Ilkay's never played over 28 league games in a season, his entire career. Just feels like we've been here before, City's best players out injured & missing significant portions of a season. No doubting the ability though.

Extremely talented player but it doesn't surprise me that Dortmund aren't putting a fight to retain him anymore like they have previous summers. The emergence of Weigl and Pulisic should lessen the blow of losing him.

Re: Summer Transfer Thread 16/17
Bit of a risk for a City side as well that's increasingly struggling with its main players suffering injuries (Aguero, Kompany and Silva) to go out and buy 2 players that are injured, one a serial injury, one a particularly bad injury.

I suppose they will think of depth and just adding talent on top. If Pep is looking for style of play and system rather than star names (although of course he gets the best that suit him) then he will be comfortable with rotation in players he trusts.

Going to be interesting for pep, he has had both incredible individuals and brilliant squads at both Bayern and barca. All eyes on him to see if he can turn around city's fortunes.

They could probably do worse than 2 PL wins in the last 5 years and a CL SF last year tbf.

City have a weird squad though. Even Silva is 30 now, gives the Sterling and De Bruyne moves greater context.
In midfield Yaya stopped caring years ago, Fernandinho is 31 and Fernando is crap. Wouldn't surprise me if they made Pogba the most expensive PL buy ever.

Aging squad/star players though and managed 4th this year.
Got a good draw in the cl to make the semis (for once).
Just different to inheriting an amazing team, a real chance for him to silence the doubters.

Re: Summer Transfer Thread 16/17
to be honest, their squad is still probably the best in the league though or top 2? Manuel just had a mare in the league motivating them & they had injuries. Its not like hes taking on a bad side is pep, yes it needs tweaking, but essentially hes still going to have at his disposal a £45m sterling, £50m+ de bruyne, silva & the best forward in the league, in aguero. still inheriting a quality side + then we're talking about signing laporte, gundogan & then possibly breaking the transfer record for a pogba type...........does that silence doubters? not for me. just another chapter of the pep having it easy & blowing a load of money, the only difference is that the PL is the most competitive league he would of faced

Mkhitaryan refused contract extension at Dortmund, current one expires next summer and player currently looking at options. Was voted Players Player of the Season in the Bundesliga.

Don't think city's squad is all that. 1 good defender, no decent cms under 30. Injury prone attackers.
Still think it's a decent challenge for him, compared to the sides he inherited before.

Re: Summer Transfer Thread 16/17
Fernandinho, Silva, Aguero, De Bruyne, Sterling, Kompany, Hart. I think that's a joy for any manager to inherit. Otamendi will improve for the year here, Sagna is solid, Clichy is solid.
They need a centre back, another midfielder for sure. Then the rest is where he wants to upgrade and where he adds depth to cover the fitness issues. He's got an easier job there than at any other English side I reckon

Possibly but the pl isn't awash wit talent at the minute.
De bruyne is a good player but silva, aguero, kompany are the spine of the side and are always injured.

Re: Summer Transfer Thread 16/17
Pep should be trying to figure out what the hell is causing Kompany to break down every five minutes. Even Sturridge thinks the man is a crock. City should look at tailoring a pre-season from Kompany as he's a vital part of that team but if they can't sort him out they need to get rid sooner rather than later if they want to maintain any title ambitions.

Understand that Arsenal have triggered the release clause in Jamie Vardy's contract. Leicester still determined to keep hold of him.

Vardy leaving was quite predictable but I really don't think he's good enough for Arsenal.

Re: Summer Transfer Thread 16/17
As last night proved, he's only effective playing counter attacking football, would not suit Arsenal at all. 90% of teams concede possession & sit back, effectively would nullify his threat. Don't blame him for going though, massive pay day, but he'll just fade into the background at that club.

At 20m for a striker who just scored 24 league goals you can't really complain. But is he really good enough to upgrade Arsenal

Unless they're changing the way they play he just doesn't fit their style at all - the way you defend Arsenal is sit deep, which is also how you nullify Vardy

Really surprised by the Vardy transfer news. I didn't expect a team like Arsenal to go in for Vardy. He's had a good season but he's 29 and fairly one dimensional.

Kante @ £20m is gone too, post-euro's & Mahrez will quickly see what is unfolding & will force a move. Unfortunately, this was an inevitability, given the size of Leicester & them punching well above their weight.

Sky Sports stating Mourinho passed on the opportunity to sign Vardy as he believe's Rashford is the long term future for the club and will benefit from Ibrahimovic being at the club more.

Sounds like someone made it up. Ibra was always the target.

I'm sure he was always the target but they could have still been offered Vardy as well and decided that Rashford would suffer as a result.

Re: Summer Transfer Thread 16/17
Seems highly unlikely. They're signing a striker near the end of his career and they're signing a 29 year old for 20m to be his backup? Doesn't add up.

Re: Summer Transfer Thread 16/17
Not really:
"Hi is that Utd? This is Jamie Vardy's agent here, he has a release clause of £20m, would you like to buy him?"
"No thanks, we have Rashford and are buying Ibrahimovic"

Looks like it's true, Villarreal confirming the deal. Just for United fans, who I presume know very little about him. Graham Hunter on Twitter - 'If #United sign Eric Bailly they're getting a powerful quick competitive CB who's raw but stood out 1st game I saw him for Espanyol'.
22 years old, so Jose giving youth a chance.
