As said before, Stewart as at a week ago had the most owgr points in 2016 of Scots not called Laird & Knox. Certainly Knox's choice is nowhere near as indefensible as it might seem at first glance.

Unless you play (8% of population) no one is going to watch or be aware of golf or golfers. It's a man with some sticks trying to get a ball in a small hole in the grass. Hardly the most engaging 'sport'. Playing the feckin game changes everything....

Willett really shouldn't have been on the short list. The organisers were guilty of a terrible "inclusive" shortlist, surprised they didn't have medals for "most improved personality". Great Masters win but then didn't back it up over the summer, and minimal contribution in the Ryder Cup.

A golfer needs to win the Masters and the Open, plus do something else (e.g. win Ryder Cup, get to world no.1, win Olympic gold) to be in the frame for SPOTY.

Didn't he win the Tour de France again this year?

Probably, but I think the whole TUE issue has made cycling a bit of a hot potato.

Started to read the article but then lost interest in what he had to say. Don't think it's up to Rory to grow women's golf, it's up to Mary and his team. You could say Rory owes his sponsors and the game of golf in general, but this guy is taking a very narrow minded and self-interested view on Rory's obligations.

I find the whole growing the game thing BS anyway. What do people even mean when they use the term? Grow prize funds, increase participation, attract sponsors, widen diversity. It could mean anything.

Whatever definition you pick the likes of Rory and Tiger will do more for the game whether or not they try to.

If Mary McKenna wants more media attention for the Womens game, then having a rant at Rory is I suppose one way of getting it. Not sure that's the type of coverage she wants though.

As for Rory's efforts re Womens golf, he's been actively trying to persuade the members of Portmarnock to change their men only members policy. He was also quite vocal about Muirfield over the summer.
