Confirmed on Glasgow's website that Finn Russell and Johnny Gray have been bought out of their contracts and are off to France next season.
Thats a blow!
it's also fake news but how many of you spat your coffee out right now? Or how many went to the website to check? Also, how long is GC going to ban me for?

Tom Brown signs a 2 year contract with Edinburgh.
Not fake news.
Only 26 still and and a local boy, good bit of business and whoever comes in to take over the coaching team (I've decided I'm unwilling to believe even the SRU can give Hodge the role full time) won't be disappointed to have him in the squad.

It is good news too. If every Edinburgh player put as much effort in as he and Hamish Watson does then we'd be in a much better place.
Good winger to have and an Edinburgh lad too.

The basis of all fake news is that it is, on some level, believable, or at least you want to believe it. If you were to tell me that Russell and Gray had been signed by Clermont, I'd have believed the underlying basis of the news: that they're already good enough to boss it in the Top14.tigertattie wrote:Confirmed on Glasgow's website that Finn Russell and Johnny Gray have been bought out of their contracts and are off to France next season.

If you were to tell me that Edinburgh had reached the Pro12 playoffs, I'd have spat out my double-espresso at the very idea!

Agreed. Brown is a heart on sleeve sort of player and Edinburgh have had precious few of those over the years. He lacks the out and out pace/acceleration that we had with Visser and have with Hoyland, but he's a brave player who rarely makes mistakes. Handy to have, plus he can also play 15.

Any word on the Edinburgh coaching situation? It seems to have gone rather quiet, particularly given the fact that Edinburgh are signing players for next season (albeit I can't think of many coaches who would turn down Mark Bennett).
Surely they are not considering Duncan Hodge for the permanent role??

I think after seeing Russell's conversion attempt, it's more likely that Chris Paterson will come out of retirement!

In other news I became an uncle for the first time earlier in the week - it's not even mine and I'm terrified of the prospect of a new baby in my life! Terrified and excited of course.
He's got chunky legs so I've already got dreams of all the free tickets I'll get when we plays for Scotland!
It is also shown how ridiculously expensive the SRU's baby clothes are - what a rip off!

Nephews are absolutely great
1. you can play with them until you get bored and then just hand them back to the parents
2. you can fill them with sugar and then hand them to the parents
3. they are very handy chick magnets and then when you say you're uncle! Boom! yer in
for sports clothing for a baby, get along to Sports direct! My nephew was given macron shorts and the shirt (not by me) at a cost of £40 in all and they fitted him for about a month!
Also, careful about pining your hopes on free tickets from a future internationalist! I had my nephew pegged as a number 8 and I was going to teach him all that I know now! only thing is he's now 2 and he's a scrawny wee thing that cries when he falls over!

That's what I was thinking too, and I'm glad it's a boy so I can teach him all I know about rugby (which should take 5 minutes). Obviously if it was a girl then she may have played rugby too of course.
Problem is his old man is a massive Aberdeen fan so I'm sure he'll try and influence him there!

Obviously....
If BabyfES is to defy genetics and be good at sports, I'd want her to be good at tennis. I quite fancy spending my dotage following the women's tennis tour.
Mrs RDW will be pushing you for baby RDWs soon. There ends life as you know it.....

I'd say we probably have more chance of Scotland winning the 6N - if you ever meet her don't say 'oh you'll change your mind soon' as you'll probably get a punch in the face!

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread XV Men Chasing An Egg?!
In other news I eventually managed to secure tickets for the Glasgow v Sarries quarter final this morning. I thought I had lost my chance when my computer at work froze just at the point when I was about to press the pay button. Of course by the time I had got back onto the system, the ones i had origianlly lined up had gone.
Anyway sarries apparently released some more tickets shortly afterwards and I managed to get some of them. We are a bit spread out, the best I could do was 2 together, but that will have to do.
Over 4000 tickets sold for Glasgow fans, that is quite impressive and there may be some more down the line if sarries don't sell all of their own allocation.

Strange that one of the most successful clubs in Europe has such a small fan base (relatively speaking) that they have to release extra tickets to the opposition for a European Quarter final!

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread XV Men Chasing An Egg?!
Edinburgh Rugby Acting Head Coach Duncan Hodge has named five personnel changes to his side for tomorrow night’s (Friday 17 February) Guinness PRO12 clash against Leinster at the RDS Arena (kick-off 7.35pm) – live on BBC ALBA.
Glenn Bryce starts at full-back
After a successful stint with Scotland 7s, Glenn Bryce returns to start at full-back in place of Blair Kinghorn, who moves to the bench.
Sam Hidalgo-Clyne is named in the number nine jersey and will be partnered by Duncan Weir, who returns from Scotland national team duty to take up the stand-off berth.
Neil Cochrane is set to pack down at hooker, while Cornell Du Preez comes into the side to start at number eight.
Hodge said: “We’re back on the road and know Leinster are a tough team to overcome, especially on their home patch.
“As a squad, we’ve learned a lot from last week’s match against Ulster and will look to take the positives from an encouraging second-half display into this week’s game.
“The players showed a lot of character and resolve last week in overcoming the challenges of what was a high-tempo and physical encounter.
“Those involved tomorrow night will need to show a similar tenacity and perform for the full 80 minutes if we’re to challenge the home side.”
Tom Brown – who announced he’s extended his time with the capital club for a further two seasons– continues on the left wing, joining Damien Hoyland and Bryce in the back-three.
Phil Burleigh and Chris Dean continue as the centre partnership outside Weir and Hidalgo-Clyne.
Jack Cosgrove and Murray McCallum start at loosehead and tighthead prop respectively, completing the front-row alongside Cochrane.
Jamie Ritchie – a late call-up into last week’s match-day squad – is named on the openside flank, with Magnus Bradbury moving to the blindside to accommodate for the inclusion of Du Preez in the back-row.

Amazed to see Ritchie back - he looked very groggy when he left the field last weekend.
Gilchrist and Weir return from Scotland. Hodge said in the Scotsman this morning that Gilchrist's performances earlier in season weren't up to his previous standards - something GIlchrist himself supposedly admits.
Still no Anton Bresler? Does this mean he's on his way out? Would be a shame.
Also, our 4 props listed must be the worst collection of props in the league

McCallum has been ok for us! Seems to scrum well and puts in a shift?

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread XV Men Chasing An Egg?!
I noticed via a tweet that Kevin Bryce is packing down at TH for Hawick this weekend. It is good that he is over his injury and playing again, hope they give him a few club games this time to find his feet in the position before easing him back in at Pro level again. It did all seem way to rushed last time.
This could be a really important game for CDP as well, his chance to really make a statement for a Scotland cap. I hope that he fulfils his promise.

A three year deal for Peter Horne.
That shows how highly the club think about him. He may not quite cut it at international level, but he is a very very good club player where his versatility really makes him stand out.
Just a few more forwards now and the Glasgow squad is almost there.

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread XV Men Chasing An Egg?!
It's a good point about Bresler. What on Earth has happened to him?? He was exactly the sort of physically reckless thug we needed at the heart of the pack.
Gilchrist is nowhere at the moment, and it's quite right that he's benching behind Toolis and MacKenzie. Both have been better than him this season.
The front row will clearly struggle, but otherwise the team is pretty handy. Bryce over Kinghorn is wrong, but Kinghorn has played a lot of rugby this season so perhaps it's a case of rotation. Tovey has been poor recently so it's probably right that Weir be given a start, and I'm happy that SH-C is being given a chance at 9. Scotland needs one of these Edinburgh 9s to really step up to the plate. With Frodo injured, Price short of grey matter and Pyrgos short on confidence, a really strong (and overdue) run of form from SH-C would be just the ticket.
Someone also needs to light a fire under Cornell Du Preez!

This is good business, and having a player comfortable at 10 and 12 is really helpful. I really like Horne as a player, he's a proper rugby player who keeps his head up and his eyes open. I'd also say that whilst he probably isn't 1st XV material at international level, I'd have him on the bench ahead of Duncan Weir!

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread XV Men Chasing An Egg?!
Hodge really doesn't rate Rory Scholes does he?! So odd how little gametime he's had given how highly the Ulster fans spoke of him, and he had pretty decent stats from his last season with Ulster.
I wonder if he has a pretty poor opinion of Alan Solomons now, as I'm assuming it was he who persuaded Scholes to join us and told him he'd be competing for the 15 shirt, only to see little gametime under him before he promptly left the club.
It would be nice to see Alex Northam get himself fit and get some opportunities in the side, given the awful time he's had will injury and illness since joining.

Not available due to injury: Sam Johnson (ankle), Pat MacArthur (head), Peter Murchie (hamstring), Greg Peterson (shoulder) and Leonardo Sarto (shoulder).
That is a much better looking team out from Glasgow. Bennett back from Scotland, Favaro from Italy and Horne back from injury. The new guy Brandon Thompson hopefully able to inject a bit of pace into the line from full back.
Hopefully we can give Ulster a bit of a run for their money wiht these guys.

That's a handy Glasgow team with a nice balance to it. I think Hughes ahead of Lamont would improve it, but I'm sure Sean will throw everything into it.

Just a thought on Strauss moving on. Ally Miller was getting good reviews for London Scots early in the season. Is he tied to Glasgow or Edinburgh?

He is an academy player, so I am not sure that he is tied to anyone. He has played well down in London, but i wonder if he is really big enough to be a ball carrier at full Pro level. If he is, he certainly needs to fill out a lot more.
Glasgow need a more complete replacement for JS than he would offer. There is promise there though and one of the teams might take a punt on him, or he could spend another year down in Richmond putting on some more beef.

Or do you mean "quote, Ian"?

Leinster's defensive line speed is phenomenal. Wee Duncy needs to try a couple of wee chips over the top

Tom Brown celebrates his new contract by dropping the ball with the line begging...
What a c0ck up, after such great work by Dean.

Apparently Brown took a heavy knock before that, hence him taking a knee - I thought that was simply him in disbelief after dropping the egg!
Brown's still on the pitch for 2nd half so the knock can't have been too heavy.
Kinghorn on for Brown.

I'm sorry but Dean and Brown just are bang average players. Dean isn't a threat and as for Brown ....
The forwards are doing really well and are knocking their nuts off and the backs are just awful.
