all.

Re: Francis Roig - "Nadal competes to be the GOAT"
Interesting though a hypothetical, were Djokovic win the Grand Slam in 2016.
Would put him on 14 Majors, so tied with Pete & Rafa, 3 behind Roger BUT winning the
Grand Slam has got to be worth more than just the 4 majors adding to the overall tally - but HOW MUCH?
Three major singles titles, is a HOF career for anyone whatever their "spread" regards to events (3 of same major, 2 of one, 1 of another, or 3 different ones, etc.,) or timing (years over which won, across 2, 3, or more seasons).
Personally, not prepared to give an answer on that one - it's tough - because as many people point out - a player's career really need to be finished to put it into a singular historical perspective; and then the other players around that person's Era, finished as well, for the [u]complete historical perspective.
Let's wait and see how it goes - I think it could just as easily go 2 Majors in 2016 for Djoker, and 2 other players taking the others; or all 4, or only the Aussie to date. Anyone who's followed the game over a certain period of time, know what's been said by many a HOF player, commentator, legend... - it needs a little luck, and for "things to go your way" to win a Major regardless.
Nice if it continues to "heat up" in the men's game - with Fed, Rafa, Andy and then a few "2nd tier" players - playing their best games at big moments - makes it much more interesting than if the "expected" domination continues.
Onwards to RG.....
