If you read all the press releases about him there was nothing about him being SQ and it was him that made reference to his father.
He made a pretty good debut last weekend and we definitely need another 10/15 type player even if Hastings does arrive, so it will be interesting to see if he does stay on. At the moment he is only here till the end of the season.
I don't have any great expectations about Glasgow's chances against the Spreys and in truth I think our play off chances are gone. Just looking for a better performance and very keen to see how a few of the younsters get on, Matt Smith and Jamie Bhatti in particular.
This could be Junior's chance to stake a claim for a contract next season and maybe to the new winger Ratu. They may both get a few games over the next few weekends as the venerable Sean is struggling to string any run of games together now.
There is not really any pressure of expectation on Glasgow for this game and it will be interesting to see if that improves or makes their performances worse.
As did Alan Dell so I can't imagine having playing for them precludes Thompson from being SQ (unless Dell is the new Dave Hilton..)
When Dell played apparently the U20s were not the designated second team, the change is more recent than that. I am not an expert on the rules, but there was a lot of discussion about this on the Glasgow forum and that seemed to be the consensus.

That is very true!
Is it even mathematically possible for us to overtake you? Especially after we no doubt lose to the Blues tonight?
Maths or not, it is not going to happen. I imagine that might be all the motivation the Glasgow players need to get the finger out!

Interesting, I'm sure if he's any good that the SRU will be looking in to that carefully. The idea of changing your designated second team around leaves room for argument I would think as I'm sure there is currently an 'Emerging Springbok' team which would presumably include players older than U20s? I'm guessing Scotland's designated second team
is still Scotland A despite them not having any fixtures, or is it now the 7s? Obviously playing for any country's 7s team ties you to that nation now but I'm not sure the U20s can be so clear cut.

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread XV Men Chasing An Egg?!
Ah, this takes me back. [Puffs on pipe, rocks chair] I remember it like it was yesterday... it was the spring of 2012, the name 'Shingler' was on everyone's lips, and this was all orange groves, far as the eye can see. We hadn't heard of 'Dapper Laughs', and Donald Trump was just a b***end with a permatan.
The rules for tying a player to a particular nation are both simple and complex:
A player is tied to a nation if he plays for that country's senior team, its sevens team, or its designated 'next senior' team. So Scotland have the men's senior team, the sevens team, and Scotland A - playing for any of them will tie a player to Scotland.
The exception to that rule is where the designated next senior team is that country's U20 team - in those circumstances, the player is only tied if he played in a U20 match against another U20 team which is that country's 'next senior' team. Get it?
No? Ok, Steve Shingler wasn't tied when he played for Wales U20 against Scotland U20 (as Scotland use Scotland A) but he was tied when he played against France U20.
This will link you to World Rugby's record of 'next senior' teams:
http://www.worldrugby.org/regulations/next-senior-representative-team
You'll see that in 2015, South Africa's 'next senior' team was South Africa U20. In 2015, Thompson's five caps were against Argentina, Italy, Samoa, Australia, and England. Italy's U20 team is designated, so I think that ties Thompson to South Africa...

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread XV Men Chasing An Egg?!
Where it all gets a little bit hilarious is that Alan Dell played for South Africa U20s in the 2012 U20 tournament - their U20 became the designated next senior team on 4 June 2012, which was the first day of that tournament. In that tournament, Dell also played against Italy, but in 2012 Italy's designated team was 'Italia Emergenti', which is apparently different from the U20s. That means that Dell isn't tied to South Africa, but Thompson is.

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread XV Men Chasing An Egg?!
It is all a bit of a lottery and I am not sure anyone should be getting tied in at U20 level. A lot of the players, like Shingler before him, who genuinely had a Scottish mother, probably don't even realise they have tied themselves.
The real sting in the tail for Shingler is that Wales have now changed their designation and no longer use the U20s. The reason being that to many players (usually English based with Welsh eligibility) would not play for them as they wanted to keep options open.
Maybe if the residency issues get sorted out, then this will as well. I would personally not consider the U20s a senior team.

Bit of a sliding door moment for him, which did not end well and did seem to effect him badly as a player for some time afterwards. An incident that no-one, player SRU or WRU came out of very well.
Could have been a contender!

This has got to be a 10 point wind though, some sensible play in the second half and Edinburgh can keep them pinned down their end.
Looking forward to seeing what Kinghorn can do at FH and if Bryce can play TH!

Just watching the highlights of the All Blacks v Edinburgh game from the 1980s.
Godness me, Edinburgh had some good players back then. The speed of the rucking back them was phenomenal. It was not a lot of fun at the bottom of those rucks though, you used to get stamped all over.

Cockers cant arrive quickly enough. Lack of leadership and nous. toveys kicking from hand in the second half was mince. Why did Bradbury stay on when he was clearly injured?
Lets hope Cockers clears out some of the dross.

The decision to go for goal at the end really annoys me - if we'd kicked to the corner we would have had 4 minutes camped on their line.
It was a very difficult kick which took over a minute of time up, then we had to play from our own half.
One of many stupid decisions!
