Pot Hale wrote:wolfball wrote:Irish Londoner wrote:In terms of choosing a ground, is there an issue regarding a preference for a rugby stadium rather than "borrowing" a football or GAA stadium as paying the rent is taking money out of the game. So a final held at Union or Club owned stadium would keep the money in rugby.
This isn't just a PRO12 thing - for example when Saracens got to the HEC semis in 2014, the RFU made them play at Twickenham as Allianz Park was too small and Saracens were looking at using a football stadium but were overruled.
The Galway and Mayo GAA branches recently ruled out any use of Galway stadia (or McHale park in Mayo) by Connacht, as the current pan GAA rules state that Croke Park is allowed be used by rugby, and non-croke park GAA stadia are allowed be used for rugby internationals (RWC bid) but provincial teams are not allowed use any GAA ground that isn't croke park. It would need a GAA central branch vote to change this, and supposedly there are no motions to make this happen anytime soon.
I wasn't aware of that, Wolfball. That's unfortunate. Do you think they could organise a motion if Connacht wanted to pursue that or is it too much grief?
Its a live conversation between Connacht's general manager and the GAA, though recent comments from GAA as I mentioned, have been negative. Connacht is trying to get itself into a larger stadium, its current options are:
1. Refurbish the sportsgrounds from 8K to 10-12k capacity- Big issue is Greyhound org have a huge amount of power and so it seems like getting that sized a stadium plus keep the grehound track there is very difficult. Its a tiny plot of land and from what I've heard, the best they are hoping for is extending maybe one stand to get it to 10K capacity. I put it at 50% chance of happening, and its my preference
2. There has long been talk of a new stadium by the docklands of 15-18k, which would also be a concert venue. A galway city counselor had brought it up a number of times in formal meetings, but Connacht would need a big partner to afford buying the land and developing that. i put it at 10% chance of happening
3. A partnership to allow use of Pearse (or mchale) stadium. As per my comments above, and because rugby and GAA in the west of ireland are very much at odds with other, I put that at a 5-10% shot.

For those who don't realise the obvious, Dai Llewod is Chunky Norwich. This is what he does. He creates a seemingly innocuous thread under the false pretence of civilised debate before returning later to introduce subtle digs against Irish rugby.
I'm sure he will be back to antagonise the Irish fans on their match day threads as well.

Carry on, but this is exactly how things played out last time. None of these threads are going to end well.

I believe these threads usually conclude with conspiracy theories unfounded, as with this one. With Chunky & Co. it's the volume of threads and circular reasoning employed that can be irksome.

I had it pinned as Chunky, although a Dai/Chunky/Phil combo wouldn't be stretching it
I see GWlad is closing either today or tomorrow, I think. Be prepared!

It isn't PhilBB.
Chunky was/is certainly not a harmless poster and managed to derail almost every Ulster rugby thread and other Irish rugby threads. As he is now back (Dai Llewod) he will probably fall back into old habits.
As I said last season, if it is all kept on these sorts of threads that is fine. I'm just acknowledging that this isn't likely to happen.

I do not think you can nominate any stadium you want though. Didn't Glasgow want to host a final in Rugby Park, but they were refused ?

Good news to read that Guinness are to continue as title sponsor until 2020.
I also see that 35K attended Edinburgh (which was fairly good going considering it was two Irish teams). It would seem now that the final is a bit of an event which I can see attracting a much better attendance and where it can only be staged in large capacity stadia and will hopefully end up being rotated between all the countries (with Cardiff the following season, and possibly Rome the season after that).

If tender criteria from 2014 were followed at the time, the teams could be creative and imaginative in their proposals and nominate any suitable stadium as long as it had minimum 18k capacity.
However, the PRO 12 have now decided to move the final hosting around big stadia with likely Cardiff next season and Rome in 2019 and unions being invited to tender. PRO12 will continue to manage it overall.

Tickets range from €5 for U18s to €90. €15 is cheapest for adults.

Of course. Its the bloody league final. For someone always on about supporting "OUR" league (essential caps), you don't like to put your money where your mouth is do you? Also, all tickets aren't £77, most people will be paying around 50.

Ah, silly me. £50, that makes it alright then.
I could afford it easily but I would not pay it on principle. Not when you consider the deal you get on Judgement day at the Principality stadium. Those prices are extortionate.

Well, it is the PRO 12 Final and if someone's team is playing in it, clearly they think there are people who would be willing to do so.
The full range is 15, 17.50, 25, 30, 35, 50, and premium/corporate 60, 80, 85, 90 euros.
Under 18s for a fiver is a steal.
I've just booked my two tix.

The prices up to £35 are fair. I would pay those prices. I would not pay the higher prices though, and to be fair, profitus did not say they were corporate prices.

Fair enough that's your view. They are premium and corporate seats though - what price do you think they should be in a 50,000 seater stadium? I'm aware that sterling has dropped in value against the euro.

Isn't higher prices a good sign? It means people want to see the final.

Only if they sell. As you say, Guinness will probably do a fair amount of promotion around it which is good. A stadium sell-out would be a great achievement within three years of starting the destination final idea. Not sure they will though.

Its your prerogative to pay what you want. Judgement day is hardly the league final though is it? Again, it just puts your crocodile tears about Irish treatment of the league in perspective... For me, I am so rarely in Ireland these days, just delighted to support the league when i can.

Well been away for a while due to work and holiday's.
Glad nothing has changed.........
Anyway. The wife has agreed to come over to Dublin for the final, (well a long weekend where we go to the final) so it's been a while since I have been back, and looking for recommendations for a hotel?
All thoughts welcome
Cheers in advance gents

This thread is an interesting microcosm of the Pro12 and a good indication of why it struggles. Keeping everyone happy is always difficult. Major changes required. But how?

Fair prices. Why should people be expected to pay almost double to watch their team they have payed to watch all season ?
I pay about £20 to watch the regions, I would expect a price around that range to watch them in a final, perhaps £5 or £10 more. Anything else and your paying international rate prices.

Have you had a look at prices for The FA Cup final, the Champions League final, the ERC final, the Aviva final, etc. ? You may notice a pattern in the prices compared to league games !

You said the prices up to £35 were fair. That's about €42.
The higher priced seats are what they call corporate/premium seats. You said these prices are too high/extortionate. So I'm asking you what price ranges you think they should be at. You can give me sterling or euro values - I don't mind.
