Have England and Ireland learnt anything from this match that they didn't know beforehand? I think for England it seems that injury prone Stuart Broad is in reasonable form.

Not many injury prone players make it to 130 Tests.

Didn't think it was a substandard pitch to be honest. Not the pristine batting surface that we expect at Lord's, admittedly, but there was only a smidgen of uneven bounce and no other demons.

40 wickets in fewer than two full days play (total of 176 overs were bowled!) may indicate otherwise, but I put that down to bad batting mainly.

Jeez. I though we would get over 100 at least.
To be bowled out for 38 was poor.

Fair play to England.
Like i said we enjoyed it while it lasted.

Who reads the pitch and picks two spinners in England.  Luckily that one of them was the leading run scorer.

7.2 overs.

Is this going to happen in the Ashes? Every pitch we look at, yes we need two spinners.  Australia have only one spinner in their squad. Lyon and Ali are enough for the Ashes.

We will get more and more tests like this with the World Test Championship. A 1-0 win in a 3 test series is worth less than a 2-1 win in the same series. We'll see more results pitches (if we haven't already).

I doubt they planned to produce a pitch like that (though I think some dodgy batting made it look worse than it was anyway : Leach managed to stay in on it !)
Pitch preparation is a tricky business. At the mercy of weather changes to some extent and very easy to go too far in one direction or another.
Always a balance between making sure you can get five days -or at least four ! - for the ticket sales while giving a decent chance of a result. Think they have erred on the "flat " side in some past years and have recently swung back towards giving the bowlers more chance - which generally makes for more interesting cricket. Perhaps too many batsmen have become used to batting on feather beds ?

Purely from looking at the scorecard (I didn't see any of the play and haven't - yet? - caught up with the highlights), an incredible Test stacked full of twists and turns.

From the stats alone, I would say it was right that Leach was MotM and also right to drop him for the first Ashes Test.

Hey , eirebilly...I think Ireland missed your help on day three !

But - despite their rather disappointing last day fold up - I think they showed enough spirit in the field to suggest that they might be able to compete with the other "second tier" teams...especially if they can invite them to their own home grounds. Could do with a couple more solid batsmen ...
Might have been a short Test ; but it gave the spectators plenty of action while it was going thumbsup

It has been agreed that the first session was merely a bad dream. Root invited Ireland to bat first leading to an innings and 58 run win for the hosts. Run
