SURREY VS WARWICKSHIRE SPECSAVERS COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP Empty SURREY VS WARWICKSHIRE SPECSAVERS COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

Post by jimbobgooner Fri 01 Jul 2016, 3:20 pm

SURREY HAVE NAMED A TWELVE MAN SQUAD FOR THE SPECSAVERS COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH AGAINST WARWICKSHIRE AT GUILDFORD STARTING ON SATURDAY.
Aaron Finch will make his Surrey debut having joined up with the squad this week and Mark Footitt is available for selection having recovered from the side strain that kept him out of action in recent weeks. Gary Wilson has been left out of the squad but Sam Curran returns after completing his school commitments.
Jason Roy is unavailable for selection because he is playing for England in the current One Day Series against Sri Lanka. Kumar Sangakkara and Ravi Rampaul are both playing in the Caribbean Premier League.
Jade dernbach and Dominic Sibley remain on the treatment table.
Matthew Dunn is available but not considered match fit yet.
The Surrey squad to play Warwickshire in the Specsavers County Championship at Woodbridge Road on Saturday 2nd July, Sunday 3rd July, Monday 4th July and Tuesday 5th July :
Gareth Batty (capt)
Zafar Ansari
James Burke
Rory Burns
Sam Curran
Tom Curran
Steven Davies
Aaron Finch
Ben Foakes
Mark Footitt
Arun Harinath
Stuart Meaker
ironically gary wilson scored a unbeaten hundred for the XI yesterday but it wasn't enough to save him.
Looking like Burke will miss out again and baby face being pushed up the order (top 6)

Thanks, Jimbob.  Agree with your assessment about Burke missing out. Not sure where Sam Curran will bat - it could be No 7 rather than 6  unless he comes in ahead of Foakes (or possibly Ansari). Interesting to see how Finch gets on!

Burns, Harinath, Davies, Finch, Ansari, Foakes, Sam Curran, Tom Curran, Batty, Meaker, Footitt

Heck of a bowling line up - batting is also pretty deep. A good side

Currently in Durham without radio contact much of the time. Should be back and attending tomorrow.

Like you all, I expect Burke to miss out. Even though Warks are a good to very good team, we need to set out for the win and for that we need our best bowling attack to try and take 20 wickets. If Footitt can play and bowl near to his capabilities, he'll rightly edge Buirke out even though he (Footitt) weakens the batting.

Agree on Burke to miss out. No real number three in the squad though. Could see Ansari back up the order opening with Harinath or Burns pushed to number three.

Burke misses out as we expected. Sy win toss and bat - right choice but need to watch out for my man Ronnie. Ansari at 3 from scorecard.

Vital that we get decent haul of batting points.  With two from three (Hants, Surrey, Notts) likely to be relegated every point counts.

Thanks, Corporal. It's a long way back from Durham. Mrs Bat currently driving the tank.

Although it isn't normally at Guildford, pitch might be a turner. See Warks have included Poysden - don't really know him but pretty sure he's a spinner.

79 - 1 from 29 overs as rain brings an early lunch. Burns on 45* and Ansari 11. At least rain prevented us giving a couple of wickets just before the interval. Steady start.

Hmmm. Steady or very slow? Won't rush to judgment but Guildford is a small ground with normally a quick outfield. We want to be bowling some time after lunch tomorrow with a decent score on the board. In essence, reasonable that we've only lost 1 wicket but we are going to need to step it up before too long.

123 - 3 and yet another rain delay. Finch on 33 from 29 balls has picked up the scoring rate.  I suppose the only thing to be said for Ansari's innings was that he well and truly saw off the new ball.

The slow scoring was why I suggested he open and one of the others drop down. 3 doesn't need to be an ultra-aggressive position, but hasto be able to move the game on. From this side, I'd probably have Burns at 3.

Hi guys - I'm back home now, about 5 or so miles from the Woodbridge Road ground. Raining where I am atm but some blue sky not far away. Pretty sure they'll play again today.

Apologies that I'm probably being naive but what would have been the issue with Finch batting at 3? Given we signed him as a temporary replacement for Sanga, that's where I assumed he would bat. Admittedly, haven't followed things much this week (didn't realise Finch was on board until I saw JimBob's thread) or looked them up. Maybe there are problems with him doing that but it doesn't seem to suit any of the others much either.

Steve Davies falls for 13 - the third Surrey batsman to perish for low double figures. Rolling Eyes

Meanwhile, a good call by Jimbob as Sam Curran comes in ahead of Foakes at No 6.  159 - 4 with Finch on 60.

251/8. Not seen any of today's play or heard a commentary but based on what I know of the ground and previous Surrey games there, that's a long way short.

Warwick's ease into the lead with 6 wickets in hand, Surrey victory chance has long disappeared. Surrey 'spinners' into their 26th over with a return of 1 wicket, in comparison to the 5 in 17 overs on the first day for Warwick

Thought we bowled and fielded pretty well today. The problem was - and is - we didn't get enough runs on the board first dig. Trott and Bell's century partnership was a mini masterclass in showing how it should be done. Patient and respectful to begin with, then they took control and played their shots.

Foakes was very impressive and in a quiet, understated way our stand out player. Continually tidy glove work, several athletic stops to prevent byes and a fine legside catch off Footitt's bowling - look out for that on the highlights package. Only a matter of time before he's playing at international level.

Btw, Chris Morris was bowling on the outfield at lunch. He's bigger and quicker than I thought.

You there for the next couple of days Guildford? Be interested to hear what you think of Finch if you see him bat - Morris was always high on the speed guns during the SA-Eng series if I remember correctly!

No run outs or stumpings in the Warwick innings! 1 wicket for the 'spinners'
Harinath already out for a duck, when we need to bat at least 4 sessions, just to save the game.

Footitt bowled fast and well this morning. Got most lift out of the track. Deserved his wickets. Important early wicket of Clarke by Sam Curran shouldn't be overlooked though. Things turned out bad enough anyway but if it had been Ricky and Ronnie at each end, it would have been carnage!

Patel bowling already and on the spot in his first over. Ronnie at the other (pavilion) end seems to be getting a bit of movement which accounted for Baron.
