You can never have too many quality attacking options - it seems they have the cash to splash in other areas anyways, so why not.

A fast winger is probably the number one priority for the squad right now other than a new centre back. We need more pace in the squad desperately as Mane is the only real player capable of picking up real speed and Salah is rapid and would be perfect as either back up to Mane or playing on the opposite side and allowing Coutinho to drop into centre midfield.
Assuming Liverpool continue to play the same system as last year, Lallana is now primarily a midfielder and it would be a mistake to move him further up again and I can see Coutinho also dropping deeper much more often next year, particularly against sides that park the bus. We're only able to do that with able deputies which is currently lacking. Often our only attacking options from he bench ended up being Ben Woodburn which isn't enough.
That said, happy for the club to not be held to ransom, there are other players available. Suspect Liverpool will be backing off in the hope that Salah then tries to force the move through.

Sure but from the point of view they missed his pace and he's going to vanish for a period next season, would make more sense to look at options that aren't also likely to vanish.

Well not next season, Africa Cup of Nations is only every two years, but I agree, ideally the club would be looking at targets that don't also play for African nations and we end up missing two players who offer something unique to the squad. Targets wise though, it's difficult to think of other players of Salah's quality that would be available to Liverpool at that price so I suppose the one month he and Mane are missing for is a sacrifice worth taking.

Liverpool were 5 points off Chelsea start of Jan, 13 points off start of Feb. Cantjust write off a month.

There was a lot more to that period of poor form than Mane being missing though to be fair. It was absolutely dreadful and having Mane available would have been better but not season saving.

Don't want to see the club held to ransom either. However, would it be more desirable to miss out on all your primary transfer targets because you never meet asking price? Think in some scenarios they need to just take the hit and pay asking price.(Which it seems they look set to do with VVD to be fair). Pick your battles and all that.
As for Salah, pretty much what Crimey said in regards to type of player. Outside Mane our only genuinely wide players are still young and not first team quality (Ojo and Wilson spring to mind).

You're in the Champions league and people know you have money to spend.
You either get held to ransom on proven ability or live on a prayer hoping unknowns come off

Not really sure why they are after Salah when he's a Right Wing like Mane. Why not go for someone who's naturally a left winger. Arda Turan is up for sale aswell id imagine he'd be cheaper & probably better.

I'd never say too restricted to position. There's very few who can only play one side. I'd certainly see both being able to play either side the way Klopp plays.

Plus he is left footed. Alot of his goal scoring threat obviously comes from cutting in from the right onto his left, but surely he could play down the left flank and cross the ball...

But all you have in the box is Firmino more often then not who's a midget. Unless Origi plays or Sturridge is fit for 5 out of 38 games.
Im sure he could probably play LW but why get someone in who has to get used to it. Seems a strange move really.

Getting a better forward would be my top priority.
If you have 60m to spend on a CB, why not chuck in a cheeky bid for Aubameyang

Re: Summer Transfer Window 2017 Thread
Agree with Dolph that talking about LW and RW seems a little bit too FIFA for my liking, good footballers can adjust. Klopp in particular has shown this plenty of times at Liverpool. Pushing Lallana into central midfield, making Firmino a striker, playing Lucas in central defence, turning Milner into a left back etc. etc. I'm sure moving Salah to left wing isn't a huge deal.
I would suspect that we'd be more likely to play Mane on the left wing anyway if both were playing as he is naturally right footed, or at least good enough with his right foot that you can't really draw a distinction.
I think drawing a large distinction between left wing and right wing is pretty pointless when Liverpool play with such a fluid front line, very rarely do they stick to structured positions, even when defending.

I don't think there's any chance of getting Aubameyang. If he leaves Dortmund, it will surely be for a better side not a team that hasn't competed in Europe for nearly a decade. Okay Liverpool have the money, the manager and the history, but for a player of his age, you'd have thought competing at the highest level will take precedent and other sides would be happy to offer that.

Worst you can do is bid.
Competition is supposedly PSG who have struggled to make a big impact in Europe themselves.

Since 2010, they have made the quarter finals of the Champions League four times and the R16 once. Liverpool were in the competition once and got knocked out in the group stages. They hardly compare. PSG have also won the league four times in that same period and came second twice. Liverpool has finished 6th, 8th, 7th, 2nd, 6th, 8th and 4th. I get that we want to show ambition, but I'm not sure chasing unlikely targets is going to help the club or it's image.

Turan is six years older, would likely be on higher wages and doesn't offer the pace which is a major reason for this transfer. Weird player to pick out as an alternative.

Older is a fair point
He's on 85k a week in Spain & Mo is about 70-75k so hardly a big difference due to the tax laws in Spain.
Sure he's not as fast as Salah or Mane but he's hardly slow.
It's not really a strange alternative to offer up a better player for less then Salah.

I just don't think Turan offers anything much different than we have from the current players at the club and he's not part of the club's ideals to sign younger players.

Late to the party but 60m for a CB? That's what it would have cost to get Ferdinand/Nesta in their prime and he definitely isn't them

No point comparing historical transfer fees, given how the game has financially moved on. One of the top CB's in the country, and only 25. CB's usually enter their prime in their early 30's, so Liverpool looking at possibly five to seven good years of service. Stones went for £47.5m & VVD is superior in nearly every department.

United apparently had 52m turned down for morata. Real want closer to 80m for him. Now thought to be looking toward belotti instead. Correct me if im wrong but from what ive read belotti has a release clause of 100m that the torino chairman insists needs to be paid
Also nainngolan has refused to rule out apparent interest of a move to united

The fees are getting ridiculous now. Super rich chairmen, the new TV deal and some clubs paying way over the odds for players have pushed transfers to new levels of insanity.
65-75 million now being touted for Van Dijk. To be honest would rather not have him for that fee.

Southampton know Liverpool really want Van Dijk but he's got long enough left on his contract that they can just keep going higher every time Liverpool show they're willing to spend more. If they're not going to accept around £50 million, think it's best just to walk away. Maybe Van Dijk will put in a transfer request and force Southampton's hand.

To be honest, I don't feel Salah and Van Dijk fall into the world class, must sign at all costs category. If the clubs keep pushing up the price move to another player on your short list.
Not like Ronaldo/Bale types where you know by not signing them you will be likely getting a player of lesser quality (Because there aren't really any better in that position). Neither in that top handful of players in their respective positions who you would pay almost any price for.

Got to question van Dijk's career motivations if he snubs a move to Manchester City and ends up at a club like Liverpool. Liverpool realistically aren't going to be winning trophies. And in all likeness this champion league stop won't be coming again in 2018-19

By the looks of that statement, after the PL or other authority told them a ban was incoming unless they stuck their tails firmly between their legs. What an embarrassment for LFC

Unhappy to have missed out on Van Dijk. Happy to have avoided paying 75 million for him. Infuriated at the amateur showing from the club in their transfer dealings! An absolute embarrassment.
If we got De Vrij for the 25/30 being touted I would be happy enough though. Van Dijk better in my eyes but De Vrij would still be a starter for us.
