The next England manager
First topic message reminder :
As of this moment Gareth Southgate, heavy favourite since Woy wesigned, has declared himself not interested in succeeding Hodgson on a permanent nor interim basis.
So, who is the next England manager? Can we really get by with an interim job and hope Wenger will take it in a year? That would actually be better than pretty much anything I can think of, but is dreamland levels of unlikely.

Player for player there isn't a lot in it. They do have Ronaldo to bale them out, whereas we have, well not much.

Re: The next England manager
Id have all of Portugal's defence, Renato, Carvalho, Nani and Ronaldo in ahead of ours. Definitely.
Id probably argue England would get Hart and then one of our strikers, and id pick from many of the midfielders in Portugal's squad over England.

But Sky believe there has been no contact with Bruce/Allardyce/Klinsmann.
I think I'll send my application in, I've got nothing better to do.

Because the point would be the exact same, I can't be bothered arguing the same point over and over again.

Re: The next England manager
I think Allardyce being odds on speaks to how the public feel about the team. In years gone by there would have been uproar. Sam hasn't changed, England fans have just lost the pride/arrogance in the side and they're sick of being taken for mugs. Whatever qualities Sam has/has not got, he won't let the players come away looking they haven't fought for anything.
And Sam won't be scared. I don't think he'll be scared of this being his last job, both because he knows desperate teams will come calling and because he's done enough now that he probably wouldn't mind retiring anyway.
He's a smart man, but he can be blinded by his own pigheadedness. He's worked with some incredible names and won't suffer fools. It's baffling to me that he's got the backing to do it, but I can support him. He's no mug.

Re: The next England manager
For £4 million a year doing very little most of the time apart from watching a lot of football games on expenses the FA should be able to attract good applicants David Cameron got paid £0.142 million per year for running all of Great Britain & NI. Come to think of it the next England football manager could employ Cameron as tea boy for say £0.2 million a year.

Re: The next England manager
England's weakness is the transition from qualifiers, into knockout football during tournaments. Big Sam has never even won a cup in his entire management career, has no real experience of going deep into cups or tournaments & has never managed at International level. We need a manager who has the skill set & proven ability to overcome the clear problem which has crippled the England national team, tournament after tournament & that is conquering knockout football. I also fear for our younger generation, how on earth can we have Big Sam developing Stones, Alli & Rashford?

Re: The next England manager
Those young players have most of their development with their clubs anyway. They'll be fine.
If Allardyce is appointed, who do Sunderland replace him with? Roberto Martinez?

The problem with employing successful cup winning and league winning non-English managers for England manager, is that their success is based on picking non-English players.

Also, Allardyce would be so good for Stones. He'd teach him how to defend. Cannot give him enough credit for how he improved Tomkins, Reid and even Collins.

Good for the defence, not much for the offense. Unless, Kevin Nolan is appointed as a coach, which is pretty much a dead-cert.

Re: The next England manager
Given this some thought and I wouldn't be that upset if Big Sam got the job.
Having seen how this tournament has panned out, I've had a minor epiphany and decided I'm sick of seeing England playing like headless chickens and getting dumped out of tournaments early.
If Allardyce can get us organised and winning ugly, I'll settle for that.
Its not like there are any real stand-out candidates out there who a) would actually want the job and b) could make a decent fist of it.

Big Sam is the best of a terrible bunch of English managers.
Should be getting a foreign manager in though.

The day the FA all but confessed they're happy with middling status.
How you reach the conclusion Big Sam is the tonic to Hodgson's mess is inexplicable. There's not what you'd call a world of difference between them.
Good luck being the West Ham of international football.

England are crap.
No issue with Sam as a manager, the expensive successful foreigners have been tried and failed and Sam is a good pl level manager.
Hodgson is arguably one of the worst managers England have ever had and I think anyone will be an improvement.

never understood the 66 claim, you only had 3 players in the squad. same as Liverpool and united. and for the most part the squad was mainly northern born players

Captain, Hat trick, other scorer. Its all a bit tongue in cheek but people get really uptight about it so its kind of fun.

I got Sam Allardyce
To be honest, it's pretty much looks a done deal now. Big Sam to be announced as early as next week.

Appointing Allardyce is just following the trend after a number of sides overachieved by not being overambitious, being well organised and having a strong team spirit. Rather see England actually try to play to be honest.

we tried to play this tournament and the last. both with awful results. until we start producing good enough players to play that style were better off sticking to our strengths

We did against Italy, we reverted to type against Uruguay.
Rather see us try and build a style around our younger players than revert to square one. At least England will be vaguely watchable for a change.

weve got plenty of pace to work with, a midfield of not great talent but work hards. would of thought a high pressing high tempo counter attacking style would would more suit us than trying to play the "continental" way

Iceland debacle aside, England were one of the best sides to watch at this tournament for me.
Not saying much given the standard of football played by 90% of the sides there but watching England wasnt a chore for a change (again Iceland debacle aside).

High pressing is great, but you need the ball to do it or you end up knackered with about 30 minutes to go.

Allardyce rarely used high-pressing. Harking back to it, but the time he did for us it was our best play under him. He just reverts to type when he is insecure about the side.

Shearer hated that stance. We were great to watch for 45 minutes vs Russia & that was about it. Then we quickly realised we couldn't hit a barn door & instead of enjoying us dominating possession, we had to endure the predictable blowing of chance, after chance, which was more embarrassing
Under Allardyce, we will try & copy Portugal. End of

Shearer also wants Steve Bruce to get the England job so I really couldn't give a toss about his opinion frankly.
