First topic message reminder :
Actually Davie, they didn't fit yours (apologies; 'idiocy' is a bit strong). Your earlier comments were all about how he'd actually done something terrible/illegal i.e. told them how to get around 3rd party ownership (he didn't) with the possible implication that he'd been knowingly involved in it (no evidence of this), took £400k for dodgy seminars (he didn't and he said he'd have to clear it with the FA) etc. You wanted him to be a crook from the off.
You also claimed Ben and I said he was 'innocent' - we said no such thing.
You never took S_R's approach re. his position being untenable because he was England manager, the one thing he probably falls foul of. His comments re. Hodgson/Nevile were unfortunate, but this was a private conversation and, actually, big deal. Seriously, the next poor schmuck who takes this on should treat the media as they deserve.
There may well be more to this - we'll see. Until then, the only thing he's 'guilty' of is putting himself in a stupid position cf. the FA's comments re. FIFA etc and forcing the FA to ask him to fall on his sword. S_R's right with this; the FA had little choice really.

Tierney looked a little off the pace in the Man City match at celtic park. Although I doubt he would ever have played against players of that quality so I guess there is no point holding that against him.
The Scottish league is one of the best supported per capita in Europe but there are just too many pro clubs. With a population of 5 million it could probably support 20 or so and hope to have 4 or 5 that would be respectable enough to compete in Europe.
kwini
What about Darren Fletcher? One of the best central midfielders in the EPL for at least 3-4 years running at one point.

Mac,
I like Fletcher but he's not exactly Pat Crerand or out of the mold of Scottish midfielders of generations past, whether as a Souness look-alike or Archie Gemmell, let alone the wizards of the Baxter/Cooke/White eras.
I know they're going back a long way, but we're not seeing players of that quality relative to Europe's best any more.
Mac,
I guess the point I wanted to make was that, up until 20 years ago, every top club had a Scot or two absolutely integral to their success. ('Course, now there are scarcely any English players essential to top clubs' success.)

Kwini, I don't know much about Tierney other than that he's very highly rated by the European clubs. I wouldn't imagine he'd stay at a deadbeat club like Celtic too long, although Forrest is showing that lack of ambition by staying with them, so maybe Tierney will too.
You could say something similar for English players, a population 10 times that of Scotland, yet there isn't a great deal coming through from there either.

I DID say "something similar for English players"!
Any word from the R&A about announcements for the 2020 and 2021 Opens? Has Drumpf not done enough to get his Turnberry blackballed??
The USGA are leaving it very late to take the 2017 US Women's Open from Drumpf National in NJ. Astonishing really that the LPGA seems not to have filed a protest about that.

It's funny how in most sports Britain is really progressing, yet in Football, Wales apart, it's going rapidly backwards.

NI are pretty stinking. One swallow doesn't make a summer, but they do have the excuse of being a tiny, potato starved country. They're probably too busy spitting at school children, forcing pregnant women to have babies and painting horrible murals on Belfast slums to practice hard enough.

NI and Wales play so well as a team, something England seem usually to be incapable of. Not to mention the fact that Wales's two biggest talents are both 100% committed to the cause, another thing England's best seem incapable of.

True BTB, they did better than England could dream of, but I think they need to prove it wasn't a fluke and they aren't doing brilliantly this time round, lagging behind the might of Azerbajan.

The whole England thing is a mystery Kwini, you had the most exciting attacking line up of any team in the Euros imo, just couldn't get the ball to them.

Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
Pretty sure both Germany and France had better attacking line ups than England did.
The mistake people make with England is that being half decent at domestic football when you are surrounded by very good foreigners means that will automatically translate to a good international team. Doesn't work that way, for England at least. It's like expecting a clay court specialist to be able to be just the same on grass. Naïve, and why England come with this absurd expectation and "right" to beat teams like Iceland.
Lars Lagerback had it right when he said before the match "We're about the play the most over-rated team in World Football" So it proved.

Wha? Kane & Vardy? There's no team in Europe domestic or International that wouldn't want those two up front. Are ya mad?

Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
Same old England, half decent domestic players, useless Internationally. It's like expecting David Ferrer to suddenly become a Grass Court specialist. Not going to happen, just because he can play on clay, same as England players internationally.
France would rather have Griessman and Germany would rather have Muller. Neither would be desperate for either Vardy or Kane, neither of whom play better than 6/10 for England.

Incidentally, Jesus is quite a common name in Spain.
I think it's really bizarre that some of you find it weird. It's a traditional Christian name, no stranger than Joseph or Mary or John etc.

John isn't a Christian name. It's no more Christian than Matthew, Paul, Mark or Luke. Just because they were in the bible, doesn't mean they originated there.

So Jesus isn't a Christian name either. Or Mohammad a Muslim name.

It might be, I don't know. Just because Jesus might have come from the bible, doesn't mean John does.
John has Greek origins which predate the bible. I don't care if Mohammad is a Muslim name either.

Good point. Furthermore, all those apostles had their names before they allegedly even met Jesus.
Interestingly though, the name Wendy was made up by JM Barrie for Peter Pan.

It wasn't though. Wendy was a name used by both Male and female in the 1881 census and in 1880 US census. Though it may have gained in popularity after Peter Pan.
Sometimes Wikipedia needs to be checked.

Speaking of religious lunatics, I was at a College "Football" game in Houston last week and to a man, every player on each team knelt in the end zone and prayed for a win, and people actually cheered as if this was a good thing.

There was a muslim football team that used to play on the pitch next to us every week, and they would all gather round on their knees in a circle and pray before matches. They would all gather round a guy standing in the middle who would put on a long white robe and cap to lead the prayers.
Their matches were so bad-tempered, always interrupted by massive arguments

I'm not sure what I did, but I probably smirked at the stupidity of it, especially at the guy who stayed kneeled for an extra 60 seconds just to show how much devoted he was than the others. Wonder what the losing team did.

Just to clarify my comment about Christian names. Clearly Jesus is a name that pre-dates Christianity, but it is a traditional name that Christians choose for a boy.
And if you search for Jesus Gil you will see that it is appropriate for sinners as well as saints.

Of course it does, in terms of the number of different nationalities present, it's probably one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the UK after London.
Doesn't mean that those people are unfortunate enough to have religiously sourced names though.
I've never even heard the name Belen before.
