Re: Summer Transfer Thread 16/17
So Higuain moves for £75 million, third highest transfer of all time. Not sure if that's a great deal. He's obviously scored bucket loads, but he's 28 and certainly not the same kind of game changer as Ronaldo, Bale or Suarez were when they were bought. Obviously a huge benefit of the deal is that they've taken their nearest competitors greatest weapon.

I agree, don't think hes a special player personally. For that kind of money I'd be looking for a Bale or Neymar type player and I don't think Higuain is close to that.

Re: Summer Transfer Thread 16/17
He's not got the superstar status of those you've mentioned, but he's a goal-machine in Serie A & that's all Juventus care about, as well as weakening their rivals. I think it's 71 goals in 90 odd starts since he joined Napoli. It's ridiculous. Juve can't attract the top elite players you've mentioned, so they have to dominate the domestic market.
Most goals in Europe's top 5 leagues in the last three seasons:
Ronaldo (114)
Messi (97)
Suarez (87)
Ibrahimovic (83)
Higuain (71)

I don't think it is, they dominate Serie A these days, much like Bayern, they get judged on what they do in Europe. Made the final a year ago. Higuains a very good striker, but I maintain even in this market, for that amount of cash I want a special talent. Don't think hes that.

In this market I think hes worth it. They dont need to worry about 3-4 years, they need to have a goalscorer for Europe now. This is how they compete; they have their incredible defence but get the goalscorer. Hes better than Morata anyway

He should work well with Dybala as well who's the real star of that team.

If the rumours are true, it's a fabulous deal compared to what Napoli are willing to spend to replace him with Milik.Crimey wrote:So Higuain moves for £75 million, third highest transfer of all time. Not sure if that's a great deal.

I've always wanted Real to keep hold of Higuain. He is one of few strikers Real made a huge profit on these past couple of years. The fee Juve paid is around the same as the Luis Suarez one when barca bought him from liverpool and they both moved at a similar age but if Higuain continues his good form it'll look like a bargain.

You must be joking, been much worse signings. He was a loan deal, with two appearances & one goal. Falcao must be up there, in terms of a financial disaster, Shevchenko, Yuri Zhirkov & Veron, were all shockers.

He made 2 appearances in 6 months and his only goal, a penalty, was against Aston Villa. Maybe not worst signing but definitely one of the most pointless.John wrote:nadeem2099 wrote:Pato's moved to Villareal from Corinthians. Worst Chelsea signing ever?

To be fair to Pato, he wasn't fully fit when he arrived so that slowed down the first opportunity to get a game and Bertrand Traore was playing okay up front at the time so he was getting a few games.

Wondered when Wolves would start spending. Ridiculous reports & I'll believe it, when I see it, but Wolves are looking at signing Benfica's Anderson Talisca for €25m. Much rather spend it on experienced, proven championship players

Already signed Pele (former AC Milan),Silvio (Former Atletico) & Helder Costa (spent last year at Monaco) So wouldn't be surprised if Talisca ended up at Molineux either

Re: Summer Transfer Thread 16/17
So Manchester City are going to pay £50 million for John Stones. I appreciate he is young, but after last season he isn't worth 1/5 of that. I imagine Guardiola is banking on Manchester City dominating possession so Stones doesn't have to do the same kind of defending that he struggled with at Everton.
That means in the past couple of years Manchester City will have spent £38 million on Mangala, £30 million on Otamendi and then £50 million on John Stones. Not to mention the Guardian is reporting if Kompany doesn't get back to full fitness soon they'll move for Bonucci who will likely cost £40 million plus.

As you say though, if he gets the team playing how he wants then they won't need to defend anyway.

Until they get to the Champions League and don't have the quality to dominate sides in the same way Barca and Bayern can.

True Crimey.
Maybe Stones and Kompany when fit will be the way to go, Stonea has a lot of potential.

Re: Summer Transfer Thread 16/17
can see stones being another failure, pep will soon realize with the higher tempo of the English game and the less time on the ball you get that playing it out is a lot tougher. defenders will need more than passing ability and be tested in various different ways that he isnt really accustomed to (long ball for instance). stones tries to play it out, but for me defensively he's been very shaky and im not sure pep is the one to teach him. he hasnt built a decent defence yet, (puyols back line at barca being the best which was already in place)
if (big if) kompant stays fit, stones could do well. but they've had some right donkeys next to kompany recently and still looked ok when he's been fit. when he's not they look awful. presume mangala will be on his way out, that guy doesn't know what to do with the ball at his feet
wouldnt be surprised to see fernandinho played at cb

It's amazing how Stones went one from being one of the hottest prospects in Europe to unable to defend in 12 months.

when was he ever one of the hottest prospects in europe? depends if you fall for some hype, the english do like to over hype our english players. i prefer to watch players myself and he has always been abit of a liability at the back when ive watched him. said as much before last season, everton were much more solid with distin at the back

Yeah Guardiola has hinted that he'll play Fernandinho at centre back. Think he's far too short personally. Lucas is the same height and he could just about do it, not sure Fernandinho has the leap or the discipline to play at centre back.
To be fair to Guardiola he did turn Jerome Boateng from a failure at Manchester City into one of the world's best centre backs. No way would Boateng be where he is now without Guardiola's coaching.

see im not sold on boateng, like many centre backs in a dominant pep team he has very little defending to do but looks good doing the other bits, the little bit of defending he does do he recovers a lot due to sheer speed rather than being a great defnder. thought he look shaky against italy and france in the euros which were the only two decent sides they faced

Boateng was decent in the Euros.
Stones suits how Pep wants to play. And he was once very highly regarded. Hes nowhere near as good as Rio when he broke through, but people also should remember he was managed by Martinez last year, the worst manager a defender could ever ask for.

Rumours now that West Ham are going to bring in Jose Enrique as a replacement for Aaron Creswell.
I'd understand that move if it was August 31st, but it's still July! They have plenty of time to get a replacement in, don't need to panic and buy Enrique.
