Wimbledon 2016 - Mens Quarterfinals
First topic message reminder :
Schedule and Live Scores.
All four QFs are intriguing.
Raonic v Querrey - Raonic played a five-setter vs Goffin, while Querrey has been good nick. An upset with Querrey coming through, perhaps?
Federer v Cilic - Federer may have reached his limit. A miracle is needed for him to go through. I keep Pancho at the back of mind, though.
Berdych v Pouille - Big stage for Pouille. Berdych has experience, but Pouille has youth. The Vesely match may help Pouille with a bit of confidence.
MotD - Murray v Tsonga. Tsonga is a dangerous Grass player. Murray's taming of Kyrgios should give him faith in his own ability to get to Final.

Murray cannot afford to play safe here. Anything mid-court is getting the treatment.

Cant find his serve. Pays the price. This match has divebombed since the 1st set

Apart from a dodgy service game, I don't think Tsonga's level has dropped off in this set. He's clearly the more confident of the two. Think Tsonga is someone who plays better when he just relaxes and goes for it.

Re: Wimbledon 2016 - Mens Quarterfinals
This is one of those matches when it will be sad to see someone lose it. Both Murray and Tsonga have put a lot of effort into this match playing some fantastic rallies and shots from time to time. Given the relative rarity of Tsonga reaching semi finals and finals in slams it would be a shame for Tsonga to lose this. However as a "patriot" I favour Murray. Also Murray is more likely to capitalise on this win rather than Tsonga who is more likely to lose in the semi-final or final.

Not the point really. The quality has gone right down from the 1st set, Murray just missed 2 bp's by missing easy final shots

Intensity seems to have gone up a notch. That should favour Murray, but we will see.

From getting a break to lead in the fourth set Murray was then broken on his service and then Tsonga held. This fourth set can go either way.

Re: Wimbledon 2016 - Mens Quarterfinals
The intensity has gone down from the first set definitely, but it is still quite a good quality. If they kept the intensity up from the first set one might expect them to be on peds.temporary21 wrote:Not the point really. Great stuff from Tsonga.
Hopefully now he can wrap up the 5th.
Sorry not a Murray fan.

So we're into the lottery of a 5th set. If Tsonga can stay loose, he's going to be a real handful. Reality is that Murray could play well and still lose it. Don't think I've ever watched Murray lose from 2 sets up.

Jo Willy took the fight to Murray in that fourth.

My mum and sister have tickets for centre court on Friday. They'll be gutted if Andy doesn't come through this.

Re: Wimbledon 2016 - Mens Quarterfinals
From 4-2 up in the fourth set and having just won serve, Murray lost the next four games. Murrays intensity did drop again immediately after he broke Tsonga. Tsonga has just been better at maintaining his intensity following his own drop off after the first set (when he lost the second set 6-1).
Tsonga seems to be the better player. Murray can only win if he out-does Tsonga for intensity.

5th set shootout against a big server is not a place you want to be. Can Tsonga keep hitting these BHs under pressure?

Re: Wimbledon 2016 - Mens Quarterfinals
Yes. From the beginning of the third set Murray is finding it very difficult to hold serve and this is draining away his confidence and energy. He I think has to hope that Tsonga's intensity drops further and that he himself finds a "second wind".temporary21 wrote:Too easy for Tsonga... hes in eevry service game now

Re: Wimbledon 2016 - Mens Quarterfinals
That last rally was performed at a pedestrian pace. Murray won that rally by outmanoeuvring Tsonga off the court rather than playing a hard put away.

Re: Wimbledon 2016 - Mens Quarterfinals
This is how you have to play when you have lost intensity. Pedestrian rallies plus tactics.

On occasion each player is able to raise their intensity for a single point, but their average level is definitely quite low. This requires intelligent tennis.
