SURREY VS DURHAM SPECSAVERS COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
First topic message reminder :
SURREY HAVE NAMED A THIRTEEN MAN SQUAD FOR THE SPECSAVERS COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH AGAINST DURHAM STARTING AT THE KIA OVAL ON SUNDAY.
Mark Footitt is unavailable for selection and will have an MRI scan for a suspected side strain that he suffered in the recent game against Somerset.
Jade Dernbach and Stuart Meaker are still on the treatment table and there is still no place in the squad for James Burke.
The Surrey squad to play Durham in the Specsavers County Championship at the Kia Oval on Sunday May 1st, Monday May 2nd, Tuesday May 3rd and Wednesday May 4th:
Gareth Batty (capt)
Zafar Ansari
Rory Burns
Tom Curran
Steven Davies
Matthew Dunn
Ben Foakes
Arun Harinath
Mathew Pillans
Ravi Rampaul
Jason Roy
Kumar Sangakkara
Gary Wilson
get the feeling davies will get one more chance so wilson and pillans to miss out imo.
over to you chaps

Hopefully Foakes can push on, but he's not really the scoring quickly alongside the tail type. He seemed more suited to the no. 4 position last year.
Well if he's playing as a specialist batsman...

Hi JimBob - although it's gone pretty much under the radar, you're right to highlight Tom's batting. Given he's at number 8, it's starting to look a bit of a concern. In 5 of his 6 first class innings this season (includes one knock against Loughborough MCCU), he's failed to reach double figures.
I'm not slating the guy - after all, his main job is to bowl. However, imo number 8 is an important position and should be a bridge between the batters and the tail, not the beginning of the tail.

Very good first hour for Surrey. 422/8 off 110. Max batting points and restricting Durham to 2 bowling points.

Olly and all - First six of the innings. Doubt it will be the last of the game. Martin Emerson (Radio Newcastle) on commentary saying how short the boundary that side (Gas Holder) is.

457 all out. Happily take that. Fine team effort with 9 of the dismissed batsmen getting into double figures. Sets us up for a chance of the win and at worst a draw. Would need to something remarkably stupid to lose from here.

Yes, very useful runs added this morning by Surrey, consolidating their good start from yesterday. Not sure that we'll get a full day's play as rain is moving in from the west but hopefully we'll keep going until well into the third session.

Dunn very expensive so far. Anyone watching/listening able to shed any light on whether he's unlucky or just bowling poorly?

Gareth Batty has just walked over to the OCS and said (sarcasm) "For everyone offering their advice, thanks very much, really appreciated"

Not there today and haven't listened to the commentary since the end of our innings. Can't therefore say how Dunn is bowling today but, whilst I like him and his pace, he does tend to suffer from inconsistency.
Batty would be better off keeping his comments to the team.

The difference that two quick wickets can make to a scorecard can work both ways it seems

As James suggests - scoreboard suddenly looks a lot healthier from a Surrey perspective.

Rain cuts short the 2nd day, Durham finish on 156-2
Again you'd just say we're shading it but nothing definitive - the draw looking most likely at this stage

Olly - agree with that although a couple of early morning wickets would give us a new lease of life.
PS You changed your name by deed poll?

Interesting note about the pitch - a good toss to win then? Hopefully we can go onto 400+ tomorrow and give Zaf/Batty something to bowl with
Stokes with a short boundary worries me though!!
Olly and all - from Andrew Miller's cricinfo report of day two: ''On a curious looking wicket which has been shaved at both ends in a bid to encourage some turn, Surrey's spinners will expect to come into their own in the second half of the game ...''.
PS Dolphin to blame, huh?! Can't get away from West Ham fans here!

263 - 3 At last, a wicket. (Batty's second). Could do with a few more, soonish, if we are to take full bowling points.

Re: SURREY VS DURHAM SPECSAVERS COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
Turns out missing three of your five best seamers is quite a hinderance (Footitt, Curran S and Ravioli)
Appears this may have been a step too far for Young Philans at this stage
Burke can feel very hard done by imo

Re: SURREY VS DURHAM SPECSAVERS COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
I'd make it actually 3 of our 4 best seamers (TC the only one playing).
That said, very disappointing from the two guys to come in, and a shame that Tom Curran has seemed to struggle a bit with the step up to Division 1 this year. I'm sure he'll come good in time, but the attack looks a little toothless until he gets there.
Does anyone know when Meaker is expected to be back?

Re: SURREY VS DURHAM SPECSAVERS COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
Yeah Jimbob, the website certainly can be quite obtuse for certain things!
Out of interest, what does everyone think of Meaker? He bowled exceptionally well a few years ago and looked like the real deal but since then he's always seemed to be injured or just coming back from injury - that is until last season, when he was stuck in the seconds all year.

Re: SURREY VS DURHAM SPECSAVERS COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
Meaker seems to me to be a bit of a lost cause at this point, but then I never really saw him at his peak so cannot comment on him really
And yes jimbob the club are very mum on most issues - I love the coverage church provides and I'm sure it's not his fault but he really doesn't ask good Q's in his post day/match interviews
