Joke fights here we come!!
First topic message reminder :
So it's confirmed.....mayweather vs Conor McGregor.
The lay public and mostly MMA fans will be most enthused by this fight. I think it's the start of a WWE style entertainment farce. People will be going crazy on social media about the legitimacy of this fight and how it's the greatest thing to ever happen. The reality is that it is chalk and cheese fighting......might as well pair Andy Murray up with Freddy flintoff for the WBA belt. The spanner in the works could be mayweather along lay off and age. Is this a horrendous scam fight or should we be excited that boxing is reaching even more platforms?

Only when he is facing bums making $50k a fight.
Floyd is the one that is giving him a red panty night.

Caught this on the news. MacGregor looks like a cancer patient.
Not that I care about this farce but does anyone know what he rehydrates to for UFC fights?

Around 170lbs on fight night so there will be a sizeable difference later in terms of reach, height and weight.

Can't believe Gervonta Davies missed weight.
Sloppy and unprofessional. Sadly he probably won't care and will likely win anyway.

I think being bigger than your opponent matters a lot more in ufc than boxing because in ufc there is the clinch and grappling and wrestling and takedowns where you can really use your size. In boxing there is none of that so size is not as important. But that's why ufc fighters try to cut as much weight as possible so they can pile it back on after the weigh in and be big

Bugger it.
I'm excited
Not building it up to be anything it isn't. It's emtertainment pure and simple.
Logic says Floyd wins with ease. But there's definitely an element of the unknown.

looks like conor lost due to gassing. Its a problem he has in the ufc as well.
what does this say about Floyd? tactical genius knowing conor would gas and a late ko or was it going to be a points decision if he never gassed?
does conor look good enough to be a pro?

he clearly did gas though. Floyd said it was his game plan to let conor gas, conor said he gassed, the commentators said he was gassing and you could clearly see he gassed. He would have lost the fight on points but I don't think the knock out is there if he never gassed.

Re: Joke fights here we come!!
Mayweather did what was expected..clinical and efficient.
McGregor did gas badly but the fact he isn't used to anything he faced tonight. The boxing purists will mock (Froch essentially did all night) but if they were being honest with themselves then he did better than I would imagine most thought he would do. Most of his punches were pitter patter from rounds 4 onwards but I will say one thing, he landed far more than I thought he would...especially that rangy straight right which even caught Mayweather by surprise at times...
Hopefully Mayweather steps away for good now, unless he fancies jumping into the octogan & McGregor goes back to the UFC and creates a real legacy over the next couple of years.
Roll on next month now for Canelo vs GGG...the real most significant fight this year!

I'm not disputing he gassed but it isn't the reason he lost. He lost because he's nowhere near good enough, simple as that.

Re: Joke fights here we come!!
Gassing is Conor's major weakness. Floyd walked him down and worked body and head.
He obviously gave Conor the first two and let McGregor burn out.
Conor did better Than I expected and was humble in defeat. His fanatics are annoying, but I really like him.
Also glad Floyd did try and fight, rather than coast to a decision.
Not worth the hype, but not a bad nights entertainment. Badou Jack looked quite impressive earlier and was definitely the fighter of the night.

Re: Joke fights here we come!!
it was pretty easy. Easiest fight he has had in a decade regardless of what anyone wanted or hoped to happen. all the mismatch talk before is what happened . McGregor looked really nervous before hand. probably used a lot of nervous energy.. but either way, mayweather would have timed a shot and knocked him out gassed or not. and that was the sloppiest mayweather has been. good spectacle though. and look forward to McGregor kicking ass in the octagon.. (he was never going to win this though)

AdamT....
Nice to see you dole out some credit, hopefully others who claimed Floyd would demolish him within 6 will do the same.
I think it's a disservice to say Floyd gave away the first 2 rounds because the fact is,Conors unusual movement and his MMA punching technique actually kept Floyd honest to start with....it's easy to say'oh Floyd could have stepped on gas and won first two if he wanted'...but had he tried too he could have easily been caught with that infamous left (lest we forget Conor caught him with a beauty of an uppercut).
Fact is the two sports hold similarities but are indeed worlds apart, though one day you will in my opinion see someone successfully cross over from one to the other...
Agreed with your statement that it was nice to see Floyd step on the gas, shame he often failed to do that in his biggest boxing fights.
Never liked the man, but Floyd the boxer is incredible and is by a long chalk deserving of being named up there with the greatest ever.
Badou Jack looked sharp and was very very good, although I was shocked at how easily Clev folded! Didn't seem up for it at all. Could see from Hearn's expression that he will not be offering the Welshman a new fight contract when the time comes.
As for little G...strange performance...I really hope he doesn't become like Broner in terms of his attitude and professionalism.

Not heard anyone say he lost because he gassed, he was being outclassed but wasn't looking in danger of being ko'd. He got knocked out at that precise moment because he gassed and couldn't even stand up properly for 2 rounds.
FLoyd was right that conor would use up all his energy in the first 4 rounds and would gas and be an easy target and that's what happened.
It was a decent fight and I am sure conor landed more on Floyd then most of his recent opponents. That upper cut was a beauty.

Re: Joke fights here we come!!
Floyd let Conor have the early rounds. Conor was at best awkward, I couldn't believe how poor his punch technique is, they really should've got someone in to help with that in camp. Although he's a good jab in fairness.
First judge gave first three rounds to McGregor, the rest to Floyd, with the last 10-8. Second & third judges gave Floyd all of rounds 2-10.
The stats show how Floyd stood off in the first three rounds, then stepped it up. Threw more punches in round 4 than in 1-3 combined.
Floyd threw SIX punches in the first round. McGregor 34. in the tenth round, Floyd LANDED 20 out of 26 power punches. Floyd guaranteed $100m which they reckon will end up at ~$200m when PPV added. The easiest money he's ever earned. Say he can't believe his luck.

Re: Joke fights here we come!!
I am one of the people that ordered the fight. The fight unravelled exactly how I thought it would with Floyd simply outclassing McGregor.
The first 3 rounds, Floyd sat back, defended like the master he is and let McGregor blow himself out.
Rounds 4 to 7 he picked McGregor off at will and continued to let him tire.
Rounds 8 to 10 started to bring the power shots out and simply blew McGregor away.
Never once did Floyd Mayweather look to be out of control or in any trouble. It was a mismatch from the start and Floyd approached in an incredibly professional way. As awkward as he is, McGregor did not really land anything of note (one upper cut aside) that would trouble any professional boxer. His punches looked rushed and lacking in force so I cant see him going for boxing again. If he does, he will need a hell of a lot more instruction on how to box.
Thought that Mayweather was also very cool when McGregor kept dropping punches to the back of his head, maybe not enough force in them to worry about, when he could of complained.
All in all, big pay day for the both so I am sure they do not give a damn what we all think.

He lost because he was a novice facing one of the best ever.
He gave it all and deserves much respect. I might of slagged him off for boxing, but I really like him as a mixed martial artist

He did his best and gets a bit of respect but realistically he would get hammered against the top boxers today. He benefitted from Mayweather's controlled approach, a more aggressive boxer would have put him away inside 2 rounds I feel.

Re: Joke fights here we come!!
Good calculated performance by Floyd, firstly figure out his style, let the fight and stamina unravel, go for the power punches. Very tactical and professional.
Think Conor came out well in the first 2-3, technically was never going to be able to compete with the worlds best but gave a display that would be more than creditable for a boxing debutante.

Easy fight for Mayweather. McGregor displayed no ring intelligence and (more surprisingly) little power.
As has been said, the easiest fight Mayweather has had in quite some time. And he gets a neat cheque and reaches a half century of victories.

Re: Joke fights here we come!!
I mean, Conor did win the first 3-5 (varied along the judges), so from that perspective he surprised. He definitely had serious speed. But he came in at 170-175lbs, had a huge physical advantage... and well, didn't do enough. Certainly did better than pretty much every fighter would do in his first fight, but then again, no other fighter in his debut had the benefits he had in terms of preparation.
If Conor sticks with boxing, which is where the money fights are I think (Cotto, Canelo, maybe even GGG), he needs to learn how to put some meat behind his punches because more than anything, the lack of penetrative power really let him down.

Hahahaha this is ridiculous. The man just lost the fight by tko not even 12 hours ago and there's already YouTube videos about it from the lunatic Connor fans.
Is that video suggesting that Connor is a better boxer than the like of mosley pacquaio and canelo just to name a few?
Hahahahaha mate get yourself off to bed, it's been a long day

McGregor is and always was a better boxer than the boxing fraternity give him credit. Took a lot of balls to take on the challenge. He did well enough to last as long as he did.

Re: Joke fights here we come!!
I'm not a rich guy but I put a lot of money on Mayweather last night. I'm not here to gloat as I didn't win, I backed Mayweather to win with £1000 at 3/10, then used the money I would have won to try and increase my winnings and lost £14. The point is that emotions and hype aside Mayweathers chin is better than McGregors punch, his only real hope. Then add in all the other stuff McGregor had against him and there was no way he was going to last and if he did the scorecards were never going to favour him. It was the best bet to place in a generation. Well done Conor but it was way too much to expect to beat Mayweather in your first pro fight.
