Quality has not been good at all.....it's made it for an intriguing afternoon though...
Rory really has been piss poor.....I imagine he will play 4 perhaps even all 5 matches but he really shouldnt.

Well has their ever been a more average afternoon of golf from Europe and yet win so clearly (fingers crossed i haven't cursed us).....
Very poor from USA....Bjorn will have to decide whether the wins are enough to stick with these pairings tomorrow or whether it may be a case of a couple of groups got away with it because America were so bad

Hmm, maybe being in play is quite important in 4somes?owen10ozzy wrote:Rory can't hit irons is playing the majority of Par 3's.....Poulter can't drive far playing the tee shot off the majority of longer holes....
I m still shocked to see Casey/Olesen being sat this afternoon at expense of Rory....big big shout from Team Europe

you can only beat what's put in front of you - however, although I'm only listening rather than watching it sounds like the Euros are playing rather well - in addition to the yanks stinking the place out

I have been lectured that when a Euro Team wins, it always because they play well, and never because the US team played badly. Especially when Poulter is on the winning side.
- Spoiler:
- See, I can take statements out of context also.
All 4 of the US Teams are playing like CRAP. Noren/Sergio are playing well, and they would be boatracing every other team out there.

Here we go again GPB. It's getting tiring.
The US team are playing poorly, but some of the European players aren't playing tremendously either. To use your formula for deciding whether someone is playing well, Rose/Stenson are only level par. So if they can do it, why can't the Sptics?
You as usual, aren't taking everything into account. It's 20mph wind gusts ffs.

Well enough to win.....but average enough to know that they can't rely on US being this poor tomorrow. Rose/Stenson won with score of even par...says it all really
Completely agree GPB...giving Garcia more credit than deserves too....Noren has been the standout player...followed by Fleetwood who made some crunching putts over first 9. The rest have been bang on average as reflected by the actual scores to par...
USA completely threw away this morning's success and I'd be shocked to see Mickelson...Bryson...Webb or Fowler tomorrow morning perhaps even afternoon. Bubba wasn't bad...certainly wasn't helped by Webby.

Have to laugh at all this commentary. It's 4somes, which is not that easy and not around that venue I would imagine. Lots of backing water from previous commenters and explaining it as USA more scheiss than Europe. If you're Europe, who cares?

Is there any doubt that the USA team must have just had one of the worst collective performances any of us can remember in RC history? Garcia chopping his way around the course didn't even matter.

Rose/Stenson and Rory/Poulter made one birdie apiece in the foursomes.
Both on the drive-able par 4 6th hole.
FWIW, Rory/IJP were conceded about a 20 footer on their last hole. I guess technically it was a birdie, but realistically, probably not..

GPB, I know you're a strokeplay obsessive, but I don't think you realise just how more difficult foursomes is, not just that but the course is absolute nails, throw in that, the wind, the tension and you don't have a recipe for good scoring.
How you play isn't that important, you only have to play better than the opposition. USA played better in the morning, Europe in the afternoon. Try and excuse each teams wins as the other team playing crap if you like, but it only shows you just don't get it.
Sometimes sport is simply won by an ordinary performance, but a win is a win, and I'm sure you don't dismiss it when your favourite NFL, NBA, NHL etc team wins "ugly".

Big gamble I feel from Jim going with the same pairs again first thing tomorrow. If it goes badly he goes into a foursomes afternoon with a sizeable deficit and a choice of players who lost in the morning or lost in the same format 24 hours before. If the morning goes well, either he reverts to today’s failed foursomes teams or Bubba, Phil, Webb and Bryson go into Sunday cold. That would require a heavy lead behind it.

I don't see why people can't criticise the performance of america....or pick apart poor performances ...would be a rather boring place if everyone just came on and said ...
"Can only best what's in front of you"....
I don't even agree that America played better in the morning.. On the whole I thought the morning session was even but we failed to convert coming in...especially in the last 4 holes....
Afternoon session saw rather average performances across the board from Europe bar Noren and Fleetwood (whose putting is a thing of beauty)....but the Americans capitulated soon as they fell behind in the games.

Gamble he has to take i think....they came out on top this !morning and were clinical in key moments which is a necessity tomorrow where they are now chasing.
I'm more perplexed by Bjorns choices...outside of Fleetwood/Molinari it's almost as if he doesn't know his best pairings. On paper that Rory/Garcia pairing looks atrocious! Was wrong today though so you never know could produce something sensational

Mac,
Did you see that Mount Rushmore's First Day record has regressed to:
3 wins
11 losses
1 half?
owen,
Don't you think Bjorn is just lining up his foursomes pairings & singles fitness?
He'll have another decision to make lunchtime tomorrow unless Europe at least splits the morning, as Molinari has reportedly told St.Thomas that he doesn't feel up to 5 matches . . . . . . .
Not sure Poulter is the right partner for Rahm who rather looked as if he got over-amped up this morning and ran out of gas. Good work for Captain Tom so far though.

I’m not sure Rahm is controllable when it comes to adrenaline. Rose along with Stenson is surely the go-to European for coolheaded experience and he didn’t help. Maybe Bjorn has decided to fight fire with fire, if you can’t keep a lid on Rahm’s emotion then try him with someone who knows how to focus it.

As I pointed out earlier this month,
GPB wrote:In match play, it is not always how you play, it is how your opponents play.
FWIW, the statement is a generalization, and there are exceptions to the rule.
You can play well and win, you can play well and lose, you can play badly and win, and you can play badly and lose.
And yes, the scorecard doesn't always tell the entire story. But IMO, it tells MOST of the story.
But I did watch the Rory/IJP vs Bubba/Webb match today, and there is no way that I can IJP (or Rory) played well this afternoon. Poulter's drive off #1 went into the water. Rory drove the green on #6, and Poulter left the eagle putt 10 ft short. (Rory made the putt). The US teams played like Crap on a cracker and Rory/IJP (and Stenson/Rose) were fortunate that they played two teams.
No go ahead, take this post out of context like you typically do. Go mock the personal lives of the Americans (ignoring the crucifixes that Rory and Sergio wear). Make superficial fun of the American Names.
Yes NFL, MLB, etc. teams do win ugly at times. You may not think I know much about golf, but I know enough about golf that it has little in common with professional team sports like Basketball, football, soccer, hockey and Baseball and trying to draw correlations and analogies is probably not the smartest thing to do.

Kinda surprised that Danny Willett won't be playing next week's Dunhill, but he's committed for the "Safeway Open" field, in Napa, California. Perhaps he's having another crack at playing on the PGA Tour?
Knox, Laird and Power also in the field, plus Phil Mickelson - who you'd think should be well rested.
