Premiership Rugby Cup
First topic message reminder :
Kicks off this weekend.
Games:
www.premiershiprugby.com/fixtures/premiershiprugbycup
Sale are taking it seriously;
Sale Sharks Starting XV: 15. Simon Hammersley, 14. Denny Solomona, 13. Sam James, 12. Rohan Janse Van Rensburg, 11. Chris Ashton, 10. Rob du Preez, 9. Gus Warr; 1. Ross Harrison, 2. Rob Webber, 3. Jake Cooper-Woolley, 4. Josh Beaumont (Captain), 5. James Phillips, 6. Jean-Luc du Preez, 7. Ben Curry, 8. Daniel du Preez.
Replacements:16. Akker van der Merwe, 17. Bevan Rodd, 18. Will-Griff John, 19. Bryn Evans, 20. Matt Postlethwaite, 21. Embrose Papier, 22. Luke James, 23. Byron McGuigan
Be interesting to see how each team approaches the new season. I think Tigers are likely to name a more development side for the first round.

Re: Premiership Rugby Cup
Welsh players in England off the top of my head:
Wainwright, Carre, L Williams, Francis, Tshuinza, O Williams, D Thomas, Rees-Zammit, Costelow, Holmes, Reffell, J Thomas, Beck, Lewis, Biggar, John, Baldwin, Priestland, Roberts, Faletau, Young, N Thomas, Prothero. Quite a hefty list and certainly a few we need to be keeping an eye on.
We also picked up lock forward Morgan Jones via the exiles programme. He wasn't re-signed with Leicester. He's now with Scarlets and has played for us at U18 and U20 level.

Will be interesting to see how carre gets on when the prem starts. He will surely get some chances to impress before vunipola returns.

There's a log jam of talent coming through at Tigers. The locks we've had come through at present are pretty good. George Martin looks likes he'll be wearing 4/D for the first team sooner rather than later. England under 18 captain and already made his senior debut. Can Jordan and George Mainz also look promising. Sam Lewis might settle more at 6 but is rapid and good in the lineout.
Reffell will get a lot of game time this summer and is one for the Welshies to watch out for. Not sure another openside is what the international side need. Thomas should get some game time in the centres as with international call ups we will need cover there. Costelow might see a little cup action this season but he's young so it might be another season before we see a lot of him. Not helping his cause is Hardwick who is a couple of years older turning up looking like he's spent pre season improving significantly. Holmes will be on the wing week in and week out.

Re: Premiership Rugby Cup
It's good that a lot of them are youngsters, most of them at Tigers and Saracens who have good records for bringing through young talent. I'm not saying Dragons are bad at it, but some players could benefit from being in your environment, they wouldn't benefit as much in ours right now. Rees-Zammit at Gloucester is one to watch so we're told.

Re: Premiership Rugby Cup
Nicky Thomas is a big lump, a dominant player at U20s level but wasn't fit enough for pro rugby. It'll be interesting to see if an English team can bring him forward, we're a nation crying out for more prop forwards. If he's really 119kg now then he's already slimmed down.

For what reason did Taqele Naiyaravoro not make the world cup?

Seems to be a change in how we want the backrow to lineup. Big unit at 6, fetcher at 7 and dynamic ball carrier at 8. Think we'll see Taufua lining up at 8 a fair bit this season. More mobility but not less physicality. Just less lumbering from last season. It's what most of us have been hoping for, for at least two if not three seasons now.
Helps that Reffell has been ripping it up in the PRC so far. Coghlan got a good write up as well but we've not seen that much of him. Thompson we know is quality and Liebenburg seems to be what we hoped we were getting when we signed Mike Williams but didn't.

Because he's rank average? Massive bloke with pace and can look very good in attack. Defensively he's shocking, particularly with positioning. Skill set is Championship level at best. When Fiji have people like Radrada, Tuisova and Goneva he's not going to get near the team.

Fair enough. I haven't seen much of him. Give his size and playing history I assumed he was up there with Tuisova, etc.

Less Tuisova more Lesley Vainakolo if you remember him. At club level he's a handy battering ram but he does tend to be good one week and then anonymous for the next two. If Saints can get him to up his fitness and work on his positioning and handling he could be a real monster.

If I remember right we could have played him or Sinbad. So they chose him...

5 caps he got. A solitary 6N campaign.
It was at the time of Alesana Tuilagi destroying people left right and centre often with Seru Rabeni in tandem. England wanted a bit of that and tried first Vanikolo and later Banahan with no success.
