So it's confirmed.....mayweather vs Conor McGregor.
The lay public and mostly MMA fans will be most enthused by this fight. I think it's the start of a WWE style entertainment farce. People will be going crazy on social media about the legitimacy of this fight and how it's the greatest thing to ever happen. The reality is that it is chalk and cheese fighting......might as well pair Andy Murray up with Freddy flintoff for the WBA belt. The spanner in the works could be mayweather along lay off and age. Is this a horrendous scam fight or should we be excited that boxing is reaching even more platforms?

I remember those halcyon days when there were only two champions per division........You knew most of the champions names and when one defended you felt like it meant something and history was in the offering.......The adrenalin would flow and the excitement would kick in....

Regardless of what you feel about the fight, im in the complete mismatch camp; this is man who has become the biggest grossing UFC star...has 4 of the 6 highest PPV in the history of said sport...and did what the likes of Pacman, Khan, Golovkin, and numerous others have failed to do in past 2 years and bring Mayweather out of retirement.

I can appreciate the fact plenty of you turn your nose up at the very idea of MMA and believe its not the pure sport that boxing is....but dont be ignorant of the fact that McGregor has changed the game of MMA both for himself and other fighters moving forward. The mans business acumen is 2nd to none....an idiot he is far from.

floyds a very clever man and astute money maker. He really doesn't seem to care what people think of his methods of making money. As far as he is concerned the fans don't mean sh1t as none of them will help him should his health suffer. So I suppose if he is going to come out of retirement to earn stupendous amounts of money tickling casuals bums then I guess he has the prerogative to do so. Not that he probably really cares but for purist fans there is going to be some loss of respect. The other alternative is fight and keep fighting harder fights and go out on 4 or 5 losses like eubank snr or RJJ dwindle your credibility down to a carrot. I don't know the right answers to any of this but he has and is doing himself plenty of favours and isn't too fussed about leading the sport up the garden path.

You seem to be giving him all the accolades for Dana White selling him.

Agree fully Ozzy. He's the biggest name in combat sports. Floyd only sells because of his undefeated record and people pay to hopefully see him lose.

McGregor has haters looking him to lose too, but he has a fan friendly style and people love watching him fight.

He doesn't wrestle. He beats the sh1t out of fighters, with his superior strike set.

And yes to a degree Katie Price is intelligent...she saw people lapped up her name and thus used to to push a brand. Anyone who has so little about her other than marrying different celebs has to have some degree of intellect to ensure 20 years later they are still relevant and making obscene amounts of money

Hammer - How much UFC or MMA do you follow in general? If you think Dana was the mastermind behind Conor then id hazard a guess at little. Conor has put himself where he is..not Dana and the fact that UFC is willing to allow him all the manouverability in the world shows that they know it too. Yes UFC has marketed him...but its Conors persona...wit and fighting style which has seen him become the crossover star he is.

What makes it a joke sport Truss? This lazy idea that they roll about on the floor at all times is so dated. The last major UFC PPV had just 2 of 14 fights where significant time was spent on the ground wrestling..of the others 3 fights had submission finishes (in itself an incredibly skilled art) and the rest were striking KO's/TKO's.

Like i said MMA may not tickle your fancy but dont berate a sport which you obviously no little about. Boxing could do worse than look at the monthlu PPV/ 3 weekends free fight card model run by UFC...could also look at the matchmaking that goes into it...oh and also the rankings and 1 belt system

I dont mind MMA but its not boxing. I dont like the ground game. I appreciate its a skill or form of martial arts....but I prefer the beautiful sweet science of Boxing.

More to the point - Floyd will embarrass McGregor - this fight is genuinely pointless - even if Floyd is 3 years out the ring and 40. Still a mismatch

It's the ground game that is the problem imo. Kickboxing I thought was much more skilful, properly executed attacks and masterful defence. Take a look at the old pros benny the jet etc. Although at times it was a joke I even think K1 was miles and miles better than MMA ground fights.

Conor might bring a bit more than the die hard Gracie-type fighters but not that much by any stretch of the imagination.

Have to admit, the built up is hilarious already.

Conor came well-dressed, exuded confidence and imo seemed to piss Floyd off a little in the stare down. Still not convinced it's gonna be anything other than a one-sided affair though.

It seems to be such a huge mismatch. Both get a lot of money and a lot of publicity. But what is Floyd going to do in the ring - if he knocks McGregor out in 30 seconds - people might then realise they have been conned out of a lot of money. But then again if he dances around McGregor without getting hit, and making McGregor look like a fool, then knocking him out in the fifth round - I suppose people will again twig they have been conned.

Some people say McGregor has something up his sleeve - or up his trouser leg. He will execute a knockout flying kick to Floyds head - saying he forgot where he was.

I hope the kick or elbow doesn't happen, I don't think it will. As ellerbe said, it would cost him a whole bunch of money. Not forgetting a charge for assault. Conor seems to look much bigger than Floyd. Does the MMA training make him more vicious and ferocious in the ring? He has to deal with any form of attack, does boxing then seem much easier hence boosting his confidence?

Floyd will only stop Conor if he exhausts himself.

McGregor will start patient and hope to land counter left. When that fails, he will go for broke and be stopped when fatigued. I think 8 rounds.

McGregor to win by TKO. He is already in Mayweather's head.

But that's what this is all about... the build-up, the showmanship, the pantomime. Might as well watch WWF. But the thing is.. people seem to like that stuff. Particularly the Americans.

You see a lot of comparisons to WWE. I have never watched that stuff so cant say I can claim to fully understand the comparisons but isnt WWE completely scripted?

There isnt really anything scripted about how McGregor fights and most of what he says. He probably does think about some of his lines as like any sportsman he would have to do some prep for pressers and conferences but its obvious most of it is off the cuff. As such I dont really get the WWE comparisons.

Don't think people are suggesting McGregor's fights are scripted, they're referring to the pantomime of the pre-fight roadshow... and specific to this 'fight' that it's seen by many as a 'show' for the public not a competitive 'fight'. Hence the WWF comparisons.

These are two guys who, irrespective of their undoubted talents have maxed out their earning potential and understand how to promote.

Anyone who thinks it's a competitive fight rather than a cynical money making exercise for both camps might see it differently I guess.

If McGregor has the gift of the gab - he should probably end up in acting. In the past several American sports stars transitioned into Hollywood acting.  Charisma, physique, gift of the gab, a good memory are the starting points. There is also a parallel in terms of the episodic nature of fights and film-making.
