Mark Clattenburg on whether he deserved to be sent off:
‘No, his foot is raised to play the ball,’ Clattenburg said on Norwegian television station TV2.
‘His eyes are totally focused on the ball.
‘A free-kick and a yellow card for dangerous play.’
This suits my agenda so I'm going with this....

It's an obvious yellow card, not a red, under the laws of the game.
Excessive force = Red
Reckless = Yellow
This offence was clearly the latter.

Jesus.
You can stud someone in the head these days? Really under control. Dangerous, forceful, with no control. It's a red card

Basically my thoughts.
He might be intending to play the ball but he also knew by the time it came to try that he was going to be 2nd to it and he's likely to take out the keeper. That he's trying for the ball doesn't mitigate it being extremely dangerous.

Good to see the BBC showing the highlight of a City player raising his boot near the head of a Liverpool player (shortly after the save from Stones' shot).
The referee only gave a FK for that.
Flabbergasted as to why it wasn't a red!

Did the City player make contact and knock him out?

Irrelevant. We're led to believe Mane was sent off for 'endangering the safety of an opponent'; such an offence can be satisfied with a non-contact challenge (meaning an indirect FK, not direct). If the referee sent Mane off for that, he should have been consistent and sent the City player off earlier.
Unless, however, Mane was sent off for violent conduct - which would be an incorrect call as violent conduct requires a deliberate action (and I don't think anyone thinks Mane's action was deliberate).

It's not irrelevant, quite clearly if you don't make contact you've not endangered the safety of an opponent, not quite sure why this is being argued.

Re: The 6th Place Trophy - The 2017/18 Premier League Thread
On form De Bruyne in a Pep team is football porn.
Neither side really makes much of a concerted effort to defend. Otamendi was woeful, meanwhile as bad as Lovren might be, Klaven showed why he keeps him out the side.
Salah had Otamendi on a string only to revert to his best Aaron Lennon impression whenever he had a position to cause damage. What would probably annoy Klopp most is their reaction to going a man down, they basically bent over for City who went into showboat mode up 3-0 and 5-0 probably flattered Liverpool in the 2nd.

Of course you can!
If you go flying into a challenge, two-footed and off the floor, you've obviously endangered the safety of your opponent, even if you miss said opponent in the follow through.

Not the same thing as a high foot though.
Can't help but think if mane had done that to a defender we'd be hearing people after a season long ban. Logic seems to fly out the window when goalkeepers are involved.
Mane has studded an opponent in the head who was heading the ball away at the time. It is one of the simplest and clearest red cards you will ever see and if you think otherwise you are stupid.

PS Not a sending off for me. I would have said that might be more a generational opinion rather than the laws as they are now applied but interested to see that Clattenburg sides with an old git like me.

Ah the classic 'if you disagree with me then *insert insult here*'.
Not sure about logic flying out the window when keepers are involved - first time I've heard that.
If a red is being given to Mane for endangering an opponent's safety, fine: but a red card must also be shown for this.

I can't help but think the referee - and I loath to criticise referees for they have the most difficult job in football - has overreacted on the basis of the injury, in a similar vein to the fellow who sent off a Hull Fc player in the Super League game a couple of days ago.

Theres a clear difference in force there Duty. Mane goes full speed straight through Ederson, Jesus is trying to flick the bal.
For the record he got a free kick and I wouldn't have argued the toss either way if he got booked for the first one.

Force is irrelevant (not mentioned in the Laws of the game).
If you deem a raised boot to the head is endangering the safety of an opponent, fine; but you must be consistent in applying that.
Moss wasn't.

You obviously take into account that Mane was going full speed through the keeper when working out if he was endangering an opponent. That very easily could've ended up doing some serious damage, you'd be hard pressed to say the same about Jesus'.

That's pretty much what Ashley is banking on this time around. McClaren to Rafa, should be like chalk & cheese, and the reason why Ashley will be more confident in the way he's approached the market.

Re: The 6th Place Trophy - The 2017/18 Premier League Thread
Been on a media (and alcohol induced) blackout from saturday. My (completely biased opinion) was that it should have been a yellow. The reasoning for which has already been highlighted above. However clearly it is one which has split opinion.
Well and truly destroyed by city in the end. Could well have lost even with 11, with 10 we didn't stand a chance. Very disappointed by some of the performances, before and after the red. Klavan is terrible defender. Everybody and their dog knew this was going to happen when we failed to sign a centre back. Klavan as 3rd choice will play enough games this season to cost us dearly i would imagine.
Upside is we have the chance to restore a bit of pride on Wednesday night. Means the players cant stew on that result for an entire week.

Most important part of establishing stability is buy in from management.
Failed to back him in the summer and jumped horse when it started out tough. They risk becoming a Sunderland, declining annually and reliant on short term boosts from a new manager to survive.

Harsh on him. Why get the antithesis of Allardyce and be surprised when it doesn't take straight away? They were good yesterday too.
Plus I had Woy as their manager in the summer at 12/1 so this feels a pisstake!
Home to Southampton then City, United, Chelsea. How fun?

I'm pretty sure that some teams in the Prem think that they are better than they are, De Boer would have been a great long term choice - Obviously 4 games without winning is not good but they needed to stick with him and build..
