Two comments i've seen so far are basically that he got a good ball and can be forgiven. I didn't see it though, so can't comment more than what Tufnell and Agnew said

Yep a classic openers dismissal - pitched on off, nibbled away and took the outside edge. Good bowling by Murtagh

A decade ago we started first test at Lords against Australia with an opening partnership of 196 between Strauss and Cook, Trott replaced Bopara at 3 later in the series. Oh what we would give for that top 3 nowadays.

Roy plays on a flat dead pitch at the Oval yet doesn’t average 40 in red ball cricket.
As for the WC final, Henry showed how clueless Roy was.
Now pipe down

Ah well ignoring Nathaniel's typically OTT dismissive sledge it seems most viewers not over impressed by Roy's fist Test innings...
On too late to see it myself ; but from the text commentary I gather he was lucky to survive twice and still fell for single figures . To a good ball , I understand. But hardly the start he'd have dreamed of.
Ill be honest : I was never in favour of the Roy as Test opener plan. I don't think his technique is up to it. However his form in the WC and obvious mental strength and confidence , coupled with the dearth of alternatives , had convinced me it was (is) worth giving him a try. The final against NZ in which he was all at sea against Boult and Henry showed what a risky proposition he will be ...and I think today underlined it.
What England are hoping , I presume , is that on a couple of occasions in the Ashes series he's going to manage to survive the first few overs and then rattle the opposing bowlers with a rapid 70 or so. With the bonus that his aggressive approach may soften up the attack much as Trescothick did in his prime. And that this will be worth a few early exits.
Probably shows the low expectations of top three candidates (now ticked again as Denly falls for a frisky twenty ... Stone dead lbw !)
Jury will stay out a while yet : but the Aussies will fancy having Root at the crease inside ten on this showing...

Burns gone now...
Don't think this will need four days leave alone five.
One thing for sure : this will be England's lowest Test score against Ireland whatever they get
Also their highest.

Christ, England's top order is shocking. Zilch defensive technique and no clue on how to build an innings. Ireland put the ball in a decent area, bit of wobble, and England have no clue.
Embarrassing. Got any fourth day tickets for the Ashes? Bin em.

Is anyone really surprised ? We know the top three are dodgy to say the least. And credit to Ireland they've bowled well.

Oh for goodness sake, that is the worst decision I've seen in my life.
Absolute amateur hour out there. Can test cricket survive when modern batsmen have no clue on the concept of building an innings?

7/4 still available on Australia winning the upcoming series. But they might be even worse than this England side.

Bairstow's just played the type of shot that should see him hit with a lifetime ban from first-class cricket.

IIRC back in 2016 when Bairstow scored the majority of his Test runs, he proclaimed he didn’t receive enough adulation. After playing a pathetic shot like that he should be punted in the groin.

This is the most embarrassing collapse in recent memory, exceeding even the 58 mustered against New Zealand and the 77 against the Windies.

If Stirling can slog a few Ireland could have a chance of a monumental upset.

Well it really should stop the nonsense idea frequently put up - even on here - that he ought to be pushed up the order. He's a good six/seven : No way is he a top order bat.
Unfortunately there don't seem to be any top order bats around today...
WC hangover ?

All jokes aside, it very well probably is. Too much white ball cricket for England must have affected them.
