Joke fights here we come!!
First topic message reminder :
So it's confirmed.....mayweather vs Conor McGregor.
The lay public and mostly MMA fans will be most enthused by this fight. I think it's the start of a WWE style entertainment farce. People will be going crazy on social media about the legitimacy of this fight and how it's the greatest thing to ever happen. The reality is that it is chalk and cheese fighting......might as well pair Andy Murray up with Freddy flintoff for the WBA belt. The spanner in the works could be mayweather along lay off and age. Is this a horrendous scam fight or should we be excited that boxing is reaching even more platforms?

I'm plumping for sad.
On the plus side, we have some mma fans (or at least mcgregor fans) showing some interest in boxing, though I suspect it may be short lived.

McGregor is considered in the UFC rankings to be the second best pound for pound fighter in the world after Demetrius Johnson. Those rankings are a bit wishy washy though as those two guys are different weight classes and will probably never fight each other.

He's not a good boxer and would struggle against domestic level opponents let alone the best in the world, it's quite sad that people who have no real experience of watching boxing are giving him a chance.
Wow is that how pound for pound works, I never knew.

UFC is a different sport than boxing. Doesn't matter where he is p4p. Also every man and his dog knows Jon Jones is the best fighter in MMA.
I'm an Irish man and very proud of McGregor and trust me, I'm a huge fan. However I am also a realist and don't live in fantasy land. Floyd wins very easily for sure!!

GGG v Alvarez is a massive contest for those already following the sport. I think Floyd v MgGregor will be sad if it's not competative and I firmly believe it won't be. If it turned into a genuinely decent contest it would be great for both sports and could start something.

Maybe for you but the fact that it is on track to break pay per view records suggests that to a lot of people it is neither.
The world has a lot of idiots with more money than sense.
1 Direction and The Spice Girls sold a lot of records, does that mean they made incredible music?

Anyone with any sense knows that Alvarez against Golovkin is THE fight this year not a WWEesque publicity stunt.

Purists will agree with you lion. However, this fight seems to appeal to the masses AND to "some" purists (on the basis of the best technical boxer of our time fighting). Most will tune in for the spectacle.

Its all about the spectacle, just like UFC 1 was too
Its a bit like Rocky v Apollo, a guy no one thinks can win against the best around. Its the ifs, buts and maybes and the intrigue and unknown that goes with it. It has the potential to be a car crash, it has the potential to shock but is most likely to be as dull as dishwater

It's a huge event. If boxing purists (normal guys on forums) don't want to watch, they don't have to. If the price is decent, I will tune in for sure.

It's the way sport is going. Multimedia marketing hype can sell snow to eskimoes. Some boxing purists forked out for bellew cleverly 2 on ppv, but the target was the crossover Saturday night crowd who bought into the grudge match angle. Eddie Hearn hasn't looked back since. Boxing fans aren't the target for big events any more... they know a good fight from a mismatch.... The Saturday night lad doesn't, why should he, and doesn't care.
This is the same sh*t taken a step further. Mayweather is boxing's greatest self publicist. Most of his fights since lightweight have been turgid from an entertainment perspective but he continues to get people to pay out for more. I'm sure even he can't believe the risk/reward ratio on this one.

It's not lucrative for the sport at all, it's potentially very damaging for the sport to see it made a mockery of.

Re: Joke fights here we come!!
Lucrative and farcical go hand in hand in boxing. This fight is projected to be the most lucrative in history. Go figure. It wouldnt be hppening if the money and the intesrest wasnt there.
The MMA brand is more likely to suffer as the chances are McGregor will lose convincingly and earn enough money at the same time to make retirement a plausible next step which would rob the UFC of its biggest attraction.
Mayweather is essentially an old and retired boxer. McGregor is a mixed martial artist. With the money on offer they would be daft to do anything other than make the fight. The real crime in Mayweathers career happened years ago with the Pacquaio fight being put off until it lost its significance. How and why Mayweather draws so much money in boxing is not always easy to understand. He is constistently in boring fights, his style doesnt entertain a wider audience and for the best part of ten years the prevailing mood after one of his fights was "that sucked". Generally he needs a dance partner with a large partisan support or favourable demographic to bounce off and McGregor fits that bill perfectly.
I couldnt imagine a worse opponent for McGregor in terms of offering a potentially exciting bout or a "punchers chance" of winning. A defensively minded, technically sound purist boxer with a penchant for 12 round dull decision wins.

I'm on this thread because the board is dead and this is what people want to discuss. That shows the interest levels. I'm interested in seeing others' opinions on it. I won't be watching, but I will pick up my phone in the morning to find out if I was as horribly wrong as I was with haye bellew.

To be fair H, most fighters don't put their fans first. It's just cause Mayweathers such a dk that it grates more :-).
I can't see this being good for boxing or MMA but there is a kind of morbid fascination around and it will (unfortunately) make a lot of money so chances are we'll see more crud like this in the future until we get the main event of GGG Vs HHH for the use of the name Triple (can't remember who put that up first but still makes me laugh)

I am only a casual boxing fan so not as well informed as others but I cant see how McGregor has a chance against Mayweather.
Mayweather is a very defensive boxer which will totally negate McGregor's game plan to destroy KO him within 4 rounds. 2 or 3 rounds after the 4th round and I feel Mayweather will KO McGregor.
I will not be paying to watch this fight.

billy, my POV is that Mayweather will struggle early on to do just that because he doesn't know what McGregor will bring to the table. In MMA he is unorthodox in many ways so how will that translate to boxing.
Dan Hardy did an interesting piece on BT about the adjustments Mayweather will need to make and the threat McGregor poses

As unpredictable as McGregor will be, Mayweather has got the experience to defend against him. McGregor has a punchers chance, without a doubt but I just cant see it myself. I just think that McGregor will throw everything at him in the first 4 rounds and feel Mayweather will be able to soak that up and will KO McGregor when he gets tired.

For those that pay to watch this i hope mcgregor's game plan has more to it than just being unorthodox.
2 grains of hope for McGregor fans. 1. Mayweather's age 2. Marcos Maidana - he threw boxing textbook out of the window and turned it into a street brawl... and made it Mayweather's most uncomfortable night since castillo 1. Best i can think of... and Maidana was still a world champion, and lost.

This is the only way I see McGregor winning. The only problem I have with this result is that there would be a rematch, then if Mayweather won, then a third fight.eirebilly wrote:As unpredictable as McGregor will be, Mayweather has got the experience to defend against him. If McGregor somehow won I can't see a rematch happening.
He would suddenly become the hottest property in boxing. Mayweather sells for the hope of seeing him beat in the main, once that has happened there wouldn't be as much money for a rematch.
McGregor would probably instead challenge someone like Canelo (if he gets through the GGG fight) to make similar money again for a legit title.

And people in the UK were talking about Freddie Flintoff making his boxing debut, doesn't mean it wasn't a bit of a farce.
Can't see how this is good for either sport really, if it is (and lets be honest, it will be) a success it opens the door to more crossover fights with another excuse for some of the top guys to sidestep worthy opponents and to potentially make more money.
On the other hand it could lead to some big mixed cards of MMA and Boxing.
Still think Conor gets beaten by most pro's and if you can argue at this being a mismatch of the highest order then you can't really critiscize any bout that goes ahead

I doubt someone like Katie Taylor who may be on the undercard would see the opportunity and platforms it may provide them as pointless

You must be new to boxing then because it as a sport has been a joke for decades between guys fighting bums to pad their records, fixed fights, dodgy promoters and so much more
This is professional sport, money plays a huge part of it and if it didn't matter the fight wouldn't be happening. If you don't like it there is plenty of amateur boxing around that won't raise your blood pressure and annoy your overly sensitive self

You haven't seen much amateurs then Marty ;-)
Some people wanna see it, some don't we'll see how the lay of the land is after it as there's no way this would have been turned down due to the money involved.

I mentioned UFC 1 on here before and to me it's a similar idea behind it. It was created to see which fighting style was best
That's where the intrigue comes in for me, what can a guy who has never boxed professionally do against a guy considered an all time great. We know he has punching power but can he translate it from the Octagon to the ring? How will he fight? Is Floyd as sharp as he once was? Is he hungry?
Unanswered questions=intrigue
