Toulon are hot favourites to sign JP Pietersen as well.
They've lost a few back three players, and Vincent Clerc is 36, but have already signed Ashton and Hugo Bonneval. Semi Radradra switching codes with them too.
Boudjellal isn't renowned for putting squad balance ahead of a big name though...

They've already signed Luke McAlister which you'd guess is their best effort at replacing Giteau as a second five-eighth.
Fekitoa, Nonu and Bastareaud would put a lot of money and power in the midfield. Toulon's slight renaissance this season came with Cockerill getting them to go back to a basic but very physical game plan. Those three centres would certainly bring that physicality.
Toulon still need to sort their front row out before worrying about anything else.

Safe as about any under the high ball, one of the best full backs around positionally, good tactical kicking game, strong tackler.
It seems a long time ago that he was an exciting winger with good footwork and pace to burn. That I'll agree! Sadly a mixture of injuries and conservative game plans seem to have stunted his growth as a running back three player. He is still a solid finisher when given chances though.
He's a much better player than many now give him credit for. His goal kicking isn't something to be dismissed either.
I'd be interested to see how moving back to wing affected his running play, I think it would be a positive move for him.
All that said I think he would need to take a significant pay cut to be a good investment for a Prem side. Especially when he'll be away for international windows.

I don't think Pietersen would be much of a loss for Tigers IMO. Free up more of the cap though you need to spend some, not just get rid of players!
I'd laugh if Toulon do sign him up.
Ashton is a good signing for Toulon though. He's not a likable figure but as a finisher at club level I don't think there is anyone better.
Also defensively he's been protected in a good system.
Going to be tough to replace Ashton. Someone will need to fill the try gaps.

Finn Russell will have one more season at Glasgow before joining up with big VC at montpellier...

Interesting move for Russell. For Scotland (so long as he plays enough in France, but not too much) it could be a really good move, as right now they seem to be struggling to develop any back-up to him. This will free up a starting spot for someone to press their challenge.

Adam Hastings immediatly springs to mind. He is currently playing at Glasgow and will have a chance to get some game time this season and get up to speed with how Rennie wants to play the game.
As for Russell he's got Aaron Cruden to learn from and compete with at Montpellier. So he'll obviously be in a great position to learn and develop from one of the best 10s in the world without getting flogged in the Top14.

Could work really well, and just about perfect in terms of succession planning - albeit dependent on Hastings showing he has what it takes.

Wonder if Glasgow will chase the Wasps Scottish U20 10 Eastgate?
Looked alright.
Also with Umaga getting all the press space for Wasps, Eastgate might be tempted to look elsewhere.

I think with Hastings being no.2 next season and potentially no.1 the season after, it might not make a huge amount of sense to sign up another young 10, given Hastings is only 21. If the SRU want Eastgate to get game time then Edinburgh would make far more sense, because if he can put his boots on the right feet and has some ability then he's the equal of or better than our current options at standoff.

Probably be a decent career move for him to go to either of the Scottish Pro clubs, as both are light on FHs. It will always be hard for a young FH to break into a club like Wasps, who already have some pretty decent options and the cheque book to add to them if required. Eastgate had a very decent JWC and Scottish fans will be very interested in his development.

Certainly think so Tigers fans are going OTT about it.
Although i seem to be in the minority that thought Mauger had to go and couldn't handle top of the tier NH rugby.

More to the point, Eastgate will feel really talented after a fortnight of watching Duncan Weir throw intercept passes.EWT Spoons wrote:Welly wrote:Wonder if Glasgow will chase the Wasps Scottish U20 10 Eastgate?

Either a juggernaut or a speed merchant. Shouldn't be to hard to find. If it's someone with a bit of versatility even better. JPP Was only ever good he never wowed and must have been on a good deal of cash.

Yep. Though I was hoping Holmes would offer us try scoring speed out wide it never hurts to have loads of speed in the back three. There's some yoing guys around who we've been linked with who I'd be happy if we signed (Earle, Morris someone like that). They'd be considerably cheaper and free up some cap for the other additions we need.

Sale sign James O'Connor, he's not the superstar he was, and hadn't fulfilled his massive potential. But still that's impressive!

Potentially a great signing. Diamond got Cips firing again. If O'Connor goes the same way then he'll be a phenomenal signing. If it's not working then McGinty can be solid and Sale can grind out wins. As long as they reinforce their tight five.

That relies on JOC taking his head out of his arse.
Honestly think they have signed too many back rowers not enough quality Tight 5 players.
The pack looks extremely lightweight to me.

Diamond forcibly removed Cipriani's head in a similar circumstance.
I think the backrow signings will help them. Ross and Strauss will give them go forward they badly need particularly combining with de Klerk. Agree with you though, they need some big and horrible front five players to get the set pieces and toght game going or they'll not have the possession to make the most of these signings.

Squad signing by the looks of it.
Needed as we only have 3/4 centres 2 of which have pretty bad injury record.

He has had his share of injury issues, but a good squad filler, and I think he has played everywhere from 10-15.

I don't mind a bit of an injury record if they are not expected to be 23 players.
When you look at the squad on the whole we needed to sign a senior LV cup/A league type player IMO who if needs be can hold the fort during internationals.

An experienced utility player was needed for a squad role so it's a decent signing. Hopefully a couple more to follow.

Mckenzie would be amazing but sadly can't see it happening. Another lock and a better hooker would both be useful too.

Re: Silly Season Transfer Rumours 16/17
Funny that just 3 years ago Quins had three hookers in and around the England squad. Now admittedly Dave Ward was merely in a purple patch, and was at a stage in his career where he had reached his ceiling - but there must have been hope that at least one of Gray or Buchanan would have really kicked on.

There was hope from more than just Quins fans about Gray and Buchanan to be fair. Once upon a time quite a few thought that Gray could be the solid set-piece hooker with some attacking game and that Buchanan had the sort of aggression England were missing at hooker.

Sadly I think we're resigned to them just being good club players now. Grey seems to have gone backwards and Buchanan while physical is pants at throwing. Wards becoming more of a 7 now as well
