Utterly magnificent from Ireland. I don't think they can have many complaints about Stander's red, but to hold out for 60 minutes, away from home, against a hugely physical South Africa is very possibly the achievement of the weekend.
You can be very proud of your team.

I think the Joe will see from this the correct configuration of how to get Payne and Henshaw into the team. That shift allowed Marshall to come in, what a game he had, and the different Payne at 15 gave was amazing in terms of our attack.

quinsforever wrote:very very well played ireland. SA underwhelming tbh. not taking anything away from Irelands epic grit.
No-one can say that was a vintage SA performance. That was almost as poor as their showing against Japan in the RWC in my opinion. They looked like individuals trying to make things happen all game. Structure was lacking, and composure was lacking. Complete contrast from us. Ireland were a tightly, drilled, hungry collective. We chased hard, we rucked hard, we did everything we could to disrupt their ball and slow them down.
With 14 men, that's grit and determination and courage. It's traditional Irish Rugby. I'm proud, so proud.
But let's not forget the back of the hand offloads from Jared Payne, the delicate grubber from Luke Marshall for our try, Jacksons probing runs and inside passes- and our ability to move the ball away from their big men. There was plenty of attacking guile which I believe we can marry to the grit. Good times!

Fantastic result. To go to South Africa and win, especially with 14
Men for most of the game is great.
First ever win down there, hopefully next Saturday will be second.

Payne, as suspected, was amazing in bringing players into attack from 15. Simply a superb game from him. I remember getting heavily slated for saying that he would be better at 15 for Ireland than at 13 so I feel somewhat justified after that performance from him.
Marshall in defence was amazing. Finally Ireland had a great balance in the team.

Brilliant gutsy win.
Honestly, I think the issue in the Six Nations was Schmidt having to coach both defence and attack and us having really bad injuries in the tight five. Farrell has come in and taken on the role of defence and contact freeing up Schmidt work more on what he's really good at- I don't know any other Union that would let us go into a tournament with a major vacancy in the coaching staff the other coaches have to cover for. But even with that I think if we had the tight five we had out today we could have won against Wales and France because the scrum would have been a different contest and thats where France and Wales engineered their scores and really ground our pack down.
Not saying we deserved to get anything out of the games, we didn't, they are in the past and its easy to talk hypotheticals until the cows come home... but you can't underestimate the difference Ross and Henderson make to that pack. It's massive. I don't think we were a million miles away from that- it seems like we were awful, but the margins are so thin. It was better than we expected but we have produced similar performances under Schmidt.
I think it was the best result of the Schmidt era, for me the best performance was probably the one we just lost to the All Blacks at the death.

My heart was in my mouth for most of that game. I thought once the red card was shown that was it over. Phenomenal performance from all the players to overcome such odds with 14 men.

Irish rugby has provided the two best performances of the weekend - so far....14 men for almost 60 minutes - incredible, and the U20's, fantastic.

I dunno, I think the eng game was also epic. I think all three have been great, and the eng Saxons game yesterday actually, totally different styles of games.

Re watching the game now, some very dodgy decisions going against SA in the lead up to their yellow card. Cannot understand many of them. The ref is very whistle happy and is not keen on letting the game flow.

Hook is right in saying that Schmidt has been far too reluctant to put Payne at 15 but the rest of it is pure guff. As much as I was really unhappy at Farrell being made the defence coach, I was wrong, that was an amazing defensive shift from Ireland and had Farrell's style all over it.

I will say this though, how many times has Schmidt's hand got to be forced by injuries for him to select the form players in their best positions?
That was one of the most balanced teams Ireland has had under Schmidt and it only came about due to injuries to players.

Re: South Africa v Ireland, 11 June
I wonder how much this improved Ireland is down to Farrells influence and Schmidt being forced into making selection changes? Has Schmidt stumbled into this team against his insticnt? Seems like many of the improvements in terms of selection had been called for some time ago but only been initiated through injuries. I wonder will the old reliables be back once fit? Or will Schmidt stick with the likes of Marshall, Jackson, Dillane and Payne at full back? Looks like Ireland have the makings of a strong side in their with some fresh talent waiting to come through. Not convinced Schmidts natural conservatism is best suited to develop it.

That was just a great win. Gutted for CJ. Must be very hard on him as apart from anything else, Patrick Lambie is a friend of his - they played U20s rugby for the Boks.
Special congratulations to Luke Marshall & Paddy Jackson. Both were fantastic today. What a difference Payne makes at fullback. He was brilliant (and looked to be really comfortable there). Hope he gets to stay there.

Pat Lambie has concussion and is out of the next test at least. But the good news is they've done x-rays etc. and nothing is wrong with his neck. Concussion is too serious an injury to talk about it 'just' being concussion but we're all grateful there was nothing more serious.

I think one of the great eternal truths is that every nation has commentators who are not all there. I know Hook is about 600 years old, and he might be a wee bit out of date and out of touch. But there is something cuddly about the crazy old curmudgeon. At least he is not Neil Francis who is a miserable sack of. And, to be equitable, would you prefer Inverdale????Notch wrote:marty2086 wrote:Good old George Hook spouting out his rear end as per usual trying to suck the joy out of life itself

Inverdale is one who I wouldn't pick on residency even if he lived here for more than three years
Hook is an eejit and comes across as being self-righteous and even thoroughly unpleasant at times. But as you say at least he can be entertaining, like a sozzled auld fella giving an incredibly inappropriate speech at his great-nieces wedding. Horrifying to watch, incredibly bizarre yet somehow compelling... On the other hand, Neil Francis marries his absolutely awful public persona to the personality of a wet dishrag. Yuck.

Cheers doc. For a moment I wanted to turn the game off after the red card to be honest. It was like Payne against Sarries and I thought we were going to get our hearts broken in the same way. I thought that would decide the game right there and then
I'm so glad I didn't because what happened next was incredible.

I was in and out during the first half, but for some reason never turned it off. Came back in just as the Murray try was being replayed for the TMO. A magnetic force stuck me to the couch for the rest of the match.

He was very good today, but what was with that box kick on the half way line that went about 10 metres with about 4 minutes left. Just keep the ball or clear your lines properly.
