Re: Ireland U20 2019
Strong squad this year but they looked very disjointed last year so as usual it's hard to know if they'll live up to the potential.

Will this be another tournament where the RTE coverage is blocked in Northern Ireland?

What is that about, I can understand if there is a rival channel with exclusive UK rights? Seems to be the case more and more, even Against the head is geo blocked.

Re: Ireland U20 2019
Look out for:
Scott Penny who has already played in the Leinster backrow in a few games (one MOTM) - no mean feat to squeeze his way in there. Big things expected.
Harry Byrne younger brother of Ross - this is his second year in the u20s so has experience and talent.
David McCann - don't know anything about him other than he's from Ulster so naturally must be the best looking guy in the squad!

Re: Ireland U20 2019
It's on rte alright. Maybe you can get it from using a VPN but be warned, commentary will be very biased!
I thought one of the sports channels would be showing I.
McCann is a good player. Big number 8 who is still U19. One for Ulster fans to watch!
Penney is very good and still be needed.
From a Munster perspective it's a good year. Casey, French, Wren, Hodnett are standouts imo.
Hawkshaw, Byrne, Tierney, Ryan, McKee,
The England team are supposed to be very good so it could be a long night. Hopefully the weather will be dry and calm.

Re: Ireland U20 2019
Quick pointer for Ulster fans
Allison, McCann and Moore are all outstanding prospects
However overall this is a poor year for Ulster
The U-19 and U-18 are both much better

Re: Ireland U20 2019
Cracking match. After last year's turgid displays it was good to see them pull out this performance.
Great win. I underestimated them and it looks like England did too. I was concentrating more on Ireland but Englands Hill and inside center (Hardwick?) stood out. The fullback also had good moments.

Re: Ireland U20 2019
Whay - hay! It wasn't blocked after all.
Ireland were in French mode gifting England tries and the aimless kick to Josh Hodge to allow him to score was very reminiscent of last year. Despite having some massive men on the pitch England never seemed to create very much so that was testament to the Ireland backrow and the defensive organisation. Hodnett looks a great prospect and we already know about Penny. The Ireland tight five looked... well tight. Tierney Martin got MOTM but they worked as a unit.
Harry Byrne sways from the sublime to the ridiculous (as he did last year) and could do with someone like ROG (who he is closer to in style than JS) to give him a boot up the rear at times. Casey was very impressive, and I liked the way he wasn't happy with his execution, and (foolishly) getting up after he was knocked into next week.
Hawkshaw and Turner showed glimpses but Flannery was the pick of the outside backs. Apparently he is normally an Outhalf at Shannon, and his inexperience showed at times in defence but he made up for that ball in hand.

Good win for the under 20s. I don't think any of their English counterparts would get into the Ireland under 20s side.

Good win for Ireland again - not bad for a bunch as unfancied as they are.
Casey again very good, if a tad excitable
Byrne continues to float between the sublime and ridiculous
Hawkshaw's turn to shine in the centre but Turner still solid
Murray the pick of the forwards for me with pace and a step for a big man
Penney again polished and Moloney brave.

Was too late in to get to see it...had to settle for the 'superb' Ospreys v Munster game instead. Oh what a night of 'scintillating' rugby that was......

Murray has been class and Charlie Ryan his partner. Ryan Baird is just back from injury and he is in the Leinster academy ahead of Ryan.
I think you're a bit harsh on Byrne. He's made s few mistakes but been quality otherwise. The 2 centers look very good. Sean French is a big talent yet can't make the team. He scored a hat trick for cork con at the weekend. Stuart Moore is supposed to be very good also but is out after a number of head knocks.
McNamara has some selection headaches.

It was a typical Munster performance. An attritional grind. Pat Kenny would provide more entertainment.

Just really can't get a chance to watch any of the U20 this year. Have Ireland a real chance her or are France their usual big monstrous - bridge too far - side?

It's hard to say sometimes with these U20s but from what I've seen I fancy Ireland to win. Ireland's set pieces are good, the attack is excellent with highly skilled players. The weakness in the side could be defence. Should because high scoring game.
Fridays match is up on YouTube. That's good because I like to keep tapping the side (when watching on a tablet) to skip forward stoppages or kicks in front of the posts etc.

Maybe I'm being harsh on Byrne, but it is because he obviously has the talent that it is frustrating when he goes to the dark side. He has missed a penalty for the line in every game so far and that shouldn't keep happening. Far too often he kicks straight to the opposition back three in space with little Irish cover - England scored from such a kick last year. Sometimes he tries to force a flat pass and has been picked off a couple of times. Having said all that this competition is to develop these players and maybe he is pushing his limits under pressure and will eventually learn!

Just the one forced change, Sean French for Hawkshaw. Hawkshaw out is a blow but French is a big talent and scored 5 tries in his last 2 matches for cork con. Let's see how he fits in.
This match will likely decide the winners of the championship. France will bring a big physical team again while Ireland will continue to play with pace. Hopefully the weather is good.

Won 31-29 and with that won the 6 nations after Scotland beat Wales. Great entertaining match!
Going for the grand slam next week in Wales. Will be tough but doable.

Re: Ireland U20 2019
Yep, a game that had everything. Two teams going at it. Was a little frustrated that Ireland were so intent on the route one with quite a bit of space out on the edges left under-utilised but that was a pretty good statement of intent to keep it physical with the big French side. Was hoping that if we clung on in there in the first that we'd get the better of the second and so it turned out with a side looking to be still quite fresh(ish) after France threw the kitchen sink at them.

That Casey at sh is something else. Going to be the next big thing. Based on how he is playing at the moment would take him to Japan. Might tell Johnny to stfu.

You never know but if Joe plays it smart and let's Casey ride on Dev's shoulders, chances are Casey might become Ireland's best second-row ..ever! It's official, Casey is first name on the plane to Japan.

Nah he won't do that, Johnny will be retired by the time he's breaking through with the seniors, but Murray will see him at Munster so can learn by watching.

Re: Ireland U20 2019
Well the Welsh made us work for that. I kept the faith that they'd do it in the end but Wales were quite slick in big areas and then three disallowed tries. You kinda feel fate is taking it away from them. Good that they hung in there and fought through an end game period that took dominance finally.

Ireland missed Craig Casey big time. He is the heartbeat of the team. Healy and Ireland looked much better with him at 9.
Brilliant result for McNamara, his stock is rising.

Healy had a mare and Foley didn't help. Replacing them with Flannery and Reilly changed the game.

Would agree Reilly made a big difference when he came on. Flannery I thought had his poorest outing of the championship at 15 (especially in defence), but it did help him moving to outhalf where he could use his distribution skills.

Re: Ireland U20 2019
Those who were in the 6N squad but missed out on the JWC and aren't shown as injured:
LHP - Giuseppe Coyne (Dublin University FC/Leinster)
Hooker - Billy Scannell (Young Munster RFC/Munster)
THP - Ryan Lomas (Galwegians RFC/Connacht)
THP - Luke Masters (Shannon RFC/Munster)
Lock - Paddy Kelly (Young Munster RFC/Munster)
Lock - JJ McKee (Ballymena RFC/Ulster)
OH - Bruce Houston (Ballymena RFC/Ulster)
Centre - Oli Morris (Saracens / IQ Rugby)
B3 - James McCarthy (UL Bohemian RFC/Munster) *
B3 - Aaron O'Sullivan (UCD RFC/Leinster/IQ Rugby)
New faces in for the JWC that haven't been selected before:
Hooker Declan Adamson (Clontarf/Leinster) *
THP Charlie Ward (Clontarf/Leinster) *
Lock Thomas Ahern (Shannon/Munster) *
Openside Ciaran Booth (Sale Sharks/IQ Rugby) *
Injured players:
Lock - Brian Deeny
Blindside - Martin Moloney
Openside - Scott Penny
OH - Harry Byrne
Centre - David Hawkshaw
Wing - Conor Phillips
Maybe some of the other players missing out on selection were also injured but these six were the one mentioned as missing. They all had important contributions in the 6N, but some are easier to replace than others.
Hawkshaw was the Captain and a clever player but French and Turner were also great in the 6N and maybe Moore will get his chance to live up to his hype with Kernohan a 4th choice cover
Byrne is the big loss, with neither Flannery nor Healy having that level of ability, but if Casey is at 9 they might be OK.
Penny will be missed for his experience but Booth comes with a fair rep and some GP experience too.
Swings and roundabouts.

Look out for Tomas Ahern, 6'8 second row. Might not play much this year as he's still U19 and has to add some weight but he is going to be a great player.
I'm looking forward to seeing how they get on. Defence is a worry but they're certainly capable of scoring against anyone. Don't know how good the other teams are.
