Player of the 6 Nations Empty Player of the 6 Nations

Post by LondonTiger Mon 18 Mar 2019, 4:17 pm

https://www.sixnationsrugby.com/2019/03/18/guinness-six-nations-player-of-the-championship-2019/

Wales captain Alun Wyn Jones led from the front on the way to his third Grand Slam and makes the shortlist where he is joined by a trio of Welsh backs who all played a key role throughout the Championship.

Josh Adams scored crucial tries against Italy, England and Scotland, and it was his break that started the comeback in Paris, while Liam Williams was assured throughout and finished as the Guinness Six Nations Man of the Match in the win over England.

Hadleigh Parkes is the final Wales player shortlisted. He made a telling contribution in the final win over Ireland with his early try and also put in a try-saving tackle on Jacob Stockdale a week after being named Guinness Six Nations Man of the Match in the win over Scotland.

Meanwhile for England, Jonny May is on the shortlist after finishing as the top try-scorer in the Championship with six tries in total including a first-half hat-trick against France at Twickenham.

Back-rower Tom Curry rounds out the list after a breakthrough campaign where he was excellent at the breakdown and also chipped in with tries against Wales and Scotland.

Williams and May have already won Guinness Six Nations Player of the Round in fan votes this season.

The six players will look to follow in the footsteps of Ireland’s Jacob Stockdale, who won in 2018, succeeding two-time winner Stuart Hogg of Scotland.

Brian O’Driscoll of Ireland holds the record for the most wins with three, having won it in 2006, 2007 and 2009.

The 2019 Guinness Six Nations Player of the Championship shortlist – selected by a panel of experts from the media – now goes to fans for their vote.

Supporters have until Wednesday at 12 noon to select their nominee for the Guinness Six Nations Player of the Championship.

Has to be a player that helped win the biggest prize and has to be the most influential player in that team....
Josh Adams most eye catching. But one player dragged them to the title and seemed involved in everything..... AWJ.

Alun Wyn Jones will win obviously, but what a tournament for Tom Curry. He made an enormous difference to that back row.

It's fake news for some but it has to be AWJ, no contest really. Unfortunately this decision will be left to public vote and all of England will vote for Tom Curry like they voted for Launchbury to get MOTM in that world cup game.

As I said on the other thread I feel that Curry has been excellent. The only foot he put wrong was the yellow and I'll gladly ignore that as it was wrong! Amazing to think that some were worrying about Underhill s absence.

It's a loaded question

Leader of the year would be AWJ but what's he done during the championship to effect the outcomes of games? He's not smashed someone to get a trunover for a winning try. He's not tackeld someone to prevent a game losing try.

AWJ has been the glue or the catalyst that Wales have built a team effort around to win the 6Ns. Someone like Hadleigh Parkes though has had massive impacts on matches (Scotland and Ireland) on an individual basis.

But as AWJ himself has said, it's not about him, its about the team!

As we're not represented with a player this year (which is fair enough) hat-tip to Jamie Ritchie who was excellent in the games he played. Considering he probably didn't expect to play as much before Watson's injury. Also Sam Johnson the bright spark in the otherwise dreadful Scotland backs division. Glad he looks like the international 12 we thought he'd be.

Went for Hadleigh Parks. AWJ is an obvious one but thought Parks really stood out. That tackle on last years winner Stockdale was phenomenal.

OK, you do not watch Wales as much as us Welsh, but because we always watch Wales, then we see the little differences he makes, he is first to every ruck, he is always in the middle of every maul, you would think our wingers would always be leading a kick chase, but you would be wrong, he is always there, he is everywhere.

Yes, we can all stand up and take notice of an epic try saving tackle, because they stand out, but AWJ is just a machine, and I do not say this in jest, but he could easily have MOM for every game he plays for Wales.

He is the same for Ospreys, I have seen this man be at the bottom of a ruck in his own 22, then get up and chase a kick from that ruck, and be the first man at the ruck in the oppositions 22.

He is always the first player standing there to stop a quick line out, he is always in the middle of the battle and communicating with everybody, including the officials, nobody sees the little non rewarding stuff he does, because people would rather see the flashing lights.

For AWJ will go down in history as one of the best players to ever represent Wales, and that is not something to be scoffed at when you think of players like Gareth Edwards, Phill Bennett, Bary John, JPR, John Dawes, to name a few.

Being a good leader is part of being a good player. All players have strengths, Jonny May is on the list because he is fast and scores tries, Curry because he is good at the breakdown. AWJs strength is his leadership and it was vital to Wales in my view so deserves the award IMO.

As a 2nd row player George Kruis played just as well as AWJ IMHO.

Curry was head and shoulders better than every player in the same position, Parks was a close 2nd for me.

Adams, Rithchie, maybe Hamish Watson are up there for me. Liam Williams quietly really good as well, as were Parkes and AWJ. Navidi could very easily have made the list.

AWJ was not the "best player" in his individual role but he is perhaps the one player who really made a difference with his leadership.  I still think there are better locks around - but IMO AWJ made the difference between getting a slam and not so for that he gets my vote

For me, Liam Williams was more the one who made the difference to Wales across the championship. AWJ did it in a couple of the latter games, but it was Liam Williams who was the one who started the come back against France. Liam Williams was the best player on the pitch v England. These were the two games where Wales needed the inspiration to come back and it was Williams that provided it, not AWJ.

AWJ for me, he was immense.

Giving his jacket to the kid in the rain as well, the presence of mind to do that whlle mentally preparing for the game.

Some player, some guy!

AWJ for me. He's a great player who I think suffers from his own high standards and being around for a long time, if he was new we'd all rave about him, but he's been around for ages so we just come to expect it of him.

Totally agree with this. He's become a victim of his own success and he's set the bar so high for himself.

Out of interest, with him approaching McCaw's cap record, has there been any talk of his retirement at all? I can't recall reading anything suggesting he's retiring after the WC, and he's certainly still playing like he's 10 years younger...

It would be nice to see another NH winner, but suspect it might make this place pretty unbearable for a while.

I'd be happy to see any Northern hemisphere winner. England, because it's the team I support, and anyone else, because it would be a new champion. For the same reason, I wouldn't mind too much if Fiji won but I stop short of wishing well on Argentina. If Argentina and France have good World Cups, that would mean England going home early.
