Re: ICC Cricket World Cup
Wow! I mean wow! I said the West Indies are quite likely to do well in this tournament. And in the battle of the mercurial, they just destroyed Pakistan. Since the game was at TB and since I had some important work in the evening, though I would catch up in the 2nd half. Checked cricinfo in between and found Pakistan 62-4, and then 83-9!
From what I later caught up and read about, the West Indies quicks kept bowling quick, and short. Pak batsmen had no answers. and that man Christopher Henry of Jamaica decided he could do with some extra rest time and finished it off even before I could come back home and catch up with the match!
Excellent start fro Jason Holder and his team. On full strength, West Indies can still produce such moments from time to time. But a godawful performance is never too far away. Can this lot keep it going for long enough? They are a bit light on spin bowling, else its a pretty rounded unit. There is batting depth and unquestioned power hitting abilities. Led by Oshane Thomas, they have some proper fast bowlers, even Dre Rus is willing his body to deliver some real sharp ones at 145 KPH!

By mentioning it again, it's become headline news and drawing attention to the issue. So it's going to have the opposite effect and basically has served as a reminder to boo them. Great work Mr Langer

I’m sure that’s the intention, similar to putting a derogatory newspaper article or comment from an opposing player up on the dressing room wall.

Yes, thinking about it, it seems that it could be an attempt to create a siege mentality, that they will want to carry forward into The Ashes

The tabloids can always be trusted to do their bit for England’s opponents.
I’m sure Warner especially can’t wait for the SA game after all the sh*t he put up with.

Nice green top at Cardiff for the Kiwis against Sri Lanka, a very tough batting surface.
Sri Lanka 12/1.

Sri Lanka's batsmen really struggling with the seam movement. New Zealand's bowlers keeping a broadly good, accurate line. 53/4.

60/6. NZ's seamers exploiting the conditions perfectly and Sri Lanka have no answer. Game over.

NZ-Lanka Game view so far
-116-8 are Lanka in half the overs..and haven't surprised.
I have a feeling Pak & Lanka will finish below BD & Afg.....where the latter two seem more organized, hungry and dosed more with Adrenalin to push & prove & show their skills on the biggest stage.
-NZ's chinks are visible....they have a great top 3 pacers....and then the quality of bowling drops significantly.
Neesham & Grandhomme....don't look like wanting to bowl more than 120-125kph and very mediocre
The shocker is Santner....whom I remember having seen in India a few years back as a classical SLA, who could bat too....another Vettori in the making
Now he has lost his action, doesn't pivot.....cannot flight...and I wonder lookin at his action if he is trying to perpetually bowl chinamen
whatever it is......he is rubbish....and NZ need to play Astle, Sodhi or whoever they have as their second spinner in the squad.
To me NZ looks on par with SA
-Eng looked Good with their 6 bowlers attack...and Ind's strength is their 5 man attack with Jadhav as a handy 6th bowler if he is fit by 8th June.
Looking forward to watching Aus in action soon

Yes, this is rubbish again. All the talk of 500 being made, let's start with 200, that would be nice. Even if SL vs Afghanistan is close, it has the feel of a wooden spoon match, so not exactly going to set pulses racing

New Zealand win by 10 wickets with over 200 balls remaining! I expected Sri Lanka to be terrible at this tournament, but that first game was a very low bar. Expecting the Afghans to knock them over on Tuesday.

Re: ICC Cricket World Cup
Trouble with ODIs...if one side gets knocked over cheaply the game rather dies on its feet. Suppose that is why the organizers love playing on roads. Not that I relish watching Sri Lanka trying to chase down 400 either...
Hopefully just luck of the draw that all these early games have been mismatches and we will see some contests as we get going. Otherwise it is going to be a long qualifying round - even though restricting the thing to the top ten teams was intended to eliminate the "minnows"

Afghanistan have the potential to become a very good side but they need to learn how to rotate the strike better. They are capable of smashing boundaries at will but so many dot balls. 80 out of 134 currently hammered in boundaries

Spirited effort by the Afghans to get over 200 at least. Not that I'd expect Australia to have too much trouble chasing it down ; but it represents a good recovery from 77/5.
And gives the public something to watch , Rashid a chance to have a decent bowl , and the Aussies to get some time in the middle...

Re: ICC Cricket World Cup
Half Time View
-Aus was decidedly superior and Afg lacking the technique to handle pace......& yet they fought with pluck & determination, mind over material flaws...to scrap & muster up 209.....more than what SA got vs Eng and 42 of those in 2 overs.
Hearty effort but they will surely lose.......only a matter of can they pluck some wickets & stretch Aus.
Afg have two wonderful spinners but even they need a 250+ to work with,
-On Aus composition....their 3 seamers are fast & good...and their 4 their allrounder 4th seamer Stonis seems to have improved....added half a yard of pace too.
I don't think Zampa though is a better pick than Lyon....far more inconsistent and is in only because perception is "Leggies are better wicket takers"

Credible effort from Afghanistan. They almost certainly don't have enough, but they haven't been humiliated. Wonder if Rashid Khan can get the Aussies worried?

Re: ICC Cricket World Cup
New Zealand utterly smashed a listless Sri Lanka, no real surprises there, Sri Lanka has been poor for a while across all departments. NZ has been a top ODI side for some time... On-sided game, but better than a side getting 400 and the other plodding along to 300 -7... At least it gets over early, and there is some spectacle when the ball flys around a bit.

Re: ICC Cricket World Cup
Afghanistan managed a decent total, but should be a walk for Australia as the openers have already given them a good platform. Could have been so much better and worse for Afghanistan. They have done well to recover from 5-2 and 77-5 to 205. But at 160-5 in about 30 overs with 2 set batsmen in the middle, they should have made at least 250. The skipper himself played a pretty poor and unnecessary shot to let things slip from that point, and Naip should reflect on that moment that may have ruined his sides's chances of a more competitive game.

Australia cruise home by seven wickets. Warner, ominously perhaps, finding his touch with an unbeaten 89.

I would personally rather 400 plays 300 than ever see anything like those Pakistan and SL performances. At least if one team racks up 400 you don't definitely know the result after one innings, also its good to have matches that actually last more than 50 overs in total

Bangladesh slogging freely against a rather inept South African opening pair. 58-0 off 8 overs, Souma in particular smashing everything.

South Africa looking awful. Incredibly sloppy in the field and largely ineffective bowling. Bangladesh playing solid. Good partnership developing between Shakib and Mushfiqur with plenty of strike rotation.
124/2 after 20. Bangladesh bat deep, down to 9, so they should be looking for something in excess of 300.

Only following now and again on cricinfo but Bangadesh seem very well placed on 160/2 after 25 overs. If they get to 20 overs remaining with 8 wickets still in hand, they should be looking at 330 minimum.
In line with Duty's posts, SA don't seem to have a full team. Certainly a bowler / all rounder short. I've never been keen on Morris since his ordinary showings for Surrey,

I would make Bangladesh favourites from here. They should make at least 330, probably 350+, which will be a very tough ask for a South African batting order missing Amla and with a long tail (Ngidi might also not be able to bat).
Looking like the four semi-finalists will be Eng/Ind/Aus/NZ.

Too early......look back at 1992 ....this format offers a BIG chance to regroup and fight backLooking like the four semi-finalists will be Eng/Ind/Aus/NZ.

Not calling the match yet...Bangladesh look on for a very good score but I'm not sure their bowlers will be able to dominate : could be quite an interesting high scoring contest.
SA have serious problems balancing their team : they just don't have a real all rounder.

In line with Duty's posts, SA don't seem to have a full team. Certainly a bowler / all rounder short. I've never been keen on Morris since his ordinary showings for Surrey,
And that was before Ngidi's confirmed injury! It must be extremely unlikely that he'll return to bowl in this game. Assuming he doesn't, it leaves Markram and Duminy (plus perhaps anyone else) having to bowl 6 overs between them to make up Ngidi's 10. That also assumes the other 4 frontline bowlers (which is being generous to some, looking at you Morris!) will each bowl 10.
This is a real chance for Bangladesh - they need to make it count.

That's an early call ! Those four have been my predicted semi finalists all along but there is a lot of cricket to be played yet. Sure to be a surprise result or two somewhere and rain may play a part.
West Indies could turn out to be the best of the outsiders ; though I'm not sure they'll have the consistency required.

Yes, I'm not wholly convinced by the Bangladesh bowlers, so I think it's vital their batters take them past 350, which should be an insurmountable total.
200/2, 18 overs left.

At 215/2 Bangladesh have a huge chance of pushing this past 350 - still sixteen overs left and some of those to be bowled by part timers...

Tahir breaks through...and sets off on a lap of the Oval...
Understatement to say SA needed that ! Shakib's was a fine innings but the new man will have to get set now.

Couple of wickets for Tahir, 242/4 now. Thoughts of 350 can probably be put away.
