Re: SURREY VS WARWICKSHIRE SPECSAVERS COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
Thanks, JimBob.
In answer to your question - yes, I think son of boris will miss out.
Warks have named a 13 man squad which includes an accountancy firm (Grant Thornton ) but only one spinner (our old enemy Jeetan Patel). No place for their leggie Josh Poysden who's been involved with the Lions and so shouldn't be a total mug - that suggests the Bears don't see the pitch being a spinner's delight. On that basis, no need for us to go with Ansari assuming that Batty plays.
Probably a shoot out then between Dernbach and Meaker for the last place although it's just possible that one of the Currans could be rested instead. I'll plump for Meaks again being the one serving drinks.
From their match at the Oval, Warks have dropped Sam Hain (tipped for the top at one time by v2 poster Hoggy Bear and obviously given the of death in the process) and called up young Matthew Lamb. Expect that Chichester is already hoping to include ''Lamb to the Slaughter'' in a post this weekend.
Opener Westwood returns to the Warks' squad having missed the Oval match with injury. Expect him to play with Mellor and Thornton probably on the bench. Warks have several good to very good players but just haven't found any team form so far - hopefully, that will continue for a few more days

Agree with likely team. Especially as Meaker didn't make a huge impression in the 2nd XI match against Hants.
I would still expect Hain to come good - obviously going through a bad patch at the moment.

David 'Bumble' Lloyd recounting the advice he was given upon becoming Lancs captain in the early 1970s from Cyril Washbrook who was Lancs' first professional captain twenty years earlier:
''You have two choices on winning the toss. Bat or think about it and then bat.''
Gareth Batty as the away captain can these days opt to do away with the toss and bowl. I suspect that would be young man Olly's choice on this grey and overcast day although the veteran Cyril would not have approved. I'm still thinking about it!
Out now. Back late afternoon.

You've called it pretty bang on Guildford - we've looked up not down and got it wrong not going for a toss. You only have to look at the photo the Warwickshire Twitter account posted of the pitch to see its a batting paradise - not a spot of grass in sight

Bowling first: poor decision by Warks captain in first match; poor decision by Surrey captain in this match.
Could be looking at 500+ total unless we start taking wickets and reducing scoring rate.

We're just about clinging onto hope by picking up a few wickets - I'd like Batty to have a bowl after tea, just for a bit of variety

Cheers, Olly.
Back your batsmen - that's my view and always has been.
Batty's decision also means (assuming we don't have to follow on!) that Patel will be bowling 4th dig and Surrey should be well aware of what he can do.

Hi JimBob - if he has, I think he'll be straight off to England for the Ireland ODIs and then the Champions Trophy. Olly knows more about international timetables than me but I don't reckon we'll see him playing for Surrey before late June / early July.

Re: SURREY VS WARWICKSHIRE SPECSAVERS COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
Surrey have reined Warks back a little, later in the day with score now 292 - 6. (At one point Warks were 223 - 2.) Bad light has just stopped play. Footitt finally removes Westwood for 153.
Tom Curran with 3 wickets (although expensive). Two wickets for Footitt. Sam Curran quite economical with 1 - 53 off 22 overs.

IIRC I read an interview, on possibly BBC Sport, where Roy said he is back from the IPL for the Ireland ODI and he has the option of going back to the IPL after that, but seen as he isn't playing at the moment he is likely to stay and play some games for Surrey in preparation for the CT. He referred to One Day games for Surrey, but you should see him for a bit pre CT if his plans don't change.

Cheers for that, JD.
As the Corporal says, we pulled things back late on but still not a great day.
PS Re my first post on this thread; although Javid wasn't originally named in the Warks squad, he was chosen to play ahead of Lamb. Sorry, Chichester - no ''Lamb to the Slaughter'' posts!
PPS Olly - thanks for the youtube link. Will try and make use of that tomorrow.

Mr Dizzle is correct here - it's looking likely we'll have Roy for three one day cup games between the Ireland ODIs and the champions trophy - as for some bizarre reason his IPL team continue to pick Dwayne Smith ahead of him
Managed to claw ourselves to a position where we have a shot at getting back into the game (if we bowl them out for 350 or under) - Batty only bowls two overs in the day..................thoughts?

Way back in the days of Sunday League 40 over games on BBC2, here's a John Arlott commentary classic. Tim Lamb opened the bowling for Middx and his first couple of overs went for plenty. JA said: 'Arrrrrrr! Now we have a bowling change. [Middx captain] has decided he can no longer afford Lamb as a luxury ... ... not even with mint sauce.'
Meanwhile, I'm not happy Surrey inserted (didn't Norah remember what happened when Bell did the same in the reverse fixture two weeks ago??) but reckon we edged the first day with those late wickets provided the pitch stays as good as it appears to have been today.

Surprisingly, the report on Surrey's own website queries Batty's decision to insert. I suspect it's by a freelancer who has already been given his last pay cheque although I've told Surrey's communications chief to congratulate him and sign him up for the season!

Re: SURREY VS WARWICKSHIRE SPECSAVERS COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
Slightly irritating last wicket partnership featuring my man Ronnie but TC brings that to an end by getting Hannon-Dalby. 332 all out - all in all, an excellent hour's work.
Olly - many thanks for the link. Grateful if you could supply each day for the usual pencil and paper users like me! I currently have the house to myself, a large mug of coffee and the live stream - it may seem sad but it's bliss to me!

The last 8 Warks wickets fell for hardly more than 100 - so that's a great recovery by the Surrey bowlers.
Surrey 38 - 1 and already the spinner is on. Judging by the stream (thanks Olly!) the sun is shining brightly.

51/1 at lunch - Guildford's boy Ronnie was getting it to swing with the new rock, but Stoneman and now Borthwick seem to have negotiated it and have picked up the scoring. Short boundary one side helps!
Will miss this afternoon...no more stream for me today - go well chaps

Olly - you playing cricket or watching football? What ever, go well too.
Like the Corporal, I thought it seemed bright. Did wonder if that was the effect of the live stream but the BBC report confirms it's a sunny day there.
Anyway, our morning by a country mile. Now to make it count ....

Doing well so far this afternoon. 100 up and a half-century for Rocky. Don't want to get ahead of ourselves but atm there's hope of 5 batting points for JimBob.
Do need a decent 1st innings lead though. Don't want too many to chase with Patel bowling 4th dig.

182/2 off 45 overs.
JimBob - we're nicely up with the rate atm. Can we keep going and hold onto some of our wickets? Too early to say but I'm happy with where we are now.

Shucks! 3 tidy enough overs of off spin from Javid and he's replaced by Ronnie.
Darned good currently but if one of these goes, Patel will probably only have to look at Sibley and we'll be 4 down.

...but with Sibley facing Warks sensibly continue with Patel. Sibley 7 off 44 deliveries - but sudden burst of scoring off Barker brings score up to 299 -3 at the close. Sounds like two fabulous innings' by Stoneman and Sanga Scoring rate slowed down with Sibley, but at least they have already put on 32.
Excellent day for Surrey, with hopefully several more batting points to come tomorrow.

Corporal - sound comments although you can put the drinks on my bar tab if we get 5 batting points from here! Feel Sibley has done for that. Nonetheless, an extremely good day and great turnaround from when Warks were in the driving seat on 223/2 yesterday.

Re: SURREY VS WARWICKSHIRE SPECSAVERS COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
George Dobell raising suggestions of an innings victory for Surrey in his day 2 cricinfo report.
That's a possibility but we shouldn't get carried away.
From our current 299/3, we could top 500 by tea (especially if Sanga fires) and have a lead of 170+. Follow that up with a few more runs and a couple of Warks wickets before stumps and it's just about the ideal Surrey day with the Bears facing down the barrel.
However, back to where we are now. 33 behind. If we lose two wickets getting to parity, our first innings lead might turn out to be less than 50 (Foakes and Sam Curran haven't hit any batting form so far). Such a slender lead would worry me with Patel bowling at us 4th dig.
Anyway, beautifully poised. Bring on moving day, eh Carlos!
