Australia in Bangladesh 2017
First topic message reminder :
The tour was originally to happen 3 years ago is finally here as Australia and Bangladesh the 2 test series tomorrow.
Bangladesh have been steadily improving in test cricket and can give any opposition a tough fight at home. They had a couple of notable wins last season, against England at home, and against Sri Lanka in their own backyard. Even a much weaker Bangladesh had given a much stronger Australia a serious challenge when the Australians came calling way back in 2006. With Bangladesh having become a much better side and Australia not at their best, this would hopefully be an interesting enough series.
Australia very much go in as favorits, but Bangladesh hopefully won't be pushed over.

They'd need to bat better than the first innings. Even eighty or so ahead would put a lot of pressure on them with Lyon seemingly the only bowler on either side who likes bowling on this.
Maxwell out now ? Yes...
If Bangladesh manage a lead of 150-200 they have a chance with Australia batting 4th on this pitch...of course they'll want more! Could do with Kayes coming to the party...

Re: Australia in Bangladesh 2017
Well nine down at the close and the lead is just 72... So (assuming the last pair don't delay things much in the morning ) a score of about 280 might do the trick for Bangladesh.
Can they get that ? Tamim gets going they would...
Hard to say how this pitch is going to play : looked easy yesterday and hardly a spitting demon yet...but Lyon did a lot of damage on day one. Shakib amazingly has just one wicket ...
I'd be guessing : think Australia still hold the advantage ; but one good partnership for Bangladesh could change that. Could be a good finish.

They're off for bad light with the lead at 72 and one wicket remaining. Australia in charge however they've let Bangladesh back in today and with only two days left, all three results still possible.

Why have bangladesh given a 50/50 pitch, you'd think they'd go full on turner again
Day 2 and 3 are batting pitches, end of day 1 it was a batting pitch, read end of today was starting to turn again, so reckon bangladesh won't cross 200

Will be gutted for Bangladesh if they collapse and lose this game...the lead's going up, its a decent lead for OZ and could be a match winning one...Warner having a terrific series

@wisden You can't drop half a dozen catches have anyone else to blame though
Australia would have not gone much beyond 300 had they fielded better

Batting Mominul at 8 has to be the stupidest move a team has pulled in ages

Weird. Was he off the field or anything ? I couldn't think why they would move him down the order ...still can't .
That Cummins wicket of Mushfiqur has surely settled this ? Hard to see how they can get this lead up over a hundred from here...120 might have been a real challenge for Australia but all those early wickets seem to have rendered that goal impossible.
Couldn't watch before lunch ...what was it ? Fantastic bowling , pitch monster , or just bad batting ?

From what I read on twitter the pitch is doing more, but the Bangladesh top order didn't cover themselves in glory...Kayes again failing. The move to promote Nasir ahead of Mominul seems to have no real explanation either...
Lead upto 76 now - these two are the last bats for Bangladesh (Mehedi is capable for a 20/30), if they can just manage to eek out a lead of 120-150 somehow, they'll give themselves an outside chance. Albeit a very slim one.

21 wickets in the two tests now for Lyon - imagine how many he'd have taken if he was good.....

Re: Australia in Bangladesh 2017
Top catch by Cummins to get rid of Mominul...the final straw ?
Lead is up to 80 now but just two tail end wickets left...not even the notoriously fragile Australia-in-Asia batting could blow it from here ...surely ...
The tricky bit might be if these two hang around a while and Australia feel pressed to finish it today (I hear the weather for tomorrow is supposed to be a bit horrendous)

If we're having a dig at post-war cricket expert Nathaniel, let's not overlook this little gem which was made during the First Test

He does have a record of making rather sweeping statements that tend to , shall we say , prove somewhat arguable
Mind you : Nasser Hussain and Michael Vaughan have been wiping a bit of egg off their faces since the Headingley Test so he's not totally alone...but he seems to be making a career of it...

Re: Australia in Bangladesh 2017
Meanwhile the Lyon continues to roar as Bangladesh lost their ninth with just an 84 run lead...
Not much point in poking at it : think they should be trying to play a few shots and somehow scramble a few more runs ...but I think they're a lost cause.
Not too much sympathy as I think they've played timid cricket for most of this match and got what timid cricket deserves...

All done . 86 to win.
The last two "partnerships" took up 73 balls for eight runs. What was the point ? One with your name on it is always coming sooner or later...
If Warner comes out smoking this is over tonight.

He did bowl very well. Still surprises me that he could wreck two innings like that on a pitch on which Shakib and Mehedi were fairly innocuous... Perhaps they'll be more dangerous this time ; though they haven't got any kind of lead so it is unlikely to make any difference.
Credit to Australia But Bangladesh may come to regard this as the series win that got away...

I fear they will look back on it as an opportunity that got away - although a series draw at home to Australia is still a good achievement for them! But ultimately they let themselves down batting first...300 was well under par on that pitch first up...

Re: Australia in Bangladesh 2017
Wasn't impressed with their efforts in the field : feel they sat back too much and allowed Australia easy runs. Bit of paralysis through anticipation of a series win...
Ah well ; as you say , Olly ; a draw is some achievement to follow the drawn series with England. They are improving.

Re: Australia in Bangladesh 2017
Australia can feel a little aggrieved with a 1-1 draw. Dhaka Test they should won after the platform Warner gave them in the run chase. Australia dominated in Chittagong. Maybe they should play matches as Fatullah in the future as Chittagong seems to favour the visiting sides with more pace in the pitches.

Well when they played in February Ashwin/Jadeja failed to get as many wickets combined in the match as Lyon got by himself in this game....

Probably because Indians fast bowlers bowled vastly better than Cummins and Cartwright...Good Golly I'm Olly wrote:Nathaniel Jacobs wrote:Imagine how many Ashwin or Jadeja would get against the Tigers...Good Golly I'm Olly wrote:21 wickets in the two tests now for Lyon - imagine how many he'd have taken if he was good.....

Re: Australia in Bangladesh 2017
What's someone who averages 50 odd (ok lost form after injury) doing at 8? Unless he was injured or something
Am also sure kayes averages like 45 in last two years opening or something like that I read in England series, he has been put to 3, Mustafizur gets movement both ways... One slip, Sabbir and maxwell seems like twins in test cricket, itching to have a wack
Bangladesh team think tank is not the best it has to be said, Walsh also has seemed to have declined the pace attack, I believe Ian pont said he will because he's a mentor rather than a coach... Why would bcb hire him with a young pace attack
Their fielding has to be second worst after Pakistan too, they dropped 6 in the match!! Cooks going for that in the series I imagine
Warner has found his feet in Asia, what a player
