It was always likely to be extended anyway.

Serves the Tories right for coasting and arguing on one issue.

Still, she has the most seats after avoiding debates and repeating 'strong and stable' ad nauseam. Great trolling.

She has no majority and no viable partners.

She's toast and a new leader will call a general election.

Corbyn would be wise to try and form a coalition, Tories can hardly do worse given another swing.

knew you would say that. Its different being snp leader to tory leader. Tories are biggest party in the uk, how could their leader not be an mp? that would mean having a 2nd leader to answer questions at PM questions. It would be far too chaotic would not lead to stability and the leader of the tories in Westminster would oust any other leader who wasn't an mp.

Imagine having a party where the prime minister was not the leader of the party. It would make the party a laughing stock.

Imagine if ruth Davidson who was not an mp had the power to fire the prime minister...

how could the prime minister (if the tories are the largest) not be the leader of the party? it would never work having ruth Davidson as leader because shes not an mp.

Worth pointing that a hung parliament under the current prediction is almost certainly leading to a new GE under which Ruth could stand.

Also worth caveating that a major loss for May still has the Tories holding as many seats as the next 3 biggest parties. So probably worth tempering the celebrations slightly

Ffs, tied 10th according to the exit poll. Not going to help being stuck behind the Welsh, losing ground on the leaders.

If ruth does become an mp then yes she could be leader. I think it is their best option to be honest. A former soldier in the Army and very experienced.

no I am pretty sure if there is no majority then the options are a new election or a minority government.

No, a government can attempt to function as a minority if they so choose but a vote of no confidence sends us to a GE I think

Sorry I was thinking from a fixed term act perspective. Did they repeal before calling a new election or did they override it with a substantial majority.

even if it is wrong and the tories get 330 seats (16 more than the poll) or even 340 seats that is still a horrible result considering they were on schedule to get a 100 seat landslide only 4 weeks ago.

Fixed Term Act still allows an election before 5 years if 2/3 of mps vote in favour of it in the commons.

You can override it with a majority it seems but I imagine it has contingencies for hung parliament and minority governments.

I'm with Truss though, this exit poll doesn't figure in postal votes and supposedly has 76 on the brink of going either way. Given this is on the very high end of optimistic Labour hopes, it's probably a reasonable guess Labour won most of those close calls in the exit poll.

Guess is a Tory majority, but not far off what it was 2 years ago.

May gone by years end regardless.
